[Beta] Improvements to the Studio Camera Controls Beta

Hey Creators,

Last year, we introduced the Studio Camera Controls beta, which added features like adjustable camera speed via scroll wheel modifiers and smoother interpolation when using F to focus. Thanks to your feedback—especially around how these changes impacted key editing workflows—we made quick updates to address your issues.

We’re excited to share updates to the Studio Camera Controls beta, including new options and controls that improve editing workflows and add even more flexibility. We hope you give these changes a shot – we want to make sure we get it right.

How to change Camera Speed

While this isn’t a change from the beta, we wanted to give you a quick reminder: under Studio settings, you can choose either RMB or Alt as the keyboard modifier that, when combined with scroll wheel, allows you to change your camera speed on the fly. You can also change this setting to “None”, which disables the keyboard shortcut to change speed on the fly. With “None” set, you can still directly edit the speed by clicking on the slider.

Now let’s jump into what’s new!

:lock: “Lock” button

We’ve added a “Lock” button next to the camera speed slider – when enabled, no matter what your shortcut is, scrolling will not change the speed and will zoom in/out instead. This means that even with the shortcut enabled, there is always a path to quickly revert back to legacy scroll wheel behavior.

This video shows how you can quickly increase/decrease speed to change your editing scale, and use the lock to recover legacy scroll behavior.

:movie_camera: New modes of camera movement

We’re also now providing more options for rotate and pan functionality. We’ll get into specifics below, but at a high level, here’s what various keys do when combined with Right Mouse Button (RMB), Middle Mouse Button (MMB), and Scroll:

  • Shift: Move slower for fine-tuned precision. This is an extension of the existing camera shift speed
  • Ctrl: Move the camera relative to the point under your cursor
  • Alt: Move the camera across a plane

Here’s a chart on how these modifiers can be combined with mouse actions for unique camera behavior:

Key Description RMB MMB Scroll
Shift Move slower for fine-tuned precision Slow camera orbit Slow Pan Slow zoom
Ctrl Move the camera relative to the point under cursor Orbit around point under cursor Pan relative to point under cursor Zoom towards point under cursor
Alt Move the camera across a plane Pan along local y-plane Pan along global y-plane Change camera speed [if enabled in Studio settings]

Note that MMB generally applies to just mouses, but RMB works through secondary click on trackpads!

Shift: Move slower for fine-tuned precision

Ctrl: Move the camera relative to the point under your cursor

Alt: Move the camera across across a plane

How do I enable the beta?

Navigate to File > Beta Features and enable the “New Studio Camera Controls” beta. If you tried the beta when it was released a few years ago, you may still have it on!

What’s next

We have some additional improvements in the works, like decoupling the camera speed slider from the view selector and improving the slider’s interaction mechanics (like being able to click and type in a speed). Stay tuned!

Please leave your feedback in the comments below! If you’ve tried the beta in the past, we’d appreciate checking out the new changes to see if they fit your workflow better. We plan to address your feedback and ensure we’re not breaking workflows before we make this the default behavior for the camera and take it out of beta.

Special thanks to @CaiusCosades0 for their work on this feature!

Looking very nice so far! As long as the new stuff with shift controls doesn’t override my shift speed setting (I use shift to move very fast to go far distances), I’ll be looking forward to these improvements.

Is this not the current behaviour? And will these modifiers be able to be set as the default behaviour and disabled entirely?

Being able to lock the speed slider is a small but sweet feature, thank you!!

Can we have the ability to disable the interpolation for the zoom to part thing, I feel like this could cause motion sickness in some people.

Thanks for the feedback! Shift speed should stay the same but let us know if you have issues.

You can disable it in settings.

You can disable this currently in File > Studio Settings, under “Zoom To - Tween Transition”

These are great features! Although I’m looking forward to seeing a potential for Orthographic view for studio camera as this would be extremely helpful while selecting parts in a line.

I can’t seem to find what’s wrong with the current camera controls, never thought I needed any more controls then I already had,

And when using the beta previously I turned it off because of how uncomfortable of a change it was, I hope this time it’s different.

This is what some of the more recent improvements, like the “Lock” button, were aimed at doing: making sure the new functionality doesn’t feel uncomfortable for creators. Would love for you to try it again!

So good! Very good! Also being able to easily revert to legacy is a nice touch!

These are those small but very helpful features, I hope Roblox continues implementing them as it really helps!

Any plans for trackpad improvements for studio camera control? It’s torture without a mouse
