Working on a Farm Life Sim [Devlog]

I recently started working on a Stardew Valley like game. So far I’ve finished the farming system, mining system, and the inventory system. It would be really helpful if you could recommend features I could add to make it more unique and tell me what you think of my progress so far!

Devlog #2

-I changed the name from Terra Tales to Melody Ridge. Tell me which one you like more!
-I added the ability for the player to hoe the ground and to cover it back up when necessary.
-Created the dialogue menu and the gardening shop
-The ability to cut trees
-The day/night cycle with a functional clock and calendar
-I also created the energy bar so that if the player uses all of their energy, they’ll pass out and the next day will begin.
-This is my first time creating animations so please tell me what you think of the hoeing and passing out animations

Devlog #3: Melody Ridge

Hello everyone! Welcome back to the third devlog for Melody Ridge. I’m excited to share some fantastic updates, including the new map, UI enhancements, and a sneak peek at upcoming features.

Village Map Development

Significant progress has been made on the village map where the player will live. Here is a list of buildings I’ve added to the village:

  • General Store
  • Trading Post
  • Blacksmith
  • The Boutique
  • Restaurant
  • Town Hall
  • Mines
  • Clinic
  • Four Homes & Mayor’s Home
  • Player’s Home
  • Fish Shop

You can check out a full showcase of the updated map here:

UI Enhancements

The UI has been revamped to be more aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly. Here’s a glimpse of the updated UI:

In addition, a new radial UI has been created for interactions with villagers:

Upcoming Features

  • Finishing the Map: Only a few more buildings to add.
  • Friendship/Marriage System: Work is underway to bring relationships to life in my game.
  • Pathfinding System: Ensuring NPCs can navigate the village efficiently.
  • Placement System: Allowing players to place objects within their home and farm
  • Leveling System: Adding progression mechanics for players.

Stay tuned for future updates as I continue to build and improve Melody Ridge. You can favorite the game on Roblox and follow me on Twitter for more updates!

Hey! How are you doing with Melody Ridge? I hope that fine, otherwise my statements are going to be quite disappointing. Out of pure curiosity I’ve bought the early access, which of looks like I am the first player, and decided to try out this aesthetically pleasing game.

I don’t want to seem rude. I’ve liked the game because I think that we should bet for more unique games on the platform even though it might seem like we’re doomed already. I like the stylized style, not unique but definitely cute; characters are my favorite. Trust me, I tried making ghibli trees in the past, I know they’re not easy.

Now: I honestly don’t see the game going anywhere, not yet. Inspiration by either Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley is clear. That is completely fine, nothing wrong with replicating good features. Now I think that those games, specially the late one, since it is sort of the community awaited “sequel” to the first, have something unharvestable, ironically. They have made themselves a spot in the so renounced cozy game genre, just like Animal Crossing and The Sims. Sadly, because of the already prevailing dominance of these titles in the genre, I guess that trying to burst in this type of games is hard without innovation; simply put, more farming games is not an option, not as they have already been done.

That first paragraph was kind of a personal view on the situation of the genre, if you wanted to have some opinion on the expected performance of the game economically wise. Now, to the actual matter that you have control over: I understand that the game is still heavily under development. However, considering that you are already talking about “finishing the map”, I assumed that a more robust product would already be offered when paying for the game…

  • There’s no apparent way of exiting the “Can you show me that cool tick again?” dialogue?
  • No way of entering buildings, if there is an interior at all.
  • Unintuitive hotbar controls. How is it that clicking an item puts it in the inventory instead of equipping it?
  • Clunkyness when doing actions and rapidly equipping different items.
  • As far as I’ve seen, if a tilled soil becomes dry (resetted back to grass) before the second till action is done, it simply stays dry. Doesn’t feel responsive to the player’s actions.
  • Fishing does not work, I think.

Those are the only things I’ve managed to figure out since, honestly, I haven’t played the game much more. It feels bland, with no disrespect; like there’s nothing to actually do and the environment, although beautiful feels voided, repetitive. I hope those things are on the works and that everything is going fine. That you are having fun doing what you like, that’s the most important thing at the end.

This whole critique is not out of rage, as I’ve already stated. I don’t mind having spent 25 robux on someone who deserves them. I just wanted to give you my little grain of sand as I’ve been struggling lately with making a nice, unique and complete game lately. Just make you remember that this has not been forgotten, at least for now.

I hope you have a great day, or afternoon in my case :stuck_out_tongue:.

Thank you for your feedback! I haven’t worked on Melody Ridge for quite a while because I shifted focus to a 2D platformer game that I started a couple of weeks ago. Yesterday, I resumed work on Melody Ridge. Here’s a sneak peek of the platformer game: Platformer Game. I believe this platformer has a better chance of success than Melody Ridge for the same reasons you mentioned about the genre.

Currently, I need drawn cutscenes for the platformer, so I’m in the process of learning how to draw while also working on Melody Ridge.

Regarding the controls in Melody Ridge, I should have listed them in the description which I have now added, so if they still feel wonky to you, please suggest better controls. For the dialogue, you can scroll down for more options. I initially wanted to display 4 dialogue options at once, but that would have made the dialogue box too big, so I went with the scroll option instead.

About the map, I should have clarified that the building’s exterior is almost done; I still need to work on the interior. The fishing system controls are in the description, and you can remove the dry soil after collecting your crop by right-clicking.

I hope this gives you a better understanding of how the game works and where I currently am with this project!
