[Action Needed] Upcoming Changes to Asset Privacy for Audio

Roblox is destroying itself

Why donā€™t Roblox just use a copyrighted filter system operated by an AI or automation to detect copyrighted sound like what Youtube does, limiting every single audio asset including all of them which uploaded earlier is completely unreasonable, some music compressors which make their own music asset for the community to use now need to make a discord server and provide mp3 file for others to upload their own?
The hardest part of replacing is some of the FXs are being made by original sound compressors, you wouldnā€™t be able to find them anywhere on the public domain sites unless you can right-click and save the mp.3 from the library page then thatā€™s fine. But still, Roblox shouldā€™ve aware that 6 seconds isnā€™t what determines which sound asset is risks to be copyrighted and should be set to private. I wonder of Roblox even aware that some of the FXs such as large blast door, hum FXs, gun reload FXs, charging FXs are mostly over 6 and could be last to minutes?
I understand that some user has tried to bypass the filter system but is it really worth dragging down other legal sound assets including millions of game together? Tbh, this reminds me of animation which kinda much affects to the open-sourced contributors. But now itā€™s sound which you couldnā€™t just give them the raw keyframe included in the place file like what animation do, you gotta get those clients to upload their own which is kinda make no sense.
Some of the game developers which are no longer online but their game are still running with thousands of active players, whatā€™d happen then? Pretty sure anyone reading this will knew.

Should Roblox be filtering out unauthorized copyrighted assets and terminate them?
A: Yes.
Should the Audio uploading take no charge?
A: Yes.
Should Roblox force all uploaded sound assets to private?
A: Obviously no.

aw man guys, i would put some professionallity into this but who cares, you guys did such an amazing update, your whole community hates it and is pretty annoyed that they have to replace literally every audio in their entire game by scraping it and reuploading it or using your free music that most likely wont fit with their game. the only good thing you guys did was give id people 100 audio uploads and non-id people 10 audio uploads for free.

oh wait? whats that, you give a bunch of random people 2000 audio uploads? what? i didnt get that, i have over 200k visits and im in the beta test program, yet you guys just give it to randoms. great job roblox, keep it up, giving us some amazing updates!

No fixing anything now, itā€™s only a matter of time till 90% of the audio is erasedā€¦

This will hurt many games such as Dummyzā€™s Audio Visualizer, Auto Rap Battles, and RoBeats, all linked here -

Part of this game, as well as many other gameā€™s interactivity and engagement is caused by the audios that others have helped publish, and this will make the jobs of hundreds of thousands of developers, big and small, much harder.

I really hope you all can reconsider this and find some other way to work things out. The community has voiced our opinions and many people are against this. Personally, I feel that developers should have had much more time, at least a month or even longerā€™s notice in advance to prepare for this change. 2 weeks is just too short, especially for games that use audio uploaded by others to engage people through music.

There are several detailed posts about the many problems with this update and I can only hope Roblox staff are reading them, taking note of what we say, and reconsidering what they have done.

All in all, I really do believe that this update is more bad than good, due to how many people this will severely affect. Feel free to make a counterargument to me if you disagree; I am open to hear how others feel on this.

TL;DR: Please reconsider this, Roblox. It is hurting developers AND yourselves more than helping by giving us little time to adjust and getting rid of the audio upload fee. Imagine the drawbacks to this if you start getting hundreds of bypassed audios at once; It would overwhelm you and developers.

Thanks.

I agree so much, amazing update. Best one yet. I think this increases audio asset ids from going around and players using boomboxes to play bypassed or inappropriate audio, etc. This feature will benefit a lot of smaller and starting developers. Iā€™d also advice that everyone stops spreading rumors about how many uploads a player gets. I have 2000 for almost no reason at all. I donā€™t own premium, never devxā€™d, not verified, not famous or big game creator, etc.

You can try censoring sensitive information. I havenā€™t verified yet, so I donā€™t really know if itā€™ll work. You could use a Passport since thereā€™s no sensitive information in it.

Youā€™re right though, I see no reason to make all audios private, people made them public for a reason, if they want it private they can do it themselves.

oh hey not to mention

Robeats CS
a popular rhythm game in roblox that uses TONS of audios because it has a TON of songs

and Jukeā€™s Towers of hell

9 rings around 12 towers each one having 10 music zones
1080 audios used
(this is not even counting the 5 zones and 2 subrealms and the event archives)

I agree, this is good for new developers. Ive been developing for awhile now and it will screw most of my games and I have a generous 2 weeks to fix literally every game I have made on this site! We still need clarity on the 2k uploads but we can figure that out at a later date. And on the bypasses and stuff, thats a good thing. (muting literally all audios is a bad idea though cant change my mind on that)

I donā€™t understand how many free audios people get. Random people who donā€™t even develop or have any active games gets 2,000 audios, yet development studios that could use the 2,000 only get 100? This makes no sense at all.
Iā€™d wish for some transparency on how you guys are even assigning these free audios. To me this makes literally no sense at allā€¦

Thereā€™s more:
Games like Obby Creator or Tower Creator has a feature where you can put your audio there using IDs
With this, countless obbies/builds that had been made there will be silent, which makes those less exciting to experience

No, it wonā€™t. I have multiple games that will be affected by this and its terrible.

Couldnā€™t you make a simple script to fix this depending on what kind of game you have. Like a audio missing dosenā€™t destroy your entire game, but like I saw earlier, some major sound themed games will take major losses from this.

people dont get how audio is such an important part to game design

it makes things more tense, take celeste as an example
it makes scenes more emotional, reference omori
it creates memories, take minecraft

the fact that this isnt more concerning is really weird

oh yeah, remember those retro brickbattle games? remember those 2009 games that are no longer supported? what will happen to all missing memories?
[I know this is using the appeal to emotion but I dont want to consider the paragraph above as an argument]

take the thousands of examples of where it isnt even music just plain ambience (minecraft again with the caves)

its really not a good thing that audios from millions of discontinued games are just going away

This upcoming changes are the best especially for new developers but one issue is that this upcoming changes will most likely break and screw up some popular games on the platform!

I use sound regions in most of my games so, yea that sucks. If the audio is just deleting then thats not ok, but if its setting volume to 0 it would be easy to just make a script to patch it. It isnt really up for debate for me, this update still isnt good. Im not in the mood to go ahead and scrape a bunch of audios.

I own a emote game, I contribute to a popular emote game, and Iā€™m decently big within the emote community. Emote games run off audios day and night, Iā€™m affected too. I have to reupload 150 audio assets, others have to do over 900. Yet we all manage to find solutions somehow. Donā€™t take this feature as a big hit, we are all lucky enough to be told in advanced.

You realize all the audio roblox uploads is licensed to roblox, right? That means any content creator that plays your game if you use audio from the roblox account will be claimed. That can impact a lot of gamesā€¦

Unfortunately, this is confirmed to be the result of a lawsuit from the even more heartless music industry. I donā€™t think this is going to be changed, reverted, or cancelled.

Adding onto this, there are too many games to count, too many assets to count, that will be affected in engagement, and popularity by this.

As all of you know, games have soundtracks on Roblox. These soundtracks often utilize some audio made and/or uploaded by others. Not everyone has the money or time to hire a sound designer, or make their own audios, as it can be difficult and challenging to make your own music. So, that leads to the use of said arbitrary audios. Itā€™s because they are useful, engaging, and helpful tools to have.

This is my last post on this topic; I wanted to get in my 2 cents.
