Why do people make free models?

I’ve always wondered, what are the benefits to creating free models. This is more of just a general question of why do people make them and should I make some?

What would be the point of creating free models?

I would imagine for others to use

To help people that don’t know how to make models themselves. Some people don’t have the talent that others hold.

I usually use them as tutorial examples to explain how I do things with my forum posts.

I’m actually trying to help people with decent models instead of just making multiple copies of someone else’s model and posting it as my own like other people do.

The other alternative is that someone is proud of their model but won’t be using it much so they actually share it with the world!

Some make free models to spread viruses and backdoors, others make them to help other people.

Free-to-use models look really good on your portfolio if you are applying basically anywhere. It shows you care about accessibility, and any recruiter can go grab your model and look at it in-depth if they are considering hiring you.

The culture is stronger around free-open-source-software but the same sentiments apply for 3D art, too!
