While logging in, I tried twice with the wrong password, and the third time was right.
EDIT: Apparently my third try was also wrong: You need to fail 3x, but with a valid username.
Before actually getting logged in, I get this error, apparently related to captcha because of my failed attempts.
(also the login screen itself gets that error, even in incognito mode. captcha is IP-specific apparently…)

Can’t reproduce, have you tried on different browsers?
It’s a PHP error, I highly doubt it’s because of my browser…
I tested it anyways with Microsoft Edge (after logging in on chrome, so I can do wiki stuff):
3x trying einsteinK:sdf (valid username + wrong password) will produce the error.
You might not have been able to reproduce it as you tried wrong+wrong+right.
Apparently when I thought I did it right, I still used the wrong password.
(used the “Lost Password” feature now though, I’m fine)
This still happens.
(yep I forgot my wiki password again, no idea why)
