Clarification on code flagged for safety review

The fact this has already gained over 600+ replies in 4 days shows that there needs to be better clarification of this system and how it works. Whether or not you agree with the new system, it’s obvious they’ve explained it poorly if there’s almost 1k replies and more than 80% of them asking questions or disagreeing with this new system.

Also, I 100% agree. To me, I feel like this wouldn’t of gotten as far as it did if they explained to developers this new update was coming months ahead, so they had the time to adjust their code / make edits to fit the new guidelines.

It’s the fact they had to clarify on the system after something had gone wrong (as stated in the OP.)

This post shows a lot more than just the issue with the new system, but also the issue Roblox has with telling it’s developers important and massive updates until someone demands it from them.

Alright. I don’t seem comfortable with this platform anymore. The fact that this seems like a search biased on the raw data of the code, and not the function of the script. eg, custom chat filters, role-play assets, or maybe even some script obfuscaters. None of the raw script data should be visible, so why should enforcement be placed on it? And if all scripts will be checked, how do we know that our scripts aren’t being just copied for reference? The fact that this platform has a weak moderation bond, and is starting to check elements in a game that are not even visible to the consumer, is just making the moderation weaker, and gives me a reason to rethink coming into this platform.

This is the worst change ever. Litreally, your digging yourself a hole to die in.

Why exactly do we have to keep our scripts ‘PG13’ if the only ones that could possibly read it is ourselves and exploiters/hackers? Literally no one else can access these things.

Your moderation ways have always been bad. I’ve reported countless of 18+ Images that got through moderation, tons of exploiters, and none of them have been deleted from the platform. This update is yet another step in the wrong direction. How about you fix your actual issues before you ruin the work of people that made your platform what you are today.

Personally, in my opinion I would not feel secure that code that we made private, to our development team ONLY will be seen by “specially-trained team” for manual review. Who are these people? And if I make a custom chat filter that have words that Roblox doesn’t censor that are bad, will my code be flagged? Our code is private, who else reads it but our developers? Roblox’s Moderation efforts have not been efficient besides the swearing hashtags. That’s as far as it goes, people still spam phishing links, find a way to write swear words on shirts, make inappropriate games. Moderation efforts should be put into getting rid of the people who join games and spam phishing links, not this.

This.

This is by far one of the most useless, garbage updates I’ve seen so far.
Punishing people for scripts that only you, and exploiters will see? If exploiters choose to look at the source of the script and be “harmed” by what is inside, that is absolutely their fault and should not fall back on the developers.

Now this realllly gets me. Non invasive? You have got to be joking. I want to know the following:

  • What are you trying to resolve? Like for real? You’re scared that some ~13 year old is going to stumble across profanity when they more than likely dont even know what a script is? Dear god Roblox.

  • Why has this been in place BEFORE it’s been announced? Say someone has a fully published quite big game that has a few swear words in the scripts. They live off of that game, and you’re removing it for virtually no reason?

  • Most important in my opinion, why studio scripts. I’d get it it if the script was available to the public as in a Plugin/Model (only slightly more), but why in the absolute WORLD is it studio scripts?

I found my understanding of coding and computers in Roblox. Roblox was my starting point for computers. This update is making me reconsider developing on Roblox.

If Roblox does not start listening to it’s developers who make there platform possible. There going to end up in a deep hole. I have talked with a few Developers and they have “That’s it we are done with roblox platform.” I am starting to agree with there side. This was just something that was never really needed. I mean if there was a child law involved I could see why. Doing my research I have found nothing. They should be fixing the moderation system they have before adding stupid thing’s like this to it.

Well, we’re not really listened to it’s just the truth. Or at least I feel as a developer we’re not listened to. This “old update” proves it, we were not told prior to this update so now dev accounts are being terminated for not knowing about an update…?

And I thought Roblox was my friend, someone who didnt look over my shoulder 24/7. But yet again, it’s a business, and they’re probably selling our personal data for money. (I saw a tracker on the roblox website via a extension once) This change just seems like this is where they are going.

If they actually removed it, I would be in elation. I’m getting personally nauseated just reading replies about the same topic without any action being done on Roblox’s part.

Why not open-source scripts only?

there should be no scripts being moderated, its private.

If someone has read almost any reply to this thread (or seen KonekoKitten’s video on the issue), there would be no way for them to deny the glaring lack of transparency and purpose that this update had. Even worse, it’s only intensifying the already considerable distrust that the community has for it’s platform, especially with the case of @ReverbAnnoucer.

Also, having been the ‘friend’ that @Oliveihelp mentioned and having been in a somewhat similar case to Reverb’s, I can say with confidence that you might as well give your appeal to a brick wall if you were banned/terminated for any reason, even if it was entirely false. I got no sort of reasonable reply from the appeals email other than seemingly auto-generated responses and the eventual total rejection.

I feel like I’m just regurgitating what could have been said earlier (and I probably got a little off topic), but it’s likely that this won’t just end with this update being reverted, if that’s even considered. It’s evident that the moderation system desperately needs the overhaul “confirmed” at RDC 2019 as soon as possible, or we’ll all suffer some kind of consequences.

What’s interesting is that we’ve had automated systems to detect “bad” games for years now. Namely games failing to filter text. And we’ve always had asset moderation for the rest. This is an awkward and inefficient way to attempt snuffing out prohibited content. Never mind all of the already realized and soon-to-be-realized ways to fly right past any sort of review. Or any failures upon this “special” (read: probably outsourced and given a guide) review team.

I smell inexperience.

As I have read the posts of this thread, I saw that this thread is about code flagging (Like filtering)

This is an necessary update, but how I see this, it’s poorly managed. There are many ways where you can get banned without a reason. But I want to give my own reasons of how you would/wouldn’t get banned, just a suggestion:

When someone should be warned/banned:

  • Publishing an inappropriated code for the public (Open-sourced, models, etc.)

When someone could be warned/banned:

  • Having an inappropriated code in a Team Create game, the users participating in the game can report the user who wrote the code.

When someone shouldn’t be warned/banned:

  • When the code is for personal use
  • When the script is used to filter words.

Thanks for reading

100% agreed on this because these scripts display alot of personal information such as API’s and etc. I also think that why should our scripts be moderated when the only people who can see them are the developers and not the players it just doesn’t make sense. This is going to cause alot of chaos within the development community and cause people to leave due to their scripts being read by roblox employees. We are also expecting to give people access to our scripts who we don’t even know personally.

At this point everyone may as well spam @DevRelationsTeam so that SOMEONE in HR will stop hiding behind their anonymity to address our concerns, questions.

If being an annoyance is the only way to grab their attention than we’ve got to do whatever it takes. Whether I get moderated or not for behaving inappropriately isn’t my concern anymore. We’ve reached 600+ replies within a 4 day span to gain nothing aside from silence so that implies we’re not being loud enough. Do we have to resort to profanity, threats to get their attention because everyone is capable of stooping that low. Most of us I’d hope wouldn’t… yet it’s always a possibility which should be a RED FLAG for how easily this problem could escalate

Roblox should only be moderating code if the public has access to it. There is literally no point in moderating private scripts that only the developer can see.
