A terrible update, this literally breaks 90% of games that relies on outside audio. Now we can’t get stuff like old roblox audio, sfxs and more. Even scratch doesn’t do this. You’ve hit a low.
Edit: I understand audio under 6 seconds won’t be private, but some sfxs are longer than that, especially “reloading” sounds.
no like remixing it maybe changing pitch ?
Although I can understand the integrity of this decision, I feel like this will ruin the preservation of old, or outdated games that are memorable by old players. There are many games that are no longer/scarcely updated that will be heavily affected by this. This also nearly completely ruins the whole point of any radio item in any game.
I recommend that this is instead made an option that you can enable yourself on whether your audio can be used. Just make a short little toggle feature when editing/uploading an audio file that allows you to make it so games that aren’t owned by your account can use your audio. Otherwise, this is a very niche change that will ruin the condition of old and anew games. Not everyone can make their own sound effects.
As much as I understand why this change is being done, it’s sad to see all the older audio from users who are no longer on the platform to make their audio public will essentially vanish off the platform. It’s great that we can upload audio for free but there’s a lot of things that this update messes as well. Myself along with a group of developers share audio across our projects and now this essentially forces us to reupload those audios onto individual places/groups each time we want to use them which just messes up with our “free audio upload limit” especially for those who refuse to verify their ID. There are probably legal reasons behind this but I wish Roblox consulted this more with devs that will be most affected by this.
I face a similar issue. I’ve been working on my game for over 7 months now, polishing it as much as I can and making it work with the latest updates. This update does not help whatsoever.
Yes, that’s bypassing moderation and breaking the law.
I’m a fan of all this other than the part where SFX over 6 seconds are automatically privatized. This is going to ruin so many experiences and you know it.
What baffles me is we typically get months and sometimes even years worth of notice and time to adjust before a less important update is introduced. However for an update that will essentially break the entire catalog of audios we are given two weeks notice. I guarantee most of the front page games will be drained of their audios.
While I do agree this is a good move on copyright and for game studios, how about the major demographic of Roblox developers who are teenagers; the demographic this platform has had for the longest time? It is painstaking enough to spend hours searching through the Library as it is to perhaps find a few free sound effects, not worrying about paying tens of thousands monthly for designers (especially for younger developers who do not have the money). Developers have major updates to release and no time to deal with this. If we are pushing towards this update then make the notice longer than two weeks because two weeks is catastrophic.
Make the notice longer than two weeks and promise a more viable way to find free audio, especially for a demographic of teenage developers who may already have their hands full with just regular developing.
Audio transference is a problem too, you make a model and you want to put it in multiple games under a group/universe/genre owned by you and your friends. You have to go through the trouble of having all of them upload the same audio then edit the ID under multiple places, a major inconvenience for something so miniscule.
I hate to sound jealous, but why do some people get 2000 audios per month and I got 10 audios per month. And if there’s a clear system on how audios budgets are given it should be clearly documented.
The licensed music is literal dog anyways. A bot literally just uploads 80,000 audios per minute. I searched for music from the Roblox licensed audio for my game’s intro music. Found nothing good, ended up going with an audio that will now be privated.
As someone who’s had a lot of their SFX/music used without permission, I’m very in favor of this change!
I think this has something to do with your premium subscription level, since I have a friend with the middle one who has 1000 uploads a month, I have the cheapest one which gives me 100 a month.
Yeah that’s really painful right there ! It’s going to destroy most games in general.
Yet another hit and miss for Roblox.
- Restricting privacy access to all previously uploaded audio content regardless if that’s what the original uploader wants
- Limited timeframe to “get with the times” and replace everything
- Breaks older games that are not necessarily managed anymore that use publically available audio assets
- Royalty free music is NOT fit for purpose, at all.
Keep all previously uploaded audio public and allow uploaders to decidie their own individual privacy rule per upload/batch.
EDIT: Clarified for projects that are not actively managed anymore (and grammar/spelling corrections)
ok it means moderation has to work harder/get more (also better) moderators
but it also means free audio
come on i’ve been waiting so long and i have stuff i really want to upload.
My entire hangout game (which is unmonetized and private) relied on the audio catalog to make our times together enjoyable. They’re some of my fondest memories. I cannot believe we’re getting thrown under the bus like this. People don’t listen to the royalty-free music because it sucks, simple as that. I can’t name a single Roblox track I’ve listened to since they started making them.
We have been given less than two weeks to account for a breaking change that affects every game made since audio was introduced. And it is being iced over with free audio.
Bravo.
Oh, and I am really going to miss boomboxes. Those are iconic. I really despise the lack of transparency given for this update, that this was thrown upon us without as much as a deprecation period, nor a sliver of backward compatibility.
Roblox’s efforts to avoid breaking games with their updates are really not showing.
A few months ago, I made a wish for public animations. My wish must have got warped somehow, because I received private audio instead.
Going off of a bit of rant here:
Roblox keeps adding new features and breaking old games
And Roblox EXPECTS US to keep on updating them
I really think they should remove where every single audio will be private
I would honesty undo the update
just use an alternate account
please dont private the 6 or longer seconds audios, there’s too many sfx and audio packs i use. this would severly impact my current game development, having me to go back and modify every single audio sfx in my game.
