Why does blender seem so complicated and downright terrifying to use?

Hi I’m Mark,

I’ve recently been attempting to model in blender but I just find it so complicated. There’s no simple hotkeys like ROBLOX’s that are easier to remember, and everything just seems scary.

I’m not really here to hate on blender just to ask how many other blender modelers got the hang of it. Like with ROBLOX it’s very easy to get the hang of it, the controls and outline are simpler.

I just feel like blender crams stuff together which makes it hard for someone who just wants to make a easy build. Like there’s so many things such as animating sections that confuse me, and I find it scary mostly because there’s a bunch of stuff that I won’t be needing to use but I feel like I would be needing to use it, so I’m afraid to try to learn it all. One wrong key and I might just jack up the whole menu or cause an unintentional change. Sure I’ve seen many people say it’s quite easy to learn, but is it really?
If anyone could give me some tips to blender I’d appreciate it, as I’ve tried watching tutorials and many other guides but it’s complicated and frustrating for me to learn.

Should I just stick to building in ROBLOX, although it’s harder to model things and get a more unique design, or keep trying to learn blender?

Tips would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Mark

Personally, I use little to no hotkeys. Also, if you are looking for a full, easy tutorial on how to do low poly modelling for beginnners, here ya go.

Blender 2.8+ is much more intuitive than earlier versions, so ensure you’re starting with the newer software as you’re starting out

It’s helpful to know that Blender just relatively recently did a huge usability overhaul of its UI and tools for version 2.8, so much so that its very different from 2.79 or older. So when searching for tutorials, always follow the search criteria with the version you’re running.

Also, like anything, Blender takes practice. Follow along some more basic tutorials like The Blender Guru and others, and slowly get more comfortable with the software. I’ve used Blender for four years now and I’m still learning, so it’s ok if you’re not a master within a month :sunglasses:

The interface of blender does look extremely vast and overwhelming on first sight, and that is because it is. The reason that it appears to complex, is because there is so much cramped into the application. I myself have have a plethora more to learn, even after multiple years of using blender. The modelling component, is only a small chunk of blender’s purpose.

Make sure not to get ahead of yourself either, and watch the beginners tutorials. Like many things, learning blender builds on itself, so you have to know the core of the program before any mediocre tutorials make sense. I recommend Blender Guru’s beginner tutorials, as @Aotrou mentioned. They start from square one, and are very comprehensible.

Also, Keep in mind that you don’t need to know all of the hotkeys to start. You can find all of the functions you need from the menus.

When people say that blender isn’t complicated, they mean that once you learn the basic mechanics, it’s easy to use. It does take some time to learn, but I guarantee it is worth it in the long run. Just the modelling component of blender allows you to do so much more than roblox’s part based building system.

Remember, it’s a slow process, but if you keep at it you will eventually be as good as any blender professional out there.

I have been there man. When I first used blender 2.8, I was terrified. I scrambled to try and find the things I used in 2.79 but pretty much everything I used was moved. The way I did was take it 1 step at a time. Use what you need at the current time and then look it up and go in forums and blogs and tutorials to find more info.

It’s has a steep learning curve, but that is to be expect from professional 3D Modeling software, watch some youtube videos and google what you need to do. I’ve learned the ropes and googled how to do volumetrics and got some pretty good looking results within the first week of actually sitting down and learning blender.
With great power comes great complication.

Thanks! I’ll definitely check it out.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll probably start on little builds and work my way up, and I’ll definitely go check out Guru!
