What I learned from modeling on Blender

I’ve been modeling (a map) on Blender as an inexperienced and I have to say… I learned quite lots. I’m going to provide you some realizations I learned on the way.

Linked Duplicates

The shortcut is Alt-D. Instead of using Shift-D, Alt-D allows you to duplicate the object while making them universally changeable. This means you could change one object (by mesh transformation or what), and it’ll affect the siblings. If you’re reading this while working on a Blender project and realizing this could’ve save you along the way, then do not worry! Select the object you want to change, shift select the source you want to derive from, and choose “Link Object Data.”

Utilize Cursors

Blender’s transform system is weird and uncomfortable to use, or at least that’s what I think. Unlike Roblox Studio, it doesn’t use the six point transformation system. The anchor is always in the center and not catered for further use case. I haven’t found a good Gizmo add-on that compensates this. However, I used 3D cursor which helps a lot. I do this by selecting a vertex, edge, or face, and then do Shift-S and go for “cursor to selected.” You can do any transformations to your liking after that.

Copy Attributes

Do you find copying transformation properties by XYZ too tedious? You can look into the built-in addon, Copy Attributes. Once you enable it, every time you press Ctrl-C having two selected objects, it’ll pop up a menu. I find it useful when I’d need to copy a location of the object on to another, but don’t want the tedious process.

Those are some things… might share more.
