Whats the best technique for animating tank treads?

is it one mesh with tons of bones migrating to the next point
is it tons of track meshes with a few bones
what are they using here

You want to animate the tank with scripts??

i want to know what they use to animate track band around the wheels, to deform and move with them
its just a decoration and not actually interacting with the ground

It is interacting with the ground, If you watch the treads move with the suspension, It is possible to do that with rigs but it would be laggy or glitchy. Those genuinely use physics to animate (maybe with tricks like thrust to prevent jams) You can see it much more clearly in the second video while the tank is on the concrete.

a way to simulate tank treads would be using constrains as show here:

but its definetly very laggy when you have too many of them and its better to realistically using scripts and math

guys the tank games with animated treads are just using mesh deformation its nowhere near actual parts pushing the ground besides maybe the wheels dont do that

tbh it could just be using gears and springs for tensioners like a dozer it looks like the cylinders on the track are made to slip into the gears

hmm yall use wheel and track, any of you know how make part soft, dynamic (bone)
but only the direction that face ground will be soft?

4 years later, did not expect to find my goofy old video in the devforum. Unfortunately I’m also looking for alternatives instead of using physics tracks. In my experience they are tedious and unfortunately they don’t work well with suspension. Until Roblox adds more properties to hinges it’s going to be a slightly buggy option. It does look great though.
