In some cases when inserting an Atmosphere instance into Studio, it will not use the current skybox and will use a previous skybox instead. If you try multiple different skyboxes in that session of Studio, often Atmosphere will use a different skybox than the one that currently exists in Lighting.
If you update the Sky by toggling CelestialBodiesShown for example, everything updates and visually seems to be correct again.
I can reproduce this consistently by inserting an Atmosphere into Lighting in this place with a freshly opened Studio session: Atmosphere skybox.rbxl (18.2 KB). This can also be reproduced in-game via the console, outside of Studio.
My GPU is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070.
It looks like Atmosphere is using skybox textures left over in memory instead of the correct ones. I opened a new baseplate in an old instance of Studio that I had previously been working in, inserted a random Sky I found in the toolbox, and then inserted an Atmosphere. Instead of the default Sky or the Sky I had inserted being used for the Atmosphere, it used a Sky that had existed only in the last project I had open; one that had never been inserted into this new place.
Tweaking Atmosphere properties and trying different Skies feels unreliable due to this issue; I cannot be sure if the visual results are correct and are what will actually be seen ingame. This makes working with Atmosphere extremely unpleasant.
I cannot believe this thread exists - I think I just ran into this exact issue, 4 years later.
In Swordburst 3, our main menu uses a “Nebula” skybox. We then teleport you into a bright, sunny world.
On rare cases - you will see the Nebula skybox upon loading into the bright world. This world does not have the nebula skybox anywhere in the place. It is still cached from the main menu, prior to the teleport.
That is very interesting. I did real quick go in your game check test it by going from the Void Tower to Floor 1, and back.
When I joined Floor 1 for a solid 7 seconds the skybox was using Nebula (To be fair, I haven’t joined SwordBurst 3 In the past 5 days. So it probably took longer then usual.)
The whole game was loaded in during the first 3 seconds, but the skybox still didnt load in until 4 seconds later hmm.
^ This was taken about 2 seconds in, the textures and materials on the left did manage to load in for a solid amount of time before the actual skybox came back.
When I rejoined Void Tower, for 0.5 seconds or so the skybox was the skybox from floor 1.
Very interesting information! Thanks for the insight about the skybox still being cached!
