I know this is a bit broad of a question, but I want to know what is good for a game to have design wise in terms of playability and enjoyability.
I think players mainly want something to do, to pass the hours or minutes.
When it comes to a games essentials, you’re going to want:
- Good Programmed Items
- Decent Builds
- Objectives
- And A Good Game Idea
Of course, things I listed could vary on the type of the game, a lot of times in non-popular games is the lack of a decent game idea, programming, and builds.
Refer to something like MM2; It has a good game idea, and a objective for every player. It has good builds, and programming.
Playability;
You’re going to want a game that doesn’t lag, something nice. The enjoyability is something you want to focus on. If you don’t like the game idea, or the game concept, don’t use it. Use something else. For instance, in the past my community was suggesting all these game idea’s, and I took one of those game idea’s, knowing I didn’t like the idea in general! Well, that game failed…
I suggest making a game you enjoy playing, thus the players that play it will get a kick out of it too!
Hope this helps.
You want to make a game? start by the very roots.
- What type of game will it be (the link would help you know)
Once you’ve decided the game you want to make, you wouldn’t be ready, yet, to make a game, make scripts, make designs, make buildings, NO, not yet. In between other questions there are some like:
- What is the type of game I’m going to make? is it a mixture of some?
- Is there a story on it? is it pure gameplay?
- Can it be frustrating to play? a frustrating game forces rejection on players. You can know if its frustrating if there’s a constant loss, an inbalance between players that can feel unfair, even if it’s rightfully fair. For the pro players it wont be a problem, for the newer players it will feel like a pain to play, which will make them reject it, and never play again.
- What’s the overall aesthetic of it? is it minimalistic? is it classic? is it realistic? is it cartoony? (roblox helps with this one) is it dark? is it joyful? what defines it?
- What do I have to do to achieve this game? you need to have awareness about the overall game development. Sometimes, if you feel you can’t do something good, you can ask someone else for help. Can’t make music? someone else can, or just look at the roblox library of music. Can’t script? there’s many people willing to help (just look at the right place). Can’t design? get your ideas, ask for someone who specializes in drawing or designing with photoshop, share them your ideas and try to be as detailed as possible, unless that they want short mails. Can’t build? yo, many people know about building, both in roblox studio and in other apps like blender. Can’t make stories? well, you probably won’t find someone who can help you with that here, on the devforum, perhaps a literature teacher (not the ones you find in school who get paid by having youngsters read oedipus, someone who is a lover of stories, that are at some other places) can help you, perhaps I can (I like making stories… =/ )
now, it’s very easy to just say “just make a good game” and move on, but it’s harder than some words, many other things must be considered, not just “good games are succesfull”
I’d also like to point out the importance of socialization in a game. Roblox is a very social platform; many of the most played games require interaction with other players. And I agree with what Disparrel said, players just want something to pass time. Because of this, simple and minimal games often do very well.
From another similar topic questioning how minimal games achieve popularity, chesse20 gave this response:
TLDR I think it’s important to include social interaction in your game
