When will we be able to sell models for USD?

This documentation page has been saying this message for over a year now.

I’d like if we could get an update soon, I’m hoping to hear something about this at RDC because this is so cool.

3D Artists and VFX Artists and such will be able to find a new market to monetize on, and making games will become easier for developers who can’t find 3D Artists and such. For example, if you’re looking for some cool weapons to add to your game like swords, guns etc. Or environmental assets like bushes, trees, flowers. I’m personally setting up my future asset packs I’ll be selling so I can just upload them once this feature is available.

If any staff see this, I’d like to give some suggestions on how to make this feature as great as possible.

  • Icons and Thumbnails. I’d like to show a preview of the assets I’m selling and also for ease of access.

  • Anti-theft protections. There are plugins such as BTRoblox that allow users to download meshes and models even if they are off-sale. Vendors should also be notified if one of their assets/meshes is being used in a game alongside with the username of the person who loaded the asset inside Studio, to differentiate between legitimate owners and thieves. However I’d like if Roblox could do this automatically, if you do not own the asset you won’t be able to import it.

  • Limited stock. No, not limiteds like the ones you equip. I mean sellers should be able to set stock for their assets, for example not every game developer will want to use assets everyone else is using in their games. Therefore as a seller I’d publish an asset pack that has a stock of 1, this also makes commissions safer & easier for everyone.

  • Separate category for paid & free assets. What I mean by this is separating the toolbox which is plagued by low-effort/stolen/DMCA/free assets and making a section similar to Unity’s Asset Store or something like Fab (previously known as Unreal Engine Asset Store).

  • Sub-categories. Let developers look for what they want specifically, there could be tabs such as “3D, 2D, VFX, Plugins, Scripts, SFX” and such.

  • Armature exporting. I will be also selling assets such as rigged character models for developers who want to create fantasy games that have ogres, animals, dragons etc however I won’t be providing animations because some developers might want to create their own animations, or if I do provide animations, some developers would still want to create additional animations. So I suggest there being a way to download the rig itself, allowing developers to animate the assets themselves.

Can’t you already do this in most fairly popular discord dev servers?

I wish We had been Able to Sell Models and Plugins for Both Methods, like:

  1. Sold for Robux (the Platform’s Currency, that can Also be Bought for Real Money)
  2. Sold for Real Money (such as: US Dollars, Euro, Pound Sterling, Japanese Yen…)

Yeah like there is nothing preventing people from doing this, I’m in many servers where people do just this

This is true, I’m in those servers as well however this would create a new market directly on Roblox so you don’t have to go through third party options to sell your work or purchase assets etc.

Also, it being directly on Roblox makes me more incentivized to sell or purchase assets because I think as a collective we should trust using a official on-platform market for these things rather than peer to peer transactions where you could run into bad actors and scammers where if you sell something for USD they could chargeback you (whether through a payment processor like PayPal or literally just contacting their bank to refund the transaction)

I’ll be using both because I do prefer Robux as payment because it’s safer. And they’ve already changed Plugins from Robux to USD so I don’t see them allowing you to publish an asset for sale with Robux, but it’s still good that we’re getting the Roblox equivalent of an asset store.

And it’ll be very useful browsing through stuff with image previews rather than having to scroll for hours in a Discord channel where new ads are constantly being posted just to potentially find something you’re looking for, or from the seller’s POV having your ad for your services be buried by tons of new ads by other people selling their stuff.
