Why Does Smoothness Erode Terrain?

Hello there, this isn’t a really big issue but I’m really curious as the smoothness option for terrain helps, but I don’t know if this is a bug or is meant to be.

  • What are you attempting to achieve?
-I am attempting to see if this is meant to be or this is a bug, and how to troubleshoot this.

  • What is the issue?
-When I select and use the “Smooth” option on edges or parts of terrain, it sometimes erodes the terrain, and doesn’t make it smooth at all.

  • What solutions have you tried so far?
-I have searched up on DevForum and google but unable to find results and/or solutions.

If you have any idea on how to fix this or if there’s another way around to smoothing up without this happening, please reply and I will get back to you as soon as possible! Thank you!

I think it’s because you hold it down for too long. I suggest doing it for small amounts of time. Hope this helped.

I tried doing that too, but it doesn’t work either. Basically, when you click or hold it, it will be the same result.

That looks more like the Erode tool - verify that you’re using Smooth and try lowering the Strength in Brush Settings.

If that doesn’t work you could also try decreasing the Base Size; after testing in Studio doing this was also effective.

Yeah @n3ptunium I would suggest this be you next option.

I can verify that I’m using Smoothness. I also tried lowering the strength and base size, I can see a few improvements but the majority of the time doesn’t work.

It is due to your terrain being too thin. Add some terrain under that shoreline and there should be no problem at all.
