Ways to Work
Heya! I’m putting together a broad list of things you can do on the platform to earn Robux, ranging short-term to long-term, and including many types of skills and interests. I see many aspiring creators on the platform that want to create, but simply don’t know what to create. This list will help put some concrete information on the table for you to help you be more informed on what there is to do on the platform.
If I’m missing anything, or if something needs correction, let me know in the replies! I would love for this post to be as informative as possible.
Each section on here will be given the following descriptions:
- How much dedication does it take?
(Long-term, short-term)
- How much immediate time does it take?
(Part-time, full-time)
- How well does it pay?
(Pays high, pays moderately, pays low)
- How much demand is there for it on Roblox?
(High demand, moderate demand, low demand)
- What is the current supply of workers for it on Roblox?
(High competition, moderate competition, low competition)
- Does this skill carry over to other platforms and engines?
(Universal, Exclusive)
- How much experience does this require beforehand?
(For beginners, for amateurs, for professionals)
If you need more help on what these mean, be sure to ask me! These are all measurements of the best potential outcome, NOT a guarantee.
Programming
Programming is a highly valued skill in the game development industry. Other positions in game development are essential, but without programming, they wouldn’t work. Simply put, a game can be run with simply code. A folder of art, models, and maps won’t do anything without some sort of programming.
This takes a long time to pick up and master, but in the long run is the most rewarding return. If you are looking for a long-term skill that will also sharpen your ability to think logically and mathematically, I recommend giving this a try. The hardest part of programming is the beginning, so keep pushing!
Lots of great beginner tutorials are on the DevHub: Learn Roblox Studio | Documentation - Roblox Creator Hub
3D Modeling
3D Modeling is a much more artistic and broad skillset that can apply to practically any engine, or really any field that uses 3D modeling (such as cartoons, showcases, graphics, scaled model, etc).
Realistically, modeling in Blender is the way to go. People are often scared away from Blender, which is why the supply of true modelers on the Roblox platform is very low. Blender has many, many buttons on screen and they all seem important, when in reality, you use very few of them. A quick overview of some hotkeys and important modeling tools, and you’re good to go!
Modelers can do contract work (a.k.a. “commissions”) to earn money per-model. There are many types of modeling, ranging from hard-surface (guns, armor, etc) to organic (living, fleshy, etc).
3D Animation
3D Animation is a fantastic skill that’s very easy to pick up. Again, this can apply to a large number of places just like 3D modeling.
Animation in Blender is most ideal. However, there are less things you need to know about Blender to start animating, which makes it a lot more easy to pick it up than modeling. At most, you need to know the basic hotkeys to move, rotate, etc, and how to put keyframes together into an animation.
Animators typically do contract work to earn money per-animation or per-animation-set. You can animate a variety of things, but the most common are characters and viewmodels.
Level Design / Level Art
Level design is the most abundant skill on the Roblox platform, simply because it’s very easy to pick up. You only need Roblox Studio to start making maps, so putting a bunch of blocks together is very quick and sells high. However, because it’s such an abundant skill, you will have a hard time standing out from others if you don’t sharpen your skills.
Map designers that stand out typically also have picked up basic 3D modeling to help create unique and optimized props, which helps maps feel more alive and coherent. Professional level designers know how to create industry standard maps with proper proportions, verticality, and more.
It’s very easy to enter the level design skillset, but it will take time to master.
Music / Sound Effects
Music and sound effects are both very low demand on Roblox at the moment, but those who ask for music or sounds typically pay very high rates. Music is a great skill to pick up, because if game development doesn’t turn out, then producing your own music on a streaming platform may. Sound effects are also a great skill that can be applied to many industries, especially movies and video games.
Unfortunately, it’ll cost a bit to have great tools for music creation. Getting a tool such as FL Studio or Ableton will give you an immense push, but will be costly.
Sound design isn’t as expensive, and can simply be done in a software such as Audacity very well.
If doing music, it’ll also be good to learn basic music theory.
User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX)
UI and UX go hand-in-hand and are very essential to a game. A decent game can be made a great one with phenomenal UI and UX.
UI is a low-supply job simply because it’s done best by those who have experience with art and programming, because those two skills help make the UI look good and work well. Basic programming is also needed to animate UI.
A UI artist doesn’t simply lay out frames and buttons, but they do it in a way that feels most comfortable to a user on the device AND makes it look beautiful.
Graphic Effects (GFX)
Graphic effects, unlike the common belief on Roblox, is not really just rendering Roblox character models. Typically, it’s creating logos and thumbnails for a game, or other art (such as what is needed for UI). A true graphic effects artist can effectively create unique logos and thumbnails for a game that help it stand out from others, and give it a unique branding.
This field is high competition, but you can easily beat it by not just doing basic renders with some colors and text.
Translator
Translators help open the game to entire nations, making them a powerful asset to an existing game. Translation requires no other game development skill!
This is considered “moderate competition” because many people consider themselves good translators because they simply speak another language.
To stand out as a translator, be certified as somebody who can translate to another language. Having a certification shows that not only can you speak and write both languages fluently, but you have a strong grip on how the language transforms between the structure barriers.
Professional Staffing / Administration
Staffing and administration is a broad category that includes:
- Management
- Financials
- Community relations
- Leadership
- Human resources
- Information Technology
- Marketing
And much more.
These are by far the most universal jobs on this list, and apply to EVERY INDUSTRY IN THE WORLD. However, you need to be well-versed in business, financial, or other practice relevant to what you are doing. Typically, you’ll need a degree to show this.
Only established studios will hire you, so you are guaranteed a relatively stable paycheck.
Clothing Artist
Some people skip out on development and decide to go the clothing route on Roblox. I do not recommend this, for a number of reasons:
- It pays very low
- 2D clothing will become less in demand over time as 3D clothing becomes higher in demand
- It is not a skill that applies anywhere else in the world
- It very easily leads you down shady paths on Roblox
- Your work is very easily stolen
- It costs you Robux to even upload, and because of the low pay, likely puts you in negative earnings
- There is extremely high competition on the platform
To be a successful clothing artist, you need to have a good taste in art, and put out clothes that people want but there is not enough of. Fill whatever shortage is possible, and you could find success.
Quality Assurance Tester (QA)
A quality assurance tester is somebody who plays a game and reports issues with it, but also recommends ways to combat those problems. Typically, a strong QA member will be somebody who has a background with computer science or general technology.
Those who look for “testers” that do not have pay should be IGNORED. As a QA tester, seek professional jobs that look for professional and structured feedback on their project.
That’s the list! If I’m missing something, or if I made a mistake, let me know! I would love to hear what you all think
Have a great day, thanks for the read ^v^
