What are some good lighting tips?

I’d like to know some lighting tips for lighting a big building. I attempted it, but some spots are very bright and some spots are dark, and I don’t know how to fix that. I’ve been using surface lights in the ceiling at around brightness levels 1-1.5. The building is 2 floors, so maybe it’s the light range? Here is the picture of one part of the map I’m concerned with.

Personally I try to keep the brightness kind of low and edit the range mostly to avoid this:

I was told to use invisible parts with lights but I’m not really sure about that as it’ll look like lighting is coming from absolutely nowhere.
