[Action Needed] Upcoming Changes to Asset Privacy for Audio

Also instead of doing this they should actually improve the search for audio. Let’s say I search for gun shot I get some random music that is completely unrelated made by roblox, and that is about 50% the rest is like 20% audio that can’t even play.

Tbh the best way to handlw the situation is easy. Roblox could have just made an auto AI thing like what they have with models with viruses.

Youtube was sued, and won that court case as they fell under safe harbor laws.

Music Companies are needlessly aggressive for no other reason than that they think some kid playing a Roblox game with some audio is going to make a negative impact on their wallets.

Does this also mean that radios and boomboxes will not work anymore? From what I’ve read, I’m taking a guess that commands like :music in popular administation commands like Adonis will not work anymore, and the boombox gears will just be something that will soon be history of some good memories.

ok, we first need to acknowledge what the lawsuit against roblox is saying
the lawsuit cites multiple times it seemingly doesnt even try to get rid of copyrighted music and went as far as saying they encouraged it
so why not model the update after that fact? make it look like you are trying
its not really that hard to ruin a bunch o’ games

im now going to cope harder and eat mint ice cream

Okay how on earth do I “share” the sound so it works for other users?

i am not talking about the old lawsuit from 2021, they might have been threated with a new one from an even larger music company. since this update seems rushed

didnt they already remove a lot of music due to copyright in 2019~? why is that a case now?

Wasnt the death sound going to be removed or changed? Because that was big in early 2020

if you feel that way then i do not know what to tell you chief
._.

They won’t work anymore. Radios will only work if the audio used is uploaded by the person who created the experience, or Roblox.

Gotta love that the 99% of the negative responses on this post are people who steal audio.

Regardless, this is a great update. I make sound effects under a different name and my effects have been stolen a multitude of times by people. Have been reuploaded. Have been pushed completely out of my hands. It’s unfair considering that I put hours into my work. Robbed of money.

Developers want money from their games but, they’re totally fine robbing money from the people who make their sounds. It’s pretty messed up if you think about it.

The fact that Roblox took measures against this is unexpectedly incredible. They’re starting to actually value work that audio creators put in. They’re starting to take IP ownership/copyright infringement seriously.

If you’re mad about that, look into a mirror and really grasp why you’re even on this platform or better yet, put yourself in the shoes of someone who gets their work stolen. Would you like your hard work reuploaded? Sound effects are not simple. There’s a lot of tweaking, sampling, etc. It takes a while to get right.

In the industry of sounds and music, companies require specific licenses from the author to be able to publish, use or play forms of work. That’s how people make money off what they create. When you have a marketplace that effectively bypasses that, you are infringing someone else’s hard work.

Unless audio was cleared (I.e verified in writing by the original author that you can use it), it can’t be used. Therefore, all of the audio that people have to change out of their games is actually a protection against you. Because guess what? You’re infringing on someone else’s work.

On top of that, audio is free to upload with limits. I mean, I don’t know what more you people could want. This helps everyone. Protects you. Values people’s work and removes the need to spend robux for audio.

Some people just can’t be happy with stuff.

but for people who sells products what they made, this is still a bad things,as the sound is uploaded by them, the sound will be gone when they using in other places.

Not necessarily, there are valid points being made especially in regards to the ridiculous proposed limits (specifically for non-verified users).

I don’t feel like “music stealer” is the appropriate title for a person who cant afford 100 robux per audio  its also a really iffy generalization since ive always used NCS music from the toolbox

I personally dislike this point but I def see where ur comin from

Ikr, im so evil when i use a sound effect that is publically avaliable in the toolbox and was created and published as a public asset, muahahah

The limit is freaking insane. I can only upload 10 sounds a month when I’m making a game with over 75 original ones so far. My progress on a game I’m making shouldn’t be stopped because of some halfassed upload limit.

And also I CANT USE SOUNDS THAT I MADE THAT I UPLOADED UNDER MY OWN ACCOUNT.

You do know that this update is a problem for basically every game developer/ studio/ group out there? Even front page games use third party audio which cannot be used anymore. The fact that developers are given such a short amount of time to try and solve this issue before the update goes live is terrible to say the least.

Ofcourse I’m happy audio uploads are becoming free, it gives players more room for ideas and creativity, but the way they are handling the privating of audio is basically the same as how they implemented the filtering enabled debacle.

We understand that. But it seems a bit over-reactive to outright ban the use of any audio in-game unless uploaded by the game creator. Imagine if one day TikTok announced “we’re banning the use of all sounds except for the original creator of the sound.” The news and social media would be all over that.

While this may appear to be a good point at first .We must understand the historical context of why it happened, and how things have changed since then. Back in the mid to late-2000’s the internet was taken less seriously (especially YouTube.) YouTube wasn’t seen as “on-par” with traditional television. And some believed the safe harbor prevision didn’t apply to online services like YouTube. Thankfully the courts sided with Google/YouTube.

Now in 2022, the internet is taken more seriously then it has ever been before (especially during the pandemic.) And practically the same arguments were made by the music labels as Viacom made in 2009. But we know that online services (like Roblox, YouTube, Twitch, ect.) are protected under the safe harbor provisions of the DMCA act. So an attempted lawsuit on Roblox citing “copyright infringement” would be a lot harder then it was back in the late-2000’s.

I’m legally obligated to say that I’m not a lawyer and you should not approach me with legal questions or use me as legal advice in any way or capacity.

and here’s seriously people who upload audio which was uncopyrighted,or even made by them, and they are nice to make it to free and sell to everyone, but after this update roll out,the audio became private again, they cant make it public and share it into roblox world, and also here’s people who upload their own audio into their alts too

Please keep in mind this is essentially making it impossible to even share audio that you have created and have given permission to use, 99% of the negative responses are NOT by people who “steal” audio, we are simply using what has been given to us on the toolbox.

Even still, this update is not even going to fix this stealing issue, if anything this is nothing more than a rushed band-aid patch.

I in no way endorse stealing assets of any kind, audio is no exception.

But when you say that 99% are by people who steal audios, that is where my suspension of disbelief is pushed too far.

You are right, sound effects are not simple. And that’s why we use the toolbox to find these sounds to help us with our projects.

But this update is not only taking that away, but is also making it impossible to hire people that CAN make those sounds via forcing every single audio to be private, and they’re only giving us essentially just EDM music and stingers, bare bones when it comes to actual sound effects.
