Not arguing, just giving a rebudle since my words were being misinterpreted.
Let me simply my opinion in a single statement
This update is not going to be backtracked on, plus it’s our fault in the first place that Roblox had to make just a drastic decision
Some of this may be true, but it doesn’t change the fact Roblox handled this poorly and on such a short notice.
I believe if we restricted ourselves to “Positive” comments only, discussion would be bland and it may as well be the same as doing nothing. Then again, discussion doesn’t do much on Roblox considering how rarely (never) they listen to opinions and ideas.
I feel like you’re being too pessimistic about this whole situation; Roblox probably knows that everyone here loathes the audio update, especially considering multiple different threads of this topic have splintered off into different thread boards. And even then, Roblox could easily defend themselves from the lawsuit, they just don’t have a legal backbone. Roblox could definitely do something about it, but they don’t and continue to leave their developers and players in the dark. And even besides that, Roblox could just cushion the blow of this update even just by doing things like tweaking the monthly audio upload limited (Or just straight up get rid of it). But again, they seem to be leaving us in the dark at the moment so we can’t be too sure.
TL;DR: Maybe if we yell loud enough, Roblox with listen.
Yes, Roblox handled this poorly, but they can only do so much so quickly. The music industry wants no waiting for this copyright issue to be gone. If they took the time to do it better, it would’ve caused a lot more trouble with the law. They’ve already let it slide too long so they have to take action immidiately.
Also, what I mean by positive comments isn’t necessarily through feedback. Having arguments in the replies, making jokes out of the situation, ridiculing Roblox for something out of their control, and being extra dramatic is not really positivity. These replies should easily be able to contribute to the topic. Things like “Get Vectored” and other unnecessary comments do not contribute to the topic at all, and is against the DevForum rules from my knowledge.
I suppose that’s true, with 3400 posts to read I’d have to guess what you’d be referring to. Question I have is though, what have they doing in the time since the lawsuit? I feel as the actions they’ve done today are too rushed to be two years worth of work, that and the fact they haven’t really done anything else about the issue over the years meaning they definitely didn’t plan this for more than a month.
Is Roblox taking us seriously? Or are they just doing the bare minimum (as always).
Wouldn’t this make roblox lose more money then getting sued by record labels because devs wont be able to get audios from there hired music artists since u cant get audio made by other users and that all games on roblox will just have no sound and eventually roblox player base will get bored and quit… I can definatly see a mass developer exodus from roblox if this happens… not a good sign even tho roblox could just improve there moderation… I mean not even youtube has this kind of problem they have false copyright but there bot can properly detect copyright music before its uploaded to the platform… Something roblox should consider… Also kind of ripping off thousands of children of money since Roblox made audio gamepasses useless imagine if a lawsuit comes out of that… that would be ironic…
They’re probably doing the bare minimum to stay afloat, which now isn’t going to be enough if this change actually goes through. Theoretically, they could also do this:
Do everything they said they’d do above.
After however long it takes them to find a solution, un-private every audio that got privated by the changes.
This makes it so that all developers really have to do is close down their games and wait. There would probably still be massive backlash, but it could perhaps be mitigated by about 5% with this change.
Then again, I’m not Roblox, so who am I kidding?
Off topic: I firmly do not believe this is what John Shedletsky would approve of willingly. If he saw this, I’m sure there would be hell to pay.
Roblox is in a very tough situation. The music industry is the one rushing Roblox to push this update out. Roblox understands that people don’t like this, but they have no quick solution other than the one mentioned in this very post.
This was something I was thinking.
If Roblox could collaborate with Monstercat and all of those different music groups, would it not be out of the question for them to fork over some money over to Universal Music (Even though we all hate them) and other music groups for licenses that let folks upload copyrighted music onto the platform? If Roblox can get people and bands like Lil Nas X, Why Don’t We and Twenty One Pilots to do concert events for them, why would paying for licenses and whatnot for their music to be off the table?
I’m pretty sure licenses for famous songs from people like Lil nas x cost a lot of money and roblox doesn’t like spending lots of money, which is why they’re making this change to avoid losing more money on the lawsuit.
I think major changes to assets on Roblox are not only needed but long overdue. Sadly, major changes to how assets work are bound to break how things used to be.
Personally I think that this is a great time to improve other metadata associated with specific asset types like audio to help transition this hard break for a lot of people. For example - there is currently no good way of finding music that loops, which is very important in game design. The number of times the free music from Roblox partners has sounded great until a fade-out ending is extreamly dissapointing and basically what made me give up on using the catalog. Discoverability via important metadata tags is basically required in this day and age.
I look forward to a future where creators can share their assets for use by a user, group, or experience as well as sell rights directly through the marketplace on a basis of per user, group, or experience. Seeing this extend to all sorts of assets such as animations, scripts, images, and more is very exciting for the future of Roblox as a platform.
I look forward to seeing how Roblox handles continued efforts in being a modern powerhouse for development on a wide spectrum from beginers to experts.
Adding to my last post, roblox could have a chance of winning the case. In one of them repliers here, they sent an imagine of one of the claims made by the music department thing, that others now call roblox a “”music game””… That review was made by a 5-9 year old! Also, they were probably talking about Ro-Beats or something! Couldn’t Roblox just say that the reviewer was talking about one of their rythm games or something? I bet that if roblox actually tries fighting and not being a 8 year old kid who can’t stand up to problems, they might have a chance of winning, as most lawsuits now are just plain stupid. So roblox, I still have faith in you guys if you back up your reasons with true evidence. I hope for the privated audios to be a temporary feature, and not a feature that would stay on roblox forever, as I make games that use free audio, and making audio by yourself isn’t as easy as making your own animations : /
I read an article talking about the settlement agreement and how the sentiment was that the record labels are hoping to work with Roblox, it is possible that this will open the door to including mainstream music. I’m not sure how it would work, but the record companies want in on ‘the metaverse’, so who knows maybe in a year the library will be full of Universal Music’s artists. (they’d have to figure out a way to contain the tracks into certain games or maybe even have players buying tracks with some sort of usage rights) You never know.
