Most of the people might think “free models aren’t necessary”. But I think they’re.
Any Dev doesn’t learn first. When I was new, I didn’t know anything about scripting. I used random free models, checked the script and learnt scripting by myself. I would never learn scripting or UI designing if they didn’t exists. Free models inspired me to script myself and make models too.
I used to use free models when I was new, now I have learnt a lot and I never use free model. And sometimes, I make free models too.
Once you learn things, you can make your own game without any free model! This will also make you feel professional. You can also make free models to help the new developers.
Making scripted models or tools is near impossible for new players unless they’re some sort of genius. They also probably won’t have funds to hire other people, though even if they did, it’s sort of wasteful, since it is their first project after all.
I’d hope that after a while they’d start creating their own things to make their game more unique and build up on their skills.
I feel that people would learn how to be self sufficient and realize “Hey, I need to actually work for this!”, think of a newly grown work ethic. I feel that they should be a thing, but only for people who are brand new to building, it should give them limits on what they can do.
Games are easy to make without freemodels, I guess it’s just something that’s evolved in time with me. I do usually have custom models, but sometimes that just doesn’t work so I just make it on my own.
My thoughts on free models are pretty mixed. They’re amazing references if the model is good, although you shouldn’t use them, because they might have virus scripts. This is why I try avoiding them as much as possible.
I normally only use free models as an example or for my GFXs. Free models are super dangerous even if they’re approved by roblox. Most of the time free models are overrided with virus, or has virus scripts in them. Even though I use them in GFXs, I’d definitely not recommend to put them into your games.
As someone in the comments already said, they can be used to learn on how to build and much more, when I first started off building I usually would take a model out of the toolbox and try to recreate it but add my own stuff here and there. So in my opinion free models are a great way to learn and start creating your own ideas.
The reason behind this is due to backdoors and viruses that could be placed in the model. Your game will also be seen on negatively as you didn’t really put ‘effort’ into the build - making them think it’s a quick cash grab. You should just make your own models, it’s not difficult you just need some practice and a reference to work off from.
I do not use free models and all they really seem to do is put viruses into your game. They are ok for referencing, but looking at images and asking people here on the forum I think is much more useful. They might give some inspiration to new builders, but I don’t think that they are very useful.
While this IS true, viruses and backdoors are easy to remove, unless it’s a plugin. Just search “script” in the explorer and if the script has a weird name or you just feel like it could be a virus, check the script. Also, search for fire. What some viruses do is insert fire into your game and put the spread at 99999 to lag your game.
I strongly believe that free models are a great way to learn as you can study the scripts and build and learn all about the different parts and how to use them. They are very useful in my opinion as long as you don’t depend on them when you’re creating your game and instead only learn from it. If you’re scared of viruses, you can use this plugin called ro defender which scans the game for any viruses so you won’t get hacked or your game won’t get destroyed.
Hope this helps!
I don’t use free models, but they can come in handy. Say someone was trying to learn lua, they can insert a model, and study how the script works. Removing this would eliminate that opportunity.
Almost every popular game doesn’t use free models, that would be taking someone else’s work sort of. Some have viruses in them as well and could infect your game and you wouldn’t know it until It’s too late, people would just have to learn how to build and make games without using the toolbox for free models.
I don’t use free models either. Still not everyone can create models and script. So it’s actually important. But free model creators use this advantage and put virus on it which is a great problem.
I would have probably never started developing.
Just placing down free models and “making,” games to play with my friends was what got me into development.
When I started developing I only searched freemodels, test them, publish the game and make a thumbnail and icon or just typing in google, select an image and upload it; my games got from 1 to 3 visits a day. Just by using free models I got 1k visits in my profile so I was inspired to continue growing and becoming a real developer, I started building in Roblox Studio, learning lua and watching tons of tutorials about roblox, after 6 months of fails I finally made my first “Cool creation”, it was medium quality, but it was awesome, again get inspired and keep practicing. Today I can easily build a map, accesories and model tools, Im not the best, but I think im very good in what I do and I love doing it!
If free models don’t exist, I don’t think I will be a builder.
I think free models help us feel proud for our self.
So yea I think It’s really important to Roblox.
But I still think you should use your own models
because it is somebody else’s work.
I rarely use free models, and if I do it’s just to look at example code of something that I want to make in my game, I wouldn’t really notice the difference if there were no more free models. Free audio though, that’s a different story.
Free models are awesome when you’re starting out. Personally, I see them more or less as training wheels for while you’re still learning how studio works, or even map building for that matter.
“Free” models are the core of Roblox Studio. New people engaging in development, well, they have to start somewhere. Looking through the Explorer, finding out how things are put together, how certain scripts work, part hierarchy. Free models are inspiration to many players who are just beginning their career as a developer.
For example, when I began working on Studio, I used some of the pre-built maps that Roblox has. Working from there, looking through models, I managed to begin creating games, granted, with toolbox models, but that’s where it begins with inspiration. Take other models as help, build on those models, expand, add-to them, and soon you would be making your own models.
