These replies are so incredibly pathetic, I’m disappointed but hardly surprised. The devforum isn’t a place to argue back and forth about your own personal opinions. Take that elsewhere.
I don’t think something like this should be on the platform, but I am a bit conflicted about it.
Sure, pronouns are a part of daily life, and yes, some people do not go by the pronouns you would assume they would. And yes, you can misgender or misidentify them, but it is what it is. If it’s really that much of a problem, just tell them what you want to be identified as!
I think a social platform that is directed towards children shouldn’t have these identifying factors. There is already tolerance towards LGBTQ+ content on Roblox, which relates to sexuality and really shouldn’t be exposed to children. I would put this in the same category, though maybe it’s a bit more appropriate for children.
Identity is a large part of social websites and games, and this could help with that. But I’ve always considered Roblox to be a virtual identity that isn’t connected to who you really are, so I think avoiding these more personal aspects would help keep it that way. That’s also why we have links to social media on profiles.
As for games that use a system where it assigns you a character, that should be determined by the player not by you accessing their data and assuming they want to be something anything else is just bad design.
I have a lot of thoughts on these types of features, as I’m all for customization and personalization to a certain extent. However, when it starts delving into interpersonal areas like sexuality and self-identification, I don’t think it has a place on Roblox.
Hi! I personally will not use this feature if implemented, but if implemented I would like to see it as how Discord has implemented it with one minor change.
Essentially, Discord has a “pronouns” feature where you can input anything into the small space. I’d suggest Roblox create something like this - calling it status instead - where users can type anything capped to 25 characters in it. This status should also appear in the leaderboard when a player is pressed but not in the player menu. I’d like to also see more ways of opening that leaderboard player section, such as through the chat so the status is more accessible.
The 25 character limit will allow people to quickly express their emotions in a short sentence or say something like “she/her - tired” if they want to use the status to express pronouns.
I support whatever people think they are. But this is a reach, this is just Roblox, a video game… You got your real life problems and freedoms to be worried about. I agree with the comments saying this is political. You are focusing more on putting time into making photoshopped images cause you can’t accept that people won’t care about this bio if it was implemented, they will still bug you with the WRONG pronouns either way, cause its a video game, there are no consequences in misgendering you. You will have to deal with it, it’s life… Otherwise you will have to portray avatar according to how you want to be portrayed… In life there are some factors you can’t blame others but yourself, and appearances is one example that cannot be changed.
But then again Roblox will probably add it to please stockholders in the community. So I won’t pay anymore attention other than this comment.
Once again as a reminder, I support your community or whatever you’re in, but you gotta at least try to have the ability to cope for how things are, not everyone is trying to attack you guys by misgendering you. But you don’t make it easy for us to figure you out anyways.
(Also adding bios and labels in the pause screen doesn’t do anything as nobody will view all that in a game lol. Which literally makes this post useless.)
If this post is mostly about respect, have better alternatives of being able to be accepted or respected. The way is not needing others’ approval. If it’s about trying to fit in, try not to stand out. (As you know that the most annoying people are the loudest ones in the room generally. Just smile and wave and people will accept you for who you are, plain and simple.)
(This shall not get me cancelled or be reported for bullying as it has constructive criticism and I in no way have disrespected the community in such way. I am giving suggestions for OP to live a happier life and anyone else with these struggles.)
Adding the pronouns field will not help people in avoiding misgendering you, it does the opposite, they WILL do it on purpose. Have you seen how toxic roblox players are? This is a horrible approach to this problem, instead, normalize calling people by their names instead of their pronouns.
This seems rather unnecessary when you realize you can just add it to your bio (which you expect people to read anyway upon clicking ones profile).
This, this is a good point here. I have seen how toxic this platform can get and its quite wild.
Nah. There is no point in adding pronouns or anything related to the whole lgbtq identity stuff. I don’t mean to be mean but like no one really cares about someone’s identity. I’m not sure why in this day and age it’s so important to know various random and meaningless identity details of strangers you at most maybe talk to for like 3 minutes once in your lifetime.
This should be something in the control of the developers. Not something baked into the whole platform. Last thing i would want is more bloat added to the client for the sake of adhering to someones pronouns.
No, we don’t need to be adding pronouns to Roblox. Think about it, do you really need someone to address you by your preferred pronouns in the heat of an intense boss battle? Perhaps i’d be fine if it just included the bare minimum (i.e., he/him, she/her, they/them, all pronouns), but even then, putting that information out there could definitely result in a rise of gender based attacks on this platform.
Now that I think about it, as a society, we should abandon gendered pronouns altogether and just start referring to each other as it/its. Much simpler!
On a more serious note, if it’s that much of a problem for you, then put your pronouns in your bio. A dedicated space for pronouns is unnecessary and provides yet another thing the Roblox staff have to moderate if people can freely put in whatever they want there.
I genuinely think instead of just senselessly releasing pronouns onto every area a user’s name is displayed, the about section of profiles should get it’s much deserved glowup, and allow users to view it through a mini-profile in-game, which would do much nicer.
with added hypothetical features such as:
- Larger Character Limit
- Bold, Italics, Lists, Sizing, etc. Enabled
- Many Year-Old Censored Symbols Un-Censored Which Could Be Used For Text Decoration.
I believe you may be more interested in this instead, as you would be able to make your pronouns as big as you want and have it displayed on a mini-profile.
How is it too hard? You have your avatar, displayname/username, about me, and many other features.
I’m confused. It would improve your development experience, how? Having pronouns won’t improve the development experience because nobody can see you in studio and there’s not really a “chat” thing, (there is but not like really a chat).
I disagree with that.
Okay? That’s cool for them, they do that. But I will still refer to them the way their avatar/username shows because it’s too confusing to remember.
What if a <13 user got a parent’s permission to have the chat access, and they can’t see pronouns and misrefer to you?
This stuff is already a hot-button issue IRL, especially in the English speaking world, so already putting “pronouns in your bio” already is taking a political stance and I am absolutely certain that if Roblox implements something like this it will get another spotlight on it that will attract a lot of bad press, as if Roblox is already dealing with enough problems already.
Anyone saying this stuff isn’t political, I’ve seen a few posts but won’t single anyone out, are either wrong or lying. They are immediate identifier on a current political stance.
As far back as I can remember, discussions about gender is just something you just don’t do, especially not when most of the user base is geared toward kids. Its weird.
Too add, already Companies that have implemented the pronoun thing in work emails and such are starting to reel those policies back because of the massive amounts of backlash they’ve received.
Pronouns are something the median average person doesn’t want to see.
That’s all I have to say on the topic without even getting into my own opinions on the matter, which I really don’t want to do.
Now, let’s talk about the one problem about pronouns themselves, the Language portion.
These are specifically 3rd person pronouns, words used in place of someone’s name when used in conversation when that person is not in the room.
This is why people say they’re unnecessary. You don’t use them when you’re talking to the person. You use “you, you’re”, 2nd person pronouns, or the person’s name, a proper noun.
Unlike some of the replies I don’t think this is taking a political stance, but even as a trans woman I believe this is unneeded and unwanted.
Users that want to show their pronouns may do so in their “about me”, there is no need for a dedicated feature since at that point it’s just bloat.
if remembering simple pronouns is “too confusing” for you, then you shouldn’t even expect to communicate respectfully with others.
if you’re speaking from personal difficulty, that’s alright, but let’s not generalize it as a universal truth.
misgendering will happen less if this becomes a norm. that said, we also have to consider the fact that there are possible exploitations for these, so roblox should just bring back “My Feed” feature, or expand the customizability of the “About me” feature.
Sounds good on paper until you realise that this is just bait for bullying and harassment. Literally a platform for kids, many of which are about the age where being evil = funny (saying slurs being a popular staple for that)
For social games, I think there is a lot of merit in being able to query someone’s pronouns from their profile.
It might not pose much value to some people, but for others, it’s something that is very nice to have. There are more (objective) positives to this feature than there are negative ones (of which, I cannot really think of any).
Roblox is ultimately a platform that building itself up as a social juggernaut, and this is another natural step to that goal. User expression and freedom is the goal here, is it not?
It’s disheartening that a lot of people are taking to straw man arguments or making this about politics (when it really isn’t).
HELL No. No thank you. I don’t like it. About me can have pronouns and contain user description, no need to add extra text.
Most of the replies on this thread are negative. People have expressed their opinions, just deal with it. This is not needed and unnecessary and it’s just gonna force Roblox to take a political path when nobody truly wants to see this.
Let’s keep Roblox the way it is. Thank you so much.
(Some people seem to have been targeting many of my posts and replies and mass flagging them falsely. Some ended up being taken down, some didn’t. If you want to play like this I can play like this too, just so you know.)
This 24-hour slowmode makes having any meaningful public conversation on this topic almost impossible.
This is an opinion and you do not have to agree with it.
As I’ve stated before, this would probably be a waste of the engineers’s time. First of all, I’m gonna ignore all the website stuff and focus on what would happen if it were to be added in-game.
Almost nobody would open their Roblox (ESC)/Leaderboard (TAB) menu to find your name and view this, and this is especially the case for mobile players. They would rather just say it based on how your avatar looks and be corrected.
(which, a lot of people seem to agree with me on this, not viewing pronouns of someone I’m gonna talk to for 3 minutes and leave)
That being said, for this to be effective for the general Roblox player it would have to be right in their face. The easiest way to do this is to have it appear right above their head, to the dismay of most players who fall under these categories:
- Don’t care about information relating to pronouns.
- Like having space on screen.
Also, this can lead to an increase in bullying and have NEGATIVE effects, possibly even more than the positives.
Not listing anything very extreme, but it’s more than just a possibility if this were to be added, and the same reason the gender you choose is not displayed publically. (and is… now optional, which I do not remember it being, but it’s good for privacy if you really care enough to remove it)
funny (not (all) stupid) stuff i read
Minority GENDER? Not sexuality? I’m starting to think the people saying this was political aren’t crazy. Please elaborate on what minority means in this scenario.
First of all, it’s WAYYY better to let players select this for themselves in your game.
Second of all, wouldn’t it just be better to make a feature request to expose the now optional gender feature players can select and change at any time to developers?
Umm… No.
- If this happens to me I’m quitting your game.
- Just make it like booga booga and show what the items look like.
- Automatic translation
- As many people said before, if they can’t even handle a selection screen how would they manage to play your game, and how would they view your pronouns through the ESC menu.
Already said something about this before.
I’m not calling someone with the username xxkilxlaperi0da1 that. I’m pretty sure that is the reason we have pronouns in the first place, they are shorter ways to describe a noun, and that’s also why most range from 2-3 letters. How about instead, we normalize calling everyone it/its!1!!
I believe this will be abused and cause more problems for moderation. It’s essentially the same thing as joining a roleplay game and putting bla bla/sick/dragon/dont touch tail. Something like this is already in Meepcity, and look how that turned out.
This should not be editable by players, if implemented, unless it’s an extension of the about me already on the website, which, can still be abused but it’s already here and not going anywhere
Respectfully, what are you even talking about
I get what he means, although he does word things a little poorly. I’m not joining a server and checking the pronouns of everyone I talk to if I’m only gonna meet them for like 5 minutes and never see them again. I’m just going to call you what it looks like from your avatar, and you can correct me on that if you care enough.
The Solution?
(there is basically none)
Like DFG said above, a way to view the already existing profile system in-game instead of just on the website. This would allow for this feature AND much more unrelated things, such as better reporting systems or stylizing!
Not to mention, if there was an API that could identify people by pronouns, I know for a fact there would be games that would just outright ban entire groups of people. Particularly in the milsim and ro-nation genres.
I strongly disagree, you have to open your mind and think that Roblox is a global platform, and not everyone is going to love this feature and it will cause a major issue to Roblox.
This suggestion will come with a huge consequence, if there was an API that could identify users pronouns (just like the person said above), developer can use that API to purposely discriminate users from the game.
