Allow us to dock more than 3 widgets in each docking area

With the current widget docking system in Studio, we can’t dock more than 3 widgets per docking area. As a Roblox developer, this restriction makes it harder to utilize screen space effectively, especially on higher resolution screens. My resolution is 3840x2160.

As you can see, I’m attempting to dock the Asset Manager up top, between my Explorer and Reclass widgets, but I’m restricted even though there should be plenty of space for it to fit.

There is no desired workaround to this currently, as docking it to the right would cause me to lose precious viewport space (approx. 400 pixels horizontally), and putting it in the same slot with Reclass would cause more friction when I decide to quickly change an instance’s class.

If this was solved, this would improve my experience by maximizing as much real estate as I have, while keeping it on screen.

Wanted to add an additional example. A graphics editor I use, Affinity Photo, lets you dock up to 5 widgets on the right hand side (and even more?). Roblox Studio, on the other hand, currently only allows for 3 widgets in the same area.

I don’t see why this feature would be implemented. You already have lots of essential docking areas, and all this would do is cause scaling issues.

If Roblox did decide to implement this, I would think they would do a tab selector. You can already merge widgets together.

IIRC, an admin who works on the revamped studio docking stated they’d like to find a way to remove the minimum size restriction for widgets, as it kind of doesn’t make sense to clamp it. If you make it too small, you might not be able to easily access everything, and that’s it.

Not exactly what I remember, but this was a bug report for a change that might’ve been made recently:

I’d hope that a restriction like this wouldn’t cause this feature request to completely be out of question. The more freedom we get with customizing our layout and increasing productivity without hiding things behind tabs or cutting back viewport space, I think it’s better. Might as well take advantage of higher resolution screens.

Yes, if Roblox would implement this feature, they would probably have to fix this or increase minimal restrictions on widget sizes. Plugin creators would probably have to adjust their plugins accordingly, which would also be bad for discontinued plugins.

Lots of creators would appreciate a layout change to widgets, as they can be very buggy right now. Before they do implement anything, I suggest they fix those bug(s).

As computers advance in higher revolutions, Roblox will probably take notes, and do something about widgets.

We will likely be building a new docking system based on the Next Gen Studio frameworks and Lua UI. This will give us full control over the behaviors and the ability to provide an actual modern docking management system,. No ETA but it’s possible it could happen later this year.

Hi, could you give an example of what a modern docking managment system could be like?

VSCode is a good example, in my opinion!

But i have to ask, what exactly happened to the previous docking update? So far what we have now is well, a very cut down version of what we were originally promised. I do know the docking update was insanely broken (i sure did love having my viewport appear behind studio!) so im wondering if theres some more specific reason as to why this was the case. Were the issues so bad that it was just better to cut down the entire system?
