Would a Wizard101 type of game work today?

Hey guys!

So I’m currently planning on developing a game similar to Wizard101 which is objectively a MMORPG turn-based card game. The original Wizard101 was actually advertised towards a younger audience, and managed to do pretty well for its time. But why is that today, games similar to that genre (Eg. Hexaria and Spellbound Magic RPG. These games tend to get 100-1000 players), don’t tend to be as popular as other games?

I want to start the development of a game similar to Wizard101, but if the turn-based card genre itself is not popular on Roblox I’m not sure if it’s something I should be working towards.

That being said, what are your opinions on this topic?

  1. Would you guys play something like Wizard101 on Roblox?
  2. How would I make a turn-based card game target Roblox’s main demographic? (Ages 9-15)
  3. What could be changed in games like Hexaria and/or Spellbound that would make it more popular?

This is actually a pretty simple question to answer. Roblox’s audience is young, so they tend to like the easier, straight-forward progress style games. Games that are more complex or confusing scare away younger audiences. That aside, Roblox’s algorithms favor predatory cash-grab games that bring the company the most revenue. These two factors combined, MMORPG games don’t have the largest audience on the platform.

If you are interested in making it, go for it. Make it a game you’d be interested in playing. Be careful to not have the first impression be too overwhelming - slowly lower players into the mechanics.

Parting advice? If the game interests you, go for it. Make something you’d want to play, and if you do that, others will come. Good luck.

In my opinion, Hexaria and Spellbound neither come close to the level of quality in the story, combat, and mechanics that I found in Wizard101. I might just be too nostalgic about Wizard101, and I don’t mean to say that these games are terrible, I’m just saying that I wouldn’t play them.

  1. I would, but only if it had an actual storyline and had some sort of the class system integrated in it. Also, if you started development, I’d be very interested in the game, so if you decide to do it could you make a development thread? Thanks
  2. Wizard101 already suits that demographic. 9 - 15 year olds don’t need super simple games, they just need the game to properly explain all its mechanics from the bottom up. And not with a long page of text, lol.
  3. In my opinion, Hexaria needs more challenging combat and to explain its systems more. It also needs to give players actual objectives other than ‘Kill x bandits’ or etc. Spellbound needs to be more strategic and harder, I think.

Also, if you’re looking for a really good Roblox card game, check out Adventure Story! - Roblox. It starts off easy but it quickly becomes challenging. It also has a good story.
