Notoriety: What is it?

Notoriety is a negative penalty that is automatically awarded to players for various actions. In general, notoriety is seen as a negative trait, although simply having notoriety does not equate to being ‘wanted’ or a criminal. Notoriety will always fall between 0 and 3, with 3 being the most notorious a person can be.

When Notoriety is Awarded

When you kill another player

  • Royal Army is exempt from this (unless it is a team kill)
  • Multi-kills generate additional notoriety

When completing bounties as a Bounty Hunter

  • Bounty Hunters receive less notoriety than for a regular kill
  • As Bounty Hunters increase in stage, they earn less notoriety
  • Bounty Hunters are capped out so that they don’t gain notoriety beyond a certain point (as long as they are completing bounties - random kills are not subject to this)

Thieves detected when stealing

  • If you are pickpocketed, you can get your money back and expose the thief by attacking them or by saying any of the following
    • Guards
    • Help
    • Hey
    • Thief

When Notoriety Decreases

Automatically Over Time

Notoriety decreases automatically. Your notoriety will reduce by 0.5 every five minutes.

When Killed by the Royal Army

Your notoriety will decrease when you are killed by Royal Army soldiers

Detecting Notorious Players

You can visualize the notoriety of other players by using ‘Focus’ (default hotkey is F). ‘Focus’ will cause particles to appear within the player and is equivalent to ‘recognizing’ a notorious figure. The more notorious and recognizable they are, the more dramatic the particle effect.

Notoriety Barriers (for Teams and Factions)

Some teams have notoriety barriers in place. These are display in the Team Selection Menu, and players who exceed the listed notoriety are not able to join the team or faction until their notoriety decreases.

Notoriety values are subject to change. Please feel free to give feedback on how the current system is balanced
