[Action Needed] Upcoming Changes to Asset Privacy for Audio

Please, for the love of God, don’t follow thru with this.

The audio uploads for free part is OK, but maybe once the quota is reached, start reverting to the older “pay to upload” system?

The main issue is the auto-privating.

I have a collection of audios that I utilize with ID boomboxes, most of the owners of those audios probably haven’t logged on in 5 years.

Players and developers alike will be very, VERY angry at these changes, not being able to play their music. The audio library from the likes of APM may be a good source of royalty-free music, but is SEVERELY lacking in the sound effects department. In addition, there’s no tags system, so even if we wanted to search for sound effects, we would have to just scrub through hundreds of useless musics called “Light Rain” when we want a light rain sound effect.

Developers who may have gone inactive, or maybe even passed away may no longer update their games, essentially muting all music.

Besides, how would a public audio, which the uploader SAW A NOTICE THAT THIS WILL BE FREE TO USE, somehow be angry that people are using their audio?

Plus, before you say that “well, they can just make it public again,” please note that a lot of these audio uploaders may be inactive, deceased, etc, and won’t be around to re-publicify the audios which they agreed to make public.

It’s as if millions of games cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced…

Not to be disrespectful, but games live and die, they all run their course. Yes it’s nice for a nostalgic game to have audio with meaning, but give the up-and coming games a chance to see the light of day. Old games from years ago can always be remastered or recreated, etc. In fact, I have indeed noticed quite a lot of people do not like this update at all, I agree on some but disagree with others. I believe some new sort of “I must have permission” to use this audio from the original audio uploader creator may be a good workaround, but boomboxes do get negatively impacted on this, I believe this may be good, Roblox is already providing a lot of new audio assets to us, plus people who used the boomboxes just played copyright or overly loud audios. I bet you or some, if not most have never heard someone play non-copyrighted audio before, see what I mean?

The only reason creativity thrives within the audio aspect of ROBLOX is because different people can upload new and unique audios that others may be inspired by and use them in their game, but if you take this away then you’ll soon see downward trends and you will destroy your very own developer community. Original ROBLOX-created audios are irritating and most of the time not what developers need - different games require different and unique sound effects something which ROBLOX can not possibly do all the time for every single game out there on the platform. We need this to stop, and we need it to stop now we cannot progress any further on games that are worki-in-progress or project collabs if all audio assets are made private and we can only rely on ROBLOX-created ones. This is only gonna push us further down the rabbit hole.

Think about it ROBLOX,

First Animations and now Sounds? AND people are talking about the possibility of this being for more assets?
I’m all for adding privacy settings but maybe don’t make it opt-out instead??

I’ve heard if you have developer permissions and uploaded assets you have to reupload them to the group to use them, why?

Sounds good for the most part, but retroactively privating old audios is a horrible idea. Also I saw a suggestion to allow users to go beyond their allotted free audios with Robux, which is a good idea. Hopefully these two things can get adjusted. Just getting my two cents out there.

Glad for the removal of the audio upload fee, not so glad for the every audio longer than 6 seconds will become private

When we turn on the new privacy settings, the audio assets in your experience will stop working if they were not uploaded by the same user or Group who created the experience.

This is terrible news! You’re not only destroying countless games but you’re disabling all developers from using any at all!

Will this destroy all music groups/games that allow users to upload their audio? Will this break games, toolbox models? Does this mean all those times where people buy music game passes? Their Robux is waisted because games no longer accept audios uploaded by “outsiders?”

the issue is there may be developers who arent active on roblox anymore or are too lazy to bother
this isnt just a bad idea, this is so broken to the point it will break EVERY single game on the platform.

This is my message to everyone. Just quit Roblox for now. Like seriously this is dumb to deal with.

Roblox really messed up so they should be taught a lesson, they need us developers for them to profit off of. We cant make anything without sound, so lets just stop for now until the change it!

I can see why they are doing this, it’s because of copyright and how ruthless music companies tend to be with stuff like this, but this is such a depressing thing to see, this could change Roblox drastically and not in a very good way.

I hope that the people involved are working on a better solution because this just wont fly with many people.

Good to see that people are still protesting about this! Continue to fight devs! We can’t let roblox win this one!!

One last little reply since I’ve been writing about how utterly mind boggling this change is all day.

Roblox. Please. For the love of god. Live and let live. The platform has been in such a great area lately with the insane advancements in studio technology and amazing release of 3D clothing. However, every single time the platform is in a stable position like this the Roblox team will consistently, even though I’m grateful for their effort, come up with a ridiculous and completely unnecessary change like this with platform-wide consequences and expect developers to do hundreds of hours of work to compensate for changes made at random and with little justification.

This might seem stereotypical of the community to say, but please stop trying to fix what isn’t broken. Despite my harsh words as of late I do see this platform as an incredible place to make games and I would really like it to stay that way. I don’t understand how changes like this, the animation blending update, and original vision for the materials update keep being presented with little regard for developers or generally a logical vision of what the platform should be or has been.

If you put your work onto the Toolbox and your mad because people are benefitting off your PUBLIC work, then I don’t know what to say.

I considered this possibility too, but I’m not sure if that is really the motive for such a change with rather short notice. If that is the case, I suppose this was the only thing they were able to come up with; although I don’t understand why they wouldn’t be transparent about it.

Not to be disrespectful, but this is honestly one of the most ridiculous posts I’ve seen about this so far. Profit earnings and audio privacy have almost no direct correlation, at least for a builder. If anything Roblox is trying to help us while trying to keep as much as the past kept as well. I feel this is a good “in the middle” type compromise to all of this.

not really. this will break classic games, games from retired or passed away devs, games that no longer get updated, etc etc.
this isnt just a small thing.
this will ruin roblox games all over the platform.

I’d like to point out to people hating on this update that Roblox might be trying to avoid another lawsuit like the previous one. I swear, every time Roblox has an update, it’s an outrage, and nobody even bothers to think for one millisecond about why Roblox might have done it.

Ya no, this is gonna end badly, I can tell.

There are a lot of ubiquitous assets on Roblox that are used commonly on Roblox, audios that have been around since audios were first made available. Not all those uploaders are around or are gonna want to come back just to make their audios public again if they allow you to release audios after. This is a HUGE oversight by Roblox even worse than some of their recent changes.

I believe it’s based on premium level and if your age is verified with an ID.
