I’d prefer to have the “Popular Near You” category a bit lower, the “Featured” at second, and “Popular” at the top. “Top Rated” is alright at third.
Boy were you wrong about the “Popular Near You” sort. It’s the exact same as the Popular sort here in a smaller country as well, with a few differences after 3 or 4 clicks.
Why this change seems to be somewhat useful for newer games to become more popular, it seems to have lost a large value to sponsoring a game. Now I made the mistake of sponsoring right before the change had happened. I wasn’t warned or anything which was a little upsetting to spend money on something that didn’t really do much for the game.
This change will also bring a large move of people to advertisements and not sponsoring. This also causes the market to be more expensive for your game to do better. I am a little annoying I lost money on something I didn’t even know of and something no one was informed of until the change had happened.
I mean, I guess the idea is that one day it will be different once more developers localize their games. Even then though if a game supports multiple languages it’s useless. I think your idea of moving it down is good.
The idea with the top 250 only for the featured sort is that they ALREADY have a stable fan base and can retain users. This is just Roblox’s way of picking the games they want to represent their platform.
Still wish we had genres back. Getting pretty tired of only being able to find Phantom Forces and ROLVE games as the only shooter games on the games page… and then featured games only being the top 250 games… and now the games page is useless to me because its a jumbled mess of random games with no sorting whatsoever…
The “Because you liked” part doesn’t even worked. I liked my own game years ago and its still only recommending games based on this while I have liked tons of games after it… not to mention every one of these games are either dead or closed to the public. Not to mention this is platform based and universe main place based so its not even the correct player count.
Same issue as above, player count isn’t even shown the same way, like why?
Not to mention it’s also the same games…
Popular near you currently resides second to the top for me, and I think that popular near you makes up for the fact that popular is near the bottom considering they are generally the same list.
After seeing a really rude game crop up in a “popular near you” sort which involved nudity - I never want to see it again and not to mention most of the games there are somewhat low quality or a clone of popular. I’d rather the “popular near you” sort be removed in all honesty - same for recommended for sending me to fishing games to steal my password of which Roblox has listed as “recommended” which is extremely rocky ground.
Not sure why this was changed and in 2019 I still don’t get why we as users can’t just customise the sorts to our own liking by using something like the standard “move/drag” square.
Each section is already split up, even if we didn’t use these and used some directional arrows. I personally would like my order to be something like;
- Top rated
- Popular
- Featured
I’d also benefit for an option to remove duplicate games on the front page. Okay I get it you’re popular, top rated, featured and what not but it’s extremely boring to see the same game 3 times on the games page when those could be undiscovered game spots for me to try out.
The Popular Near You sort should take priority over the Popular (global) sort. However, they should not be shown both at once because they overlap a lot for English-speaking countries at this moment. By default, it should show you the games most played in your country. There should then be a setting somewhere or a filter/link that allows you to see global popular because this can still be interesting for players/developers to see and can be an additional way to explore popular games, but it should not be immediately shown.
Popular Near You is going to become increasingly more important as Roblox gains more monthly active users in non-English speaking countries.
I fully agree with BuildIntoGames, TheAmazeman and FamedChris. It’s not a good idea to cover the Popular tab, because besides having the Featured sort showcase games like Meepcity (as shown below), which clearly don’t need this support, they make it harder to actually get attention via sponsors and ads, this to not talk about how users will have to scroll the page every time they want to check the most played games at the moment. Of course I believe it’s good to help smaller games reach a bigger audience, but that’s why we had the Featured sort. I don’t think that making users have to see those smaller games every time, even if they don’t want to, is not a good option.
It would be awesome to have this idea implemented.
Yeah I personally felt stabbed in the back when I waited 2 months to get my game featured only to be told that the criteria had been changed and my game already needed to be popular to be featured.
A sort for new games would be nice.
The popular section is great because it reflects the community’s general interest. The featured section is representative of the few players who have voted for featured as well as a single person’s personal choice. I have no problem with promotion for smaller games, however when those games represent a smaller audience’s interests, they should be placed accordingly. Another aspect this change entails is its hurt for the new and upcoming games by burrying their sponsored ads deeper in the games page. All in all this change feels like it solves a small/non existent problem and creates a massive new one.
While many don’t like this change, I welcome it with open arms. Roblox is one of, if not the only notable platform that sorts primarily by popularity. There’s a reason Roblox is on it’s own in this; this kind of sort doesn’t cater games to the people who are most likely to enjoy and play them.
An algorithm, or at the very least games being selected by Roblox themselves (i.e. Featured) is a great way to combat this issue. I understand that many are upset that the model of ‘rush advertise’ then allowing the game to self-promote will no longer work, however I think in the long term this will lead to much more promotion of quality games that players really want to play, rather than just whatever’s popular at the time.
It may appear that this hurts developers and players alike, but that is not true at all; this change will allow small developers to expand much more rapidly without the need for substantial investment on their games, since everyone is given equal opportunity.
It will also show to players games that they will enjoy, love and keep playing; addressing fringes of players who don’t like the games on the front page and have a hard time finding games that they like.
Here’s what I say:
If you have an enjoyable and well made game, this update will be nothing but good for you. If you’re a player who doesn’t always want to play what’s highest on the popular sort; this update will be nothing but good for you too.
I’m kind of turned off by the missing dropdown menu.
As an aspiring developer who’s recently had great success, I’m mostly for this change. A hand-picked featured section ensures that quality games (usually) are always up top, and it’s not the same games for six months. However, there is one major problem:
Paid Access games
This new sort makes it hard for paid access games to surface. Paid games are rightfully rewarding for the developers and players alike. The reason this is bad for paid access games is because the Featured list restricts paid games, nor will paid games be very high in Popular. The one exception is Top Rated, which paid games may or may not do so well in. Maybe Roblox doesn’t like paid access games?
I suggest we bring back the “Top Paid” category, which will show you only the top Paid Access games. Not sure how this was sorted, but I think by games sales or game sale revenue would be good.
Featured only pulls from the top 250 games, so it isn’t helping small devs.
It’s hurting people who have tons of players from making GOOD GAMES, and are maintaining them.
They force developers to use Rthro avatars (That, let’s be honest, people rarely use other than for a meme or something) to get featured. Then, they force Featured on the top of the games page, and stop games that people like.
They simply want to force their updates on the community, even if they suck. What a despicable thing to do…
Aren’t you kind of proving the point that “Popular Near You” needs to be scrapped? For most, it’s just popular but with incorrect player counts.
And to add to that, if you use it to join players near you then you’ll be out of luck because it’ll just add you to a server how it normally does.
They’ll never remove it, not even for American players, because they want to “Support smaller countries”, even though it just wastes our screen space. I see why you would have that option in Brazil. I don’t see why you would have that in any english-speaking countries.
