"Zoo Tycoon" game idea, what could make it work?

I remember playing a long time ago a game similar to “Zoo Tycoon”, where you would go around maps collecting animals that you could bring to expand your zoo, so I wanted to try making that idea as it seemed pretty unique.
Thing is, I noticed that games similar to this often fail and are forgotten. How could I tweak the idea so it could have success?

If you can make a game that’s engaging and keeps players in the game long then you’re pretty much good to go, so that then comes down to the mechanics of the game that’s what you need to focus on

I recommend veering away from your typical tycoon game of buying stuff and waiting for more money to pile in. You maybe could have it where the player can buy faster vehicles, new areas, better animal catching equipment, more enclosures, better enclosures, etc. This would have the player running around doing tasks and would make your game more interesting.
