Why a development portfolio is critical

Scenario one: You’re browsing the Talent Hub, and you excitedly apply for a job listing. They ask for work examples. You respond with some random screenshots of various unfinished projects you’ve been working on. Your application is subsequently rejected.

Scenario two: You get a response back, asking to see your past work. You send your development portfolio with some of your best work and the next day, you’re hired.

Which scenario would you choose? The one where you’re hired, obviously.

A portfolio is important not just for getting hired, though. It’s a showcase of your best work, the accomplishments and projects you’re most proud of. It’s where other people see who you are and what you’ve done as a Roblox developer.

And by portfolio, I don’t mean a Google Doc with some screenshots of your Studio models. I mean, that might cut it, but in the long run, you want a portfolio you can be proud of. One that looks professional and gets you hired. And there’s a fine line between elegance and clutter.

The following is a link to my personal development portfolio. When you look over it, you immediately notice some key aspects of the overall design, such as:

  • All social media links are listed
  • Easy to find and view work
  • Only the best work is shown
  • Invites viewers to learn more about work
  • Shows contact options

When you’re designing your portfolio, you want to make it as easy as possible for a potential employer to contact you. That’s why it’s important to be active on social media, and link your socials in your portfolio.

Another key aspect is to only show your best work. Don’t show some random work from 2 years ago. Keep your portfolio up-to-date, and curate the content you showcase.

Finally, make sure that you link your portfolio everywhere. For example, on your socials, on your devforum page, on your Roblox profile, on your Discord, etc. Make it easy for people to find your work.

If you’re looking for a free and easy-to-use custom portfolio creation site, I suggest checking out https://carrd.co. It’s an elegant website that allows creation of multiple websites. If you’d rather opt for a different portfolio format, you could create a post on the DevForum, the Talent Hub, or make your own site.
