XENOFEST - Encyclopedia, Development Updates & Update Notes

GAME SUMMARY

XENOFEST is a fast-paced horde-shooter (CURRENTLY IN DEVELOPMENT) game about killing increasingly aggressive and dangerous hordes of aliens in a wave-by-wave fashion.
Players are given a wide variety of tools, weapons and utilities to survive the invasion for as long as they can, or until a boss is destroyed or an objective is completed.
Every five waves, players can change or upgrade their gear to prepare for the next waves.

HORDES OF ALIENS

Aliens come in tiers, the higher the tier the more dangerous and elusive they are, either given increased stats, a wider variety of attacks or to simply provide a challenge.

There are currently 13 completed aliens in XENOFEST. There will definitely be more as development continues, and as they are added, they will be added to the list below in their respective Tiers.

Fodder

Fodder is essentially the Martian Invasion’s cannon fodder, but not out of necessity or complex military strategy. They are the ones ‘testing the water’ to know whether the threat level is high enough to warrant a larger response by the Aliens.

But yes, when a threat response is determined, they do become fodder.

LANKY ALIEN
They are tall, relatively speedy and long-reaching aliens, but have very low health. No one is sure why they are fighting because they’re really bad at fighting.

MINI MARTIAN
They are the vastly more dangerous version of the Lanky, for they are faster and smaller, making them hard to hit. However they are stunned after getting hit and will also celebrate with a dance after successfully hitting an enemy, leaving the Mini Martian vulnerable. Minis can only be stunned once.

Despite their flaws, their dastardly nature is incredibly deadly during long battles, working as attrition units to ensure that the enemy grows weaker and easier to defeat as more hits are scored by Mini Martians.
Mini Martians are NOT babies. They are snotty little midgets but they are NOT BABY ALIENS. They just be like that.

MINI LEAPER
Sometimes, a Mini Martian may spontaneously produce offspring of their own. Mini Martian eggs always hatch into Leapers, an incredibly annoying litter-alien that are usually sent to jump themselves to death in a swamp somewhere. More often than not, they are recruited into warfare, packed into crates and thrown onto the battleground where their sheer annoyance is their weapon, drawing fire towards their hard-to-hit selves and laughing all the way to HELL.

Support

CHUNKY GRUNT
Chunky Grunts are Grey Grunts that found a way to automate their core workout sessions, but became addicted and ended up too big compared to the rest of their body. They are very slow, but have high health and a kick that can send players flying if they aren’t careful.

ALIEN CARRIER
Some Mini Martians are volatile, and must be stored in containers and be fed like a fish.
Thus, Carriers carry containers of these Mini Martians safely on their backs into the field of battle, waiting until close enough to a target to fall onto their backs and deploy a small crowd of Mini Martians directly onto the ground.

Alien Carriers rely on their armour to keep themselves alive to deploy Mini Martians close enough to a player, but this armour cannot sustain a Carrier post-deployment, defaulting to simply killing the carrier upon landing due to it’s flawlessmartian design.

SHIELD MARTIAN
Recluses within Martian society are commonly sent into warfare as part of encouraging them to go outside. Due to this, it is not uncommon to see them hiding behind shields in the battlefield. Luckily, they still need to see what’s ahead of them when they move, which results in them needing to quickly peek around their shields, leaving them vulnerable.

Once they are damaged enough, they will collapse and become more vulnerable for a short time as their shields fall to their sides. However, once they get back up, they will use their shields significantly more often, and move at you a lot faster.

MARTIAN DETONATOR
Once upon a time, an alien scientist had the freak idea to cover someone head to toe in powerful armor. This marvelously worked, but they made an extra variant of it as a joke, one where the back of the head and the legs were left exposed, the shoulders beeped loudly and the suit was rigged to explode violently once it got close enough to a target, causing both the martian inside and the target outside incredible amounts of pain. That made the data scientists very happy as they saw that the average pain caused per test was through the roof, and thus it was deployed onto the battlefield without a second thought or a hint of regret.

Luckily, since we are the humans in this case, flanking them or firing at their legs will be enough to take them out before they blow up screaming in your face. Sometimes.

COMMANDER
The presence of a Commander is always one to herald. Their rallying call will allow the commander to make nearby enemies resist up to 50% of damage taken, or 25% if they’re over 50 health.

The Commander is also capable of defending themselves by calling down robotic reinforcements. If they are left vulnerable, without any aliens nearby to defend them, they will seek out others. They must be removed whenever possible, as their support alongside powerful invaders makes them a dangerous threat.

Their thruster port is the most vulnerable to attacks, so getting in close after they finish attacking should be a priority when ranged encounters are too difficult. Firing at the dome will not deal damage, so you must fire at their hovercraft’s body instead.

REINFORCEMENT BOT
Reinforcement Bots are martian machinations made to draw fire from other martians by posing as a big enough threat. They are durable, fire a wide spread of projectiles, fast and robotic.

Soldiers

Soldiers are from the Direct Offensive branch of the Martian Invasion, after fodder is proven to not be enough, they are the second on the scene. They are more dangerous and have more varied attacks, although sometimes follow trends.

GREY GRUNT
Grey Grunts are a species of Martian reknown for their favouring of hand-to-hand combat. Grey ones are general stronger aliens with more health and damage, but move slower and can be stunned when shot.

GREEN GUNNER
Gunners reign from the Martian Militia Collective, where those who are capable are simply given a raygun and sent to the front lines. Gunners have lower health and usually miss, but only if you aren’t moving in a straight line away from them. They have strength in numbers.

MARTIAN SOLDIER
When a Green Gunner actually joins the military, this is what you get. Their helmets protect their heads from headshots, but not their face. They exchange their Raygun for a Rayrifle, which fires a spread of 3 faster travelling ray blasts.

Their training means they have the ability to broadly predict their target’s movement, firing ahead of the direction they’re moving. They have the capacity to deal more damage than a Green Gunner, and are willing to commit to it too - for themselves and their homeworld!

MARTIAN COMMANDO
Experienced in the art of espionage and evasion, the Commando has learned that just ‘taking fire’ wasn’t very smart, and have learned the efficiency of ‘getting out of the way before you freaking die’. Larger than Soldiers, and wielding an extra dangerous pistol in both hands, these troopers are efficient as ever, with their signature attack consisting of a wide barrage of projectiles.

ROCKET SOLDIER
It isn’t uncommon to find explosives in warfare, and Rocket Soldiers know this better than anyone else. Rocket Soldiers wield a powerful homing rocket launcher, firing their rocket high into the sky, where it will then lock onto players and fly towards them until impact - either blowing you to smithereens or kinda just exploding on the ground, hitting nothing.

Tanks

The big, bad villains of the Alien Invasion. Their attacks are fast, deadly, and without proper training by a human who faces them, they will prove fatal in an encounter. They have lots of health, and will not back down under any circumstances. When the rayguns don’t work, make them bigger and shoot lasers.

COLOSSAL GRUNT
As a direct result of extreme dedication and brutality, Colossal Grunts are incredibly eager to get into a battle, but are limited to only their body’s attacks, as well as their massive club. They specialise in stunning and disarming opponents, sending them flying uncontrollably with either a massive stomp, swing or kick.
Upon deployment, it is not uncommon to see them furiously charging at incredible speed towards their target. Luckily for the target, this exhausts the Colossal, making them slower.
Their fury remains however, and they will grow faster and more enraged the more they are struck, giving a glimpse of what they could be, if only they were a bit stronger.

LASER MINIGUNNER
Some colossal grunts are too smart to simply be given a club and told to start swinging. Instead, they’re given a deadly Laser Minigun and told to start blasting. Their augmentations give them a commanding presence on the battlefield and increased health, controlling them and making their movements fine-tuned for maximum carnage. Their lasers cannot be dodged due to them literally being as fast as light, but thankfully Alien technology hasn’t figured out that colouring their lasers red will make them 100% accurate, most of the time.

MARTIAN WALKER
Hear their stomps, and weep. A slow moving, tri-legged beast with supreme intimidation tactics. First created as a joke before the invention of Drones, the Walker will chase after foes with a barrage of dangerous attacks, including its mighty explosive cannon, deployment of Tesla Rods as well as it’s tactical shockwave and homing missiles.

Bosses

When the best doesn’t cut it, send in the bester. Boss martians are a commanding presences, a definitive test of skill, endurance and will to persevere. Trained from birth, developed their whole lives, perfected in the art of invasion and ready to finish a fight whenever possible, they truely are the boss.

Alien Lore Bits

The colour of an alien is the result of what they eat.

  • Grey means they eat mostly space fish and rocks.
  • Green means omnivorous or plant-based.
  • Blue means that they don’t eat at all, instead preferring the ability to absorb starlight and turn it into energy.
  • Red means they only eat other aliens.
  • Black means that they signed a contract with a stellar death-cult to exchange offerings of food with dark power.
  • Purple means that even they don’t know what they eat.

Some Laser Minigunners win their fights, and are thrown into suns if they survive their battle as their post-victory adrenaline is too dangerous to other aliens.

Mini Leapers can survive warfare and the Jump Swamp and grow into Leapers, a process that usually takes thousands of years. Not one Leaper has been found outside of captivity.

Colossal Grunts sometimes eat Mini Martians when they misbehave.

Martian Commandos have wheels in their boots they use to dash.

The Defender is some chump who kills aliens really well. They are very good at killing aliens.

WEAPONRY

Weaponry is, shockingly, used to kill aliens, and sometimes other players, but still mostly aliens.
Weapons have infinite ammo and are only limited to their reload speed and magazine size, if I even decide to have those in the game.

PISTOLS

Pistol

PISTOL
// Modelled after the Makarov pistol.

You always start with a pistol, usually. The pistol is accurate as the assault rifle - maybe even more so, but fires nowhere near as fast and with slightly less per-round damage. It is a good all-rounder for the first waves before you get your first weapon.

Burst Pistol

BURST PISTOL
// Modelled after the M93R pistol.

You always start with a pistol, usually not a burst fire one, although I knew Doom Eternal was going to have you start with a burst fire pistol at some point in development. With higher damage potential than the pistol with it’s 3 Round burst, it suffers at longer ranges with it’s poor accuracy and low per-bullet damage.

Automatic Pistol

AUTOMATIC PISTOL
// Modelled after the TEC 9
Bullets mean damage. So naturally, more bullets means more damage.

WRONG! It means more opportunities for damage. Fortunately, the Automatic Pistol has remarkable accuracy for its size and firerate. Its probably because the bullets only do 1 damage each.

Revolver

Revolver
// Modelled after the MP413 REX.

Revolvers in fiction don’t always make sense. Hey, I have a gun that will turn that cowboy-hat wearing head into a $300 squib from across this town that can’t fit the both of us. I will also be 100% accurate, and destroy everything I touch.

No. Revolvers aren’t like that. Movies are like that. Revolvers don’t destroy, they simply make a big hole. Of course, big holes are very good when you want something to hurt. Like martians.

The one thing movies won’t change here is that the revolver spins in your hand when you shoot it - and if you want a demonstration, look here, my green friend.

This planet ain’t big enough for the two of us.

Snubnose Revolver

Snubnose Revolver
// Modelled after the Fitz Special.

They say the detective is only as good as his eyes, trenchcoat and trigger finger. In reality, detectives are a lot more boring - but their guns are still cool.

One might question the purpose of a concealed weapon on the front lines with active combat, where the enemy assumes you have a weapon already aimed at them, even if your hands are behind your back.

The Snubnose questions the question. It doesn’t claim to be needed, and it doesn’t claim to be the driving force. It understands its place in the world, and it isn’t afraid of anything - whether its from Earth, or not.
That’s what matters.

But the gun is still pretty unremarkable. It does look cool though, and it spins.

Filthy Revolver

Eventually guns got so big, and so powerful, that it became comical. The wild west was littered with body bits and huge six shooters - whether the splatter was the shooter or the shot was indeterminable.

It fires slowly. It hits like a supersonic sewer cover. It’s bullets exit orbit when it misses. And boy, does it miss. So what was the the point? Did people just think bigger would be better? Was the idolization of times that ‘never were’ simply the product of an undesirable present reality?

Those are questions. Questions about revolvers. Revolvers don’t need questions.
Usually. There’s one that gets thrown around a lot.

“Do I feel lucky?”

RIFLES

Rifle

RIFLE
// Modelled after a bolt action rifle with 1 shot

Precision is everything, sometimes. Slow, bolt-action firerate but still very capable of holding your own against the alien horde. It’s most useful function is eradicating Mini Martians in one hit before they get close to you or your fellow teammates.

Semi Carbine

SEMI CARBINE
// Modelled after the Sub 2000

Precision. Damage. Firerate. We don’t min-max with this weapon, we just see the aliens, and line them up with the crosshairs.

Despite not technically being a rifle due to being a carbine, no one should care enough to change it’s classification and function as one. Powerful damage, semi-automatic and accurate. If you like feeling like every shot you take matters, we will give this to you, and you will ask no further questions.

Especially if you think it’s not rifle-class.

Sniper

SNIPER
// Modelled after the Intervention / M200

Do a trickshot, I dare you. The Sniper is a slow firing, bolt action sniper that can defeat many enemies with a well-aimed headshot. Comes with a FREE scope! Laser sight not included.

Shoot fodder from a distance, pick off high priority targets that are currently wiping out your entire team or miss completely due to playing on a trackpad.

Heavy Sniper

HEAVY SNIPER
// Modelled after the Serbu BFG 50

When firerate is king and you want to get away with regicide, look no further. A super slow firing, high range, single shot .50 caliber can solve many problems with the exception of hordes of Minis.

SHOTGUNS

Shotgun

SHOTGUN
// Modelled after what I think basic pump action shotguns should look like. Seriously, they all look the same to me. I didn’t even get a real gun to reference it off of. They are so easy to model.

Effective for longer at the cost of shooting shorter. High damage up close, not so much when far away. Perfect for taking on fights with melee enemies that like to get up in your face and pay with their brains.

Double Barrel Shotgun

DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN
// Modelled after… well… double barrel shotguns.

With great power comes great responsibility, and great loss in firerate. Fires high-damage pellets with tighter spread than the normal shotgun, but fires slower. Very effective with any enemy, especially when combo’d with other weapons.

Tactical Shotgun

TACTICAL SHOTGUN
// Modelled after the Nova.

With consistent damage potential comes great accuracy. The Tactical Shotgun is like a normal shotgun, because you shoot it then CHK-CHUNK then you shoot it again.

Despite shotgun’s nature for being inaccurate, lazy and refusing to check if they’re sitting on the remote due to their body mass fusing with the couch, the Tactical Shotgun is much more kind, but much more violent.

It is more accurate, it has higher damage per pellet and fires a lot of pellets. I hope you like tactically splattering Mini Martians across an AFL field. Don’t know what AFL means? Well it stands for Aliens Freaking Ldiewhenyoushootthemwiththisgun.

Combat Shotgun

COMBAT SHOTGUN
// Modelled after the AA12.

With great damage potential comes great lack of accuracy. The Combat Shotgun is like a normal shotgun, except fully automatic and fed by a drum magazine, making it nothing like a normal shotgun.

Due to being a shotgun, it is very powerful at close range and against large groups of enemies.
Due to being automatic, you can hold onto the trigger and hold on for your life.
Due to being a shotgun with these factors, it is very inaccurate at medium range.

It’s your very own automatic shotgun, and it’s a COMBAT shotgun too. I’m not too sure what the combat part means, although it probably means it’s good at it.

MULTI-FIRE

Submachine Gun

SUBMACHINE GUN
// Modelled after the MP40 SMG.

When you want to just hold down the trigger, the Submachine Gun’s all you need. Deals more damage than the pistol, but fires relatively slowly for an automatic weapon, and has pretty poor spread. Still, very useful in the waves before things start getting stronger.

Burst Rifle

// Modelled after the FAMAS

Firing once is sometimes enough. Firing three times with a clunky delay between those three shots? Much better. Deals more damage per shot than the SMG, and more accurate. In a single burst, it can destroy minis, cripple most basic enemies on a headshot, and make you lunch. Best at close-medium range, struggles with hitting at a distance.

But it’s also a french gun.

PDW

// Custom Design

A super fast firing, fully automatic PDW. The catch? It’s spread.

Whilst supremely powerful at close range, shredding martians, that’s also the same range where you put yourself in the most danger. “Durrr, so stand back!” You might think. Won’t work. Spread too big.

In fact, if you stood against a wall, faced away from it and fired the PDW, you might hit that same wall.

Assault Rifle

ASSAULT RIFLE
// Modelled after the RM277. I will die before I model a darn M4A1, M16 or AK variant.

A fast firing, fully automatic rifle. It’s what it says on the box. It fights, and it fights good.

If I had a worse sense of humor and were slightly more inclined to annoy people, I would have made this weapon an AR15.

Machine Gun

// Modelled after the Negev LMG
Hi, I’m the Machine Gun. If you’ve chosen me over the Compact Grenade Launcher, thank you! I will do my best. I shoot fast, I do lots of damage, and I can headshot.

What do you mean accuracy? Oh, well… it’s good. It’s pretty good. Look how detailed my finely modeled chassis is! Look at all the bullets in my belt… each one waiting to kill… I’m so excited to shoot them fresh from my mysteriously bottomless box magazine ~ Oh no, it’s a group of Martian Soldiers! Lets ANNIHILATE THEM.

Yay! WE did it. Aren’t YOU glad you chose me over the Compact Grenade Launcher!!?? I have so many more use cases outside of demolishing two Mini Martians at once and One ShotTIng GreEN GUNNERS!!! I AM THE BETTER WEA-

Battle Rifle

// Modelled after the F90 MBR

An Assault Rifle is one thing, a Battle Rifle is another. Assault is one-on-one, but a Battle is MORE-on-MORE. MORE damage. MORE dead aliens. MORE FIGHTING!!! (or maybe less, considering you can end fights faster the more firepower you have?)
Boasting higher damage, better accuracy and only a slightly lower fire rate than the Assault Rifle, the Battle Rifle is the epitome of automatic firearms that aren’t ridiculously small or absolutely humongous.

SPECIAL

Compact Grenade Launcher

// Modelled after the 40MM grenade launcher

Sometimes, you find yourself surrounded by minis with only a rifle to your name.

Not anymore.

The Compact Grenade Launcher is specially made to deter pesky little aliens from dancing on your dead body. Simply aim it at your feet, and watch them vanish! The Compact Grenade Launcher also deals damage to a target upon direct hit, whilst also applying damage from the explosion. It is limited at range and slow to fire, but very powerful.

Rocket Launcher

// Modelled after the M202 FLASH

Scoped. Explodes when you shoot it. Lets you rocket jump. What more can you want? Can one hit many troops on a direct hit, but struggles with large groups of stronger enemies due to its significantly weaker splash damage. Works very well on Walkers due to large target and direct hit damage bonus.

Heavy Grenade Launcher

// Modelled after the MGL i guess

Can’t aim too much without having your brain leak out of your ears? Get distracted easily when your senses aren’t overwhelmed with the sound of explosions and death 24/7? The Heavy Grenade Launcher is your solution. Still features a direct-hit bonus, but is significantly weaker, but still exceptional at erasing hordes with splash damage. Works very well on Walkers due to large target and direct hit damage bonus.

Laser Cannon

// Custom Design

If you hate Aliens but love their technology, here is the present of a lifetime. Point it at an Alien you don’t like, tug the lever, and watch them become the same space-dust that created them so many billions of years ago.

With perfect accuracy, a constant stream of ultra-boosted plasma-proton juice and brutal damage.

Chaingun

// Custom Design

Everything dies.

POTENTIAL FUTURE WEAPONS

  • Lightning Gun - jumps between enemies it hits, like a laser cannon but less range
  • RPG - bigger explosions, faster projectiles, one shot and less drop
  • bass cannon - sends enemies flying
  • crossbow - crossbow that poisons enemies
  • flamethrower - but if i want to add enemy debuffs i need to code it wah wah wah

UTILITIES

Players can have extra tools and gear to help them fight. They can equip 3, or 4 with a gamepass or round modifier.

UPDATES

THERE ARE NONE
// I have to release the game first.

Q&A

When will XENOFEST release?
When I feel happy with what’s there.

When will you post teasers?
When I feel like it, and I will post them in WAYWOC or maybe a Creations Feedback thread.

Who are you working with?
Jamstroxian. They’re really cool you should play their games. I heard that they own Imagination Industrial.

Can I help you make this?
You can help by messaging me interesting, unique suggestions here or on Twitter. I don’t really want anyone working on my projects but myself.

Can you work for me?
I work for myself. I don’t do commissions because I don’t trust anybody.

Do you need investors?
No, but when the game is nearing release, maybe.

Do I need to refer to XENOFEST as XENOFEST, or can I refer to it as Xenofest / xenofest?
I use ‘XENOFEST’ when branding a teaser or game media, ‘Xenofest’ in official scenarios and ‘xenofest’ in chats like Discord or in-game chat. You don’t need to follow my rules because you’re a different person. Refer to it any way you want, which is me realizing that this question is stupid. Write it backwards, even. Add two more O’s. Go wild.
