We’ve Rebuilt Sponsored Games!

That’s literally the problem that several people here, including myself, have been mentioning. By assuming that mainly females will wear female clothing, then you are excluding all of the non-females that wear female clothing. By limiting the advertising to a specific gender group, you are enforcing the already problematic gender rules. That’s what we are trying to get across as it’s not only wrong but insulting.

We aren’t enforcing anything here though, if the player want’s to play the game he/she play’s it, there’s no restriction on a boy going to a female clothing store game on roblox.

Age is a different story as maturity is a key factor in it. Games that are more complicated tend to also be more mature. There’s nothing stopping a kid from playing that game but I highly doubt that a typical five year old will fully be able to grasp a game like a real time strategy game that’s multiplayer.

The change is that the ad will be marketed more towards a specific gender, which will cause people of other genders to not see it. Thus, it’ll be effectively halting a non-female from wearing female clothing unless they have to go out of their way to look for that kind of clothing.

I’m sorry, but this is not really a matter of ‘excluding’. It’s more likely that females will buy your clothing if it is more female-related. I already mentioned this in my previous reply, but when advertising something, you want to get revenue. Your target is one of the most important things, if not the most important thing when it comes to your game revenue.
Listen, if Roblox knew this was excluding, they wouldn’t have added it. Roblox is knows what they’re doing, I don’t know how this is a matter of exclusion.
If you want to play the game that’s being advertised, go ahead! Nobody is stopping you to do so! But when you advertise something, you can choose your gender target audience.
Also, this is an optional thing, this isn’t forced on anybody. Roblox isn’t excluding anybody and this can help developers drastically.

And just like maturity plays a big factor here since we’re grouping that a certain age group has a certain maturity, grouping a gender to common gender preferences also plays factor here.

Exactly, there’s nothing here stopping from a certain gender from playing a game.

How is it stopping someone from buying that clothing? This is not a matter of stopping anybody, it’s choosing your target audience. Females are more likely to buy female clothing than men are. If a man wants to wear female clothing, they can go right ahead and do so! How are you stopping anybody from buying their clothing? As far as I know, Roblox doesn’t even share what gender someone is.

If you market an ad to mainly be seen by females for more feminine-based clothing, then males and non-females won’t see their ads or at most, see only a small section of them. The result creates a problem where most of your customers are female and you’re not getting non-female customers as they’re not seeing the ad. It’s using problematic society rules that have been proven incorrect in order to attempt to make more money, which is unethical. What someone wears does not define them to a specific gender and assuming that a specific gender will wear a specific type of clothing is problematic on multiple different levels.

Honestly, I think this is a good update. If you’re making something like a football game, boys would probably be more attracted to it than girls. (Not saying girls can’t play football, they obviously can! The sport is just male-dominated, nothing against girls who play football!)

I think this is a good idea, mainly for users who are making games directed to a certain gender that’d most likely play the game. I don’t really see why people would label this as a bad update.

As I said, nobody is stopping anybody from buying their products. If you target a certain gender to buy your products, and your products are more likely to be bought as the opposite gender is less likely to buy it. I don’t know how this is a matter of excluding someone, if you want to buy the product, then buy the product.
Almost everyone using this feature is not going to use it for malicious intent (being sexist) and I don’t know why this is such a big issue. You are free to buy any item on the Roblox platform, just because you select one gender over another does not make it excluding to anybody.

I think the argument is not that. What OP is trying to state is if a person does not see a choice, how will she/he even know about it, leading to one group primarily using that choice.

There are several companies that use this tactic and this feature is entire optional. Nobody is forcing you to use this feature and you can check off both if you’d like.

This is a valid point. It’s just that the concept of competition in the capitalistic market forces companies to balance the ads’ Reach and Frequency since advertising is bound to a limited resource (money). This will not change unless capitalism is abolished as it is now or regulated by restricting targeted ads on a legislative level.

@mircostaff
Because of this statistic, men are more likely to play this game, which means the developer has more of a chance of getting a larger fanbase! Because of this, the developer can choose who the target demographic is to get more players for his game.

You do not know this, nor should the validity of this decide whether developers can advertise to their target audience.

It’s a blessing from on high that we are now able to sponsor longer than a single day. Will we get to know the stats on ad viewership during certain time periods, varying from minutes to days? Perhaps we could see what times of day our ads are viewed the most.

This is my main issue with age targeting. You will not get a reliable data set for any age because kids often choose to register their account as 13+ or 18+. A better targeting method would involve Roblox using the types of games a user has played before to decide what types of games should be displayed to them in the future. I imagine this is already implemented behind the scenes to a degree.

This argument is not relevant here. Roblox has been using gender and age based segmentation for its marketing for years. In this case, nobody is being force-fed information - you can turn it off or use other sorts to discover games. This is not the right place to discuss the “problematic” nature of a trend which is used to promote and design almost every product and service out there.

Will Rectangle ads finally return to places people will actually look? Almost no one scrolls all the way down on the profile page (which is the only location you’ll find rectangle ads in), and making them actually usable would allow people to use their unusual dimensions to their advantage.

Regardless, as a game dev, this will definitely be something to note after I got a budget by making a shoddy cashgrab to get a budget; with just a few hundred robux and careful trend + tag exploitation.

you can still choose gender in settings. It’s just not required on sign-up anymore.
