I know many games that have great mechanics but unfortunately lack content. But what even is content? I’ve received many conflicting answers when I ask other developers (and players!) this.
content is mechanics, graphics, weapons, maps, anything that is in the game is content.
also when you say,
what do you mean by that? more mechanics = more content, more detail in the mechanics = more content, etc.
Content is the result of using those mechanics. Use those mechanics creatively, and you’ll get enjoyable content.
In a platformer, for example, mechanics would be the player’s moveset- running, jumping, double jumping, diving, and the content would be levels for the player to use those mechanics in.
Without content, a platformer would be a tech demo more than anything.
This is a fun question. Like you said, there are a number of ways to answer this. I think a useful, albeit not entirely accurate, definition would be to define content as the feeling of experiencing something new. The more time players have this feeling in your game, the more content it effectively has.
Content is basically mechanics and how you play the game in general, and also how you see it as (such as good/bad content), similar to genre.
Content is just anything you put in a game. For example, vehicles, skins, weapons, abilities, locations, activities and all that.
