[Action Needed] Upcoming Changes to Asset Privacy for Audio

You can disagree with me, but I’m just stating my opinion. They could’ve executed this better. I am not hating on roblox, but it is their fault for doing the audio this way.

Hopefully temporarily until the owner of the audio can configure the privacy settings (and by doing so assume responsibility for said audio).

This won’t help the countless orphaned audios that were used in countless quantity of games, most of which aren’t going to be updated. :frowning:

Thank you for your contribution.

Uh is this temporary to just remove the bad copyrighted music from the platform i hope this is temporarily or they are joking this update will ruin Roblox and so many games that use the sound library. I mean this can’t be forever right? clueless

Whilst I agree, to defend Roblox then this is likely a form of cease and desist order, of which they have mere weeks to comply with.

If they don’t comply with it, they will be fined massive amounts, and your DevEx rates could plummet.

This is an absolutely stupid update; I’ve been on the platform for 6 years now and I’ve never seen anything like this! Now let me address accouple arguments before I give my general opinion. This conversation is split into 4 different sides. the first two main sides are the 1. “I love this update” and 2. “I hate this update”. Personally, I am on neither side, and here is why. let’s break this down, first things first I do NOT like this update because it will affect all developers. small, big, any will all be affected by this update. at first you might think “oh, it’s just audio.” well no. audio was developed onto Roblox to make games not silent and with this they will be. not only that but let’s say someone is making a game with multiple levels with multiple audio clips like the normal elevator. well with this update people cannot make these games anymore. PLUS, things like rhythm games. now without HD audio these games will be forced to shut down. Now with the first argument out of the way I also like SOME THINGS about it. like one is the fact you can upload free audio. and also, you may hear the word “6 seconds” get thrown around a lot. this means stuff like OLD audio and with new ones

Blockquote: I think you’re confused on the whole 6 second thing. It’s not an upload length limit. It’s the threshold where they will make the existing(old) audio private. 6 seconds has nothing to do with newly uploaded audio. Nothing at all.

  • Sir_Highness
Now I do think the privating of these audios are still a little harsh and other people agree with me too, like:

Blockquote, this update was a bad idea to begin with.

  • Redstone_Retriever
Also, sorry to break it to you guys but you can’t just pirate audios and upload them to Roblox. it’s illegal and unethical, which brings me into my next topic and first sub-category.

Blockquote, Ez just do what I did: 1. Go to the pages of the audios that will be blocked 2. Download them 3. Reupload them 4. Profit???

  • LeiSatan
The first sub-category is ‘The piraters’. these guys are kind of going off of my last topic of people thinking this is due to copyright. THIS IS NOT BEACUSE OF BEING SUED! Its because to upload a copyright audio you need to pay money and therefore Roblox is profiting off of it, thats why they are making it free in the first place.

Blockquote, I would like to point out that Roblox has reasons for what they did. Your main point here seems to be that big corporations do these things for absolutely no reason and have to listen to us about it, when in reality there’s many professionals there who have made these decisions and believe them to be the right ones. TL; DR: Roblox had a reason for doing this. Also, I’m not saying I agree or disagree with Roblox’s actions. I am staying neutral until I have enough information to form an opinion.

  • superhypercrazy1
essentiality, they think they can download an ILLEGAL plugin and “Profit” off of it

Blockquote, 3. Reupload them 4. Profit???

  • LeiSatan
Please, DO NOT DO THIS! some of these “plugins” could be a virus and you do not want that! These guys can also be apart and sometimes from the other sub-genre witch I am about to talk about.

Blockquote, Best update ever, now i can upload 5000 audios !..

  • NameSpookbtw

Blockquote, this is an awesome update i cant wait

  • lololjgjjgghg
The next sub-genre is ‘The trollers’. These guys just want attention and that’s all… Do not respond to these people because they are just attention seekers. Now, I think this update is absolutely stupid because like I said “6 second audio sucks”. I like how uploading audio is free now but I mean come on Roblox, 6 seconds??? anyway, RANT OVER!

YES! Couldn’t have said it better myself!

Sadly the further this site ages the less hope I have for them to TRULY listen to their community. This site has been a money grabber for a very very long time and they will realize what damage has been done when it is too late.

I agree with this, They could’ve handled this in somewhat of a better way and not have to remove every single Roblox audio in the library

This update seems like a huge mistake, especially to small developers.

In a mimic of Roblox, I will explain such as to my opinion:

This change is to take place on March 22nd which, at the time of writing, is in twelve days. Is this enough time for developers to begin wasting their own time converting audio? I know not one developer who sits down and makes SFX for their game repetitively (unless it does not already exist, but the context is that they make every single sound in their game). So, how is forcing someone to change audio very respectful to our creator rights?

The Audio Discovery Plugin is great, surely, and could have been established in a more mannered update, but not with this treacherous announcement. However, it’s clear as dawn that you thought the inclusion of “compensation” by removing the Audio Upload Fee would clear up all of this backlash.

But more importantly, you chose to limit audios at 7 seconds. Not (under) 10 seconds, 15 even. You, Roblox, have set the bar as low as can do with bare minimum respect to (especially small) developers. Only ten uploads a month for people who don’t ID-verify? Then the inclusion that you would incorporate the change into other forms of assets? Not everybody has time to maintain or even apply for a Government document, nor might even have a photo (or an up-to-date one) on their current documents. Most of them listed have an expiration or extra maintenance requirement AND cost money.

The truth seems to be that you want your platform’s content to include many of your own SFX and music. Yet only few yield enough tempo or sound to qualify for such which is why people have been creating their own. You’re also adding an extra threshold of 2,000 a month for those (possibly) apart of DevEx? It’s almost like you’re favoring the rich over the poor. I hope this is reconsidered and some changes are established such as the upload limit and the release time because this is clearly a mess.

Please no, I know 350 robux is expensive for some people but its way better than this. As a lot of people said, this will break many games (including my favorite rythm game D: )
There isn’t even time to adjust to this change… if you are doing this at least give us time.

We are all asking, don’t do this.

Aside from the costy, yet preferable solution that would be an AI to detect copy-righted material, I actually can agree with the library being by default set to private. It seems like a really easy way to prevent rulebreakers.

Roblox’s implementation was, however, unnacceptable.

For games with high reliance on music, it can take a lot of time to reupload the songs. It does not help the 12 day period to fix it. This should have been announced months before the actual removal, to give developers the opportunity to fix the issue. People have private lives. Not everything is Roblox. They can not assume all developers will just have the availability to comply with it.

The alternative solution would be to just make all newly updated sounds private and keep the others public. Roblox could then crack down the rulebreaking stuff, thus not silencing games and allowing previous audio uses.

Another thing that really bothers me is the absurdly low limit for people with no age verification. It is completely understandable that developers do not feel safe with sharing this to Roblox. This idea of restricting non verified users just strikes me as desperation to get everyone’s identity.

A lot of people are happy that sound uploading is free. Let’s say you are making a shooter right? Let’s see how many sounds you need for a single weapon. Shooting sound, reload, on hit, and other options you can add such as ricochet or bullet grasp, between others. You already wasted half of your upload limit. Not to mention announcers, music, and all other weapons’ sfx. You would probably take years to get to upload all sounds you want. It would be honestly better to just have the tax. At least they could have put the tax after reaching the limit, which didn’t happen.

You might argue sounds are unecessary. Not for every game. Not to mention sound diversity shows a lot of polish from your game! If you wanted to make a polished game and have the 10 sound limit, you might as well leave the platform.

I understand the legal pressures from the lawsuits and such. This is the result of the failed moderation that has been going on for years on the platform and now is hitting the developers. Nevertheless, even if some requirements could not have been met, this changes could have been handled in a much better way, especially regarding the new uploading system.

i found out while reuploading audio for my group games, the limit on groups is broken or i somehow got the 2k limit on my group considering non of the devs are id verified
prob it being broken because the counter wont update

This is very … scary. Games like breaking point will definitely break.

It is very likely to be a cease and desist which are 1-2 week warnings. Be grateful you even have 12 days and not 7. You cannot have months of preparation.

There’s about 90 billion asset IDs. This is like trying to hack a famous Roblox dev’s account (e.g Newfissy/asimo) by manually typing in passwords. Good luck.

I will agree on this. 10 a month is unacceptable. Like, come on!

I believe the opposite if anything. Sound is essential to the running of a game.

@AnubisNoir said on Discord that:

I’d argue if Roblox’s moderation was successful they could survive the suit (hence the failure of Viacom v. Youtube, due to DMCA safe harbor protections) but their moderation’s garbage and thus an argument could be successfully made

Therefore, I believe it is also possible that roblox moderation had a role in it.

This could’ve been good, but as a developer, making existing audios private isn’t a good idea. I made some guns with some animations that are SYNCED to the audio, and if I can’t use the audio, it would just ruin the tool. Plus, as someone said, some older audios won’t be able to be set to public as they were made by older accounts that probably quit roblox a decade ago. So at least don’t private ALL current audios, just let use private them by ourselves if we want to, as this update would break most games.

id say most games on roblox will break due to this, roblox has no concern for developers and honestly they could of approached this update in a way better way than just making all audios private lol

please change your mind roblox…

as I said, roblox, at least don’t make all audios private, it’s just a dumb idea to break a lot of games. For example, what if you are a new game developer, and need gun sounds. It would be hard to find audio for the games. This update could hurt new game developers.
I also think that this would ruin a lot of classic roblox games, this could be a sign that roblox is trying to eliminate their own history by privating sounds on games that the creators probably quit roblox years ago

The compensation of having many new audio models from popular sources just seems like a bandaid for the gapping hole this kind of update can and will create. It’s almost impossible sounding to essentially see the ENTIRE AUDIO LIBRARY being wiped clean. What about the millions of people who are not online anymore? How can they fix their audio back to public when they don’t have their focus on the platform anymore?

I think there’s however a way to fix it. Here’s some of my ideas:

  • Make any audio to be private instantly public after there is a way for audio to be safely published as public.
  • Allow players to request audio to be public if they were made private after the update
  • Audio that’s being used the most should remain public after some scanning. Having this kind of system could save audio that is usually in use of the games respectively

Also some general ideas:

  • Increment the maximum audio per month by 5 multiplied by the amount of years the account has existed on the platform
  • Enable infinite audio publishing but the account must pay Robux to publish audio past the limit

With some renovations in the right angle, this update shouldn’t be as bad as we all thought, so long as Roblox takes the actions neccessary to initialize those renovations.
