Builtin and installed plugins failed to load if special character in install path

Description of the problem:
Usually, when I open up Roblox Studio, I find everything working correctly, with no errors in the output window, however a few hours ago, I noticed a lof of errors showing up in the output window, and found, that a lot of Roblox Studio features, doesn’t work for me.

Every time I open up Roblox Studio, my output window is filled with errors. Of what I can see, they’re all either in the destination of BuiltInPlugins, BuiltInStandalonePlugins or InstalledPlugins.
These errors cause multiple features in Roblox Studio to not work.

List of a few major things, that doesn’t work:

  • Every now and then buttons that should work turn gray (Toolbox, Game Settings etc.)
  • Toolbox, Game Settings, Manage Plugins and many other buttons don’t work. I click them, and nothing happens - not even a window appears.
  • All of my Plugins are gone.

A video demonstration of the problem here.

An error like this is printed for every BuiltInPlugin / InstalledPlugin / BuiltInStandalonePlugins:

22:24:13.030 - Error while trying to open plugin file: C:/Users/Simon J…[redacted]/AppData/Local/Roblox/Versions/version-fa08ae3c047e448c/BuiltInStandalonePlugins/CollisionGroupsEditor.rbxm

It looks like this might be caused by the special character in my name in the file path?

Since I live in Denmark, we use special characters such as æ,ø & å. These are often used in our names too, and therefore my last name, has an ø in it.

I have seen the “ø” in my last name being changed to “?” by Roblox Studio before, but it usually seems to work with no errors.

Update on my problem
After having tried almost everything to solve this problem, including:

  • Uninstalling and Reinstalling both Roblox and Roblox Studio.
  • Logging into other accounts to test, if it would work there.
  • Rebooting my pc multiple times.
  • Resetting internet connections in Internet Explorer.

Nothing worked.
Then I tried Running Roblox Studio as Administrator, and it solved half of the problem for me.
I can now click all the buttons, and use almost every feature.
The only missing things, are all the plugins that I had installed onto Roblox Studio.
If I find a fix for the Installed Plugins aswell, I will delete this, make a post and mark it as the solution.

Every time I am trying to install/use a plugin I get this error message.

14:53:55.135 - Error while trying to open plugin file: C:/Users/Romn [redacted]/AppData/Local/Roblox/5865352/InstalledPlugins/144950355/5815448764/Plugin.rbxm

It happens with every plugin, I already reinstalled Roblox and the plugins twice and deleted the roblox folder that is inside AppData (Including restarting my PC after that), The plugins used to work 2 days ago but now I can’t manage to do anything.

This occurs on my PC with the Windows 10 OS, I never had this issue before and I haven’t changed any configuration value or updated my PC. Literally I was using Roblox Studio normally the day before yesterday, closed it, then opened again the next day and there I started to experience this issue.

Hello, this bug seems to be a verification bug, and it fails to load my Toolbox and my plugins, this has happened to me before, but it was only the toolbox, it fails to load my my name, it sets my name as ‘Joo F’ even tho it is ‘Joao F’ as if the A is an unknown character.

It happens everytime i start ROBLOX Studio, i have tried to install it again and it had the same error. It also started to happen after the latest update on my ROBLOX Studio.
It happens to all my places aswell, i believe it is an error involving my name, as it changed the A to a

This just fixed my issue, thank you so much.

Having the same problem also. I am trying to use plugins, but they are all gone. Almost nothing is working at the moment for me. I believe this is due to special character “Ä” in my Windows user.

Can confirm. Happened to me yesterday and today also.

Sadly, I am facing the same issue right now. I can’t use any plugins, neither can I simply open the game settings to invite my dev team.

Can’t use my plugins just when i need them… Also i can’t invite people to my team create.

Whenever I load up ROBLOX studio it prints out errors , the errors are showing logs of “built-in” plugins and my own plugins “installed-plugins” couldn’t load, I tried restarting my pc, deleting & downloading studio / ROBLOX again, changed accounts still no help . Tried deleting the folders in the studio files that were built-in plugins, installed plugins but still doesn’t work.

The error or bug is I can’t click on anything in studio by this i mean (Toolbar,Manage Plugins, Publish as, Game settings)

This started happening on : 2020/4/17

When I load into any studio game this is the output:

When I click “Publish as” or “Toolbar” or “Game Settings”:
It doesn’t print anything nor do anything, I click on it and nothing happens.

Studio version : version-fa08ae3c047e448c

Note when I say I can’t click it means I can click but it doesn’t do anything It’s like I didn’t even click it.

Want a tutorial on how to fix this problem? Worked for me of course it’s just changing the name of your pc’s user but the folder doesn’t change by itself, reply if you do!

I tried following the tutorial, but I have Windows 10 Home so there is no “Local Users and Group” in the Computer Management window
Now, an upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Pro costs 150 USD, which I cannot afford at this moment…

I would like a tutorial for that.

TUTORIAL TO CHANGE YOUR PC’s FOLDER NAME

:warning: DISCLAIMER:

This has potential to break certain programs, PATH entries, and user environment variables since this does not update the file path system-wide; it does the bare minimum to rename the folder without breaking Windows. In some rare cases, this method might break your user account.

IF YOU CAN’T USE METHOD 1 FEEL FREE TO CHECK OUT OTHER METHOD’S!

Method 1 :

  1. Go to Cortana search line and type ‘command’. Right click on ‘command prompt’. Choose “run as administrator”. Click “yes”.

(If you did it right in the command prompt it should say “system32” insted of a username)

  2. Type in 'net user Administrator /active:yes ‘. Press "enter’. The command completed successfully.

  3. Go to the left bottom corner of your desktop and click on windows icon. The start menu will pop up. You can see a small account icon, above the same windows icon, click on it. Choose “Sign out”.

IF IT CREATES A NEW USER FOLDER CALLED TEMP YOU’RE DOING THINGS CORRECTLY WITH METHOD 2, NOW RENAME YOUR FOLDER WITH THE NAME YOU WANT AND THEN GO REPEAT STEP 7 THEN SIGN OUT, SIGN IN. DONE.

I’m pretty sure you can just change it in your normal account management, try that  skip that step.

It is just weird that this thing has never happend and now it doesn’t want to verify usernames with “A” or “Ä” or any special character. When I type in the The command to command place thing, it doesn’t go through. I have seen videos of this thing and at The end they can’t access to their main account anymore and it creates temp account.

Yes, well my method creates a TEMP folder for your user so you can change your folder’s name otherwise it doesn’t work, I’m not sure why doesn’t it work for you!

It finally worked! I did skip that step, and I had to reboot my PC when trying to rename the folder, since I repeatedly got the error window “Cannot Rename Folder Because It Is Open In Another Program”. Thank you so much for your assistance!

After I put The commands and log out and log Back in to my default account and go to the computer management, it doesn’t show The local users and groups thing and If I skip that step, it doesn’t show “Windows NT”, mayby you know why this is so?

Hm you could try making a temp / new user account and then do all of this on the temp account , the problem that people are having that can’t change the name of the folder is due to being on the same account you wanna do it on which is not possible because windows is running in that folder, try to make a new account and do the things on the temp/new account for your main.
