Class ideas for horror game

Hi there! I have come up with some ideas for the 8 players that will be within my new horror game, ‘Vermiculus’.
For context, please read here to get some more info about the game.

  • Player 1 - Flashlight Bearer
This player is responsible for keeping track of the flashlight and becoming an essential asset to the gameplay. Player 1 must keep track of the batteries and replenish them throughout the game. If fail to do so, the entire group becomes suspectible to an attack from the shadows.

  • Player 2 - Nightvision Goggles
This player is responsible for seeing things that the flashlight bearer might not be able to see. They can see within dark corridors or the darkest forests known to man. They can detect whether or not an enemy is coming, but Player 2 is responsible for keeping track of batteries as well.

  • Player 3 - Bat Swinger
This player can defend themselves and other individuals by using their weapon- the bat. It can attack the enemy if they get too close, causing a stun on the monster for about 3-5 seconds to get away. The monster itself is faster than the player, so they’re essential to the game.

  • Player 4 - Pistol Bearer
This player can defend themselves and other players by using their weapon- the pistol. It can attack the enemy much like the bat, except long-ranged. This is essential, especially if the enemy is close-ranged or if Player 3 is out of the game. However, ammo is very limited in this environment and can only be collected through crafting foreign objects.

  • Player 5 - Telekinesis
This player has the ability to control certain objects in the game, however, this player isn’t skilled in lifting heavier objects. They can lift up boxes, rocks, and throw it at the enemy OR use it to solve puzzles. They’re also essential, as they are required to reach places that aren’t reachable.

  • Player 6 - Medical Assistance
This player is the support of the group, healing the teammates that are severely injured or need help healing themselves. They have at least 5 uses of their medkit until it’s all out. In order to gain materials for healing, the player must either find them or craft them. Other players can also use the medical items throughout the game, though one thing to keep in mind is that they’re EXTREMELY rare to find and will probably find only 1 or 2 during each gameplay session.

  • Player 7 - Radar Detector
This player is responsible for detecting enemies nearby, and can have it out at all times. However, the battery is known to drain VERY QUICKLY. If not managed correctly, the players will have a disadvantage and will have a team member that doesn’t have any value to the team. Replenishing through battery is not possible and should only be used in important and dire situations.

  • Player 8 - Waterbreathing
Finally, Player 8 is able to breathe through underwater due to some… unknown circumstances. They will be used as intel gathering, and can get to unlock doors OR to see a location that the normal players aren’t able to access. If Player 8 leaves the game or gets killed, not only do they use a valuable asset to the team, but you also lose how to get important information from a valuable team member.

What are you thoughts? Would you change anything about how the players would work? I’d love to hear some wonderful ideas.

I’m really sorry if my question is stupid but what would really happen if one of them dies, 3 times. Would the remaining players still be able to continue without him (and his skill)?

Not stupid at all!

The players would be able to continue playing through the game, but would be at severe disadvantages since every member plays a crucial role into the game. I’ll be making alternative routes for characters that aren’t able to reach high heights, or swim underwater for too long.

Seems fair! Is there also any way for them to gain their ability (of the dead ones) by, I don’t know, taking their blood for the ones with a skill inside them, or their item if they only have this for their skill? Maybe a lower version of the skill?

I never thought about the idea of taking their blood to get their abilities! I wouldn’t know how to implement that, so now I must experiment and do my research with it. As for taking the item, that may be possible as well- I’ll just need to implement some adjustments to my game.

Still, the idea of taking their blood would be REALLY fitting for what this game has in mind, so thank you!

When someone would die, their body would maybe stay forever (or until someone “loots” it) in the server (I think it wouldn’t be that bad if one or two bodies remain visible) as ragdoll. People would be able to interact with it, making them play an animation and gain their ability (at a lower point, not fully), I mean I think it would work.
Anyway, your project looks very good!

That is something I’m DEFINITELY looking into, and something I’ll be looking into after I do some things in the map I’m trying to make! I’ll post updates in a different thread in the future. Thank you!

This is a very different style of horror games then the others, And all I can say is this is a great game and it seems like a lot of sense.

1 question:
How long does the 8th player can last underwater? I know that he/she can go underwater for periods of time, but just to make it harder you could add a mechanic that if the 8th player stays too long underwater would he/she get hypothermia or waterborne diseases or infects like the brain eating amoeba
Anyways cool game

That was the plan! I was going to make it to where there’s a cold system in the game, as well as a heat system too.
There’s going to be cold segments and you pretty much have to worry about a lot of things.

Thanks a bunch!
