What are you using to record your trailers?

–edit video upload failed here’s a YouTube link instead.

Hello everyone. I have been playing around with Adobe Premiere and have discovered I am terrible at it. However, that is not why I’m asking for your help today. What are you using to capture your recordings to upload into video editing software? I am using Flashback Express from searching for free software and recommended tech sites. I have maxed the recording settings out for the best possible outcome. By the time I upload everything into Adobe and export it into a video format, I get these very grainy videos. What I am trying to capture in my trailer is simple visuals that make the viewer want to explore the unknown. Any advice will be appreciated.

I have Fraps by beepa Ltd. but wouldn’t recommend it because of the $35 price tag, inability to record anything outside of a dedicated application, and massive file sizes when uncompressed.

OBS, on the other hand, is free and allows for a lot more control over the recording (audio input devices, individual mixer sliders for each of those inputs, and the ability to record your screen continuously even when switching between applications). I would definitely recommend it since it’s easy to use and also has the option to record lossless video like Fraps if you’re looking to get the highest quality out of your recording. There are plenty of online resources available on how to set up the program for your specific needs.

There’s also a problem in your example video called “pillarboxing” where the aspect ratio of the clip doesn’t match your project settings and causes the video to shrink and be surrounded by black bars on both the top and bottom. There are lots of tutorials on how to avoid this in Premiere, but once you have files recorded with OBS there shouldn’t be any need to make corrections since the files OBS generates can be cleanly imported into the software without issue.

Awesome, I’m downloading OBS now. The switching between applications and still being able to record sounds pretty legit too. I believe the pillarboxing happened to me, maybe. At least there was a random bar going across the bottom of the video. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, Ghost. Cheers.

I use Geforce Experience (Nvidia Shadowplay). I think it only works on Nvidia graphics cards, but it records your screen without dropping performance much and it gives a result that’s what you would expect.
