Cloth Simulation

With the new realistic morphs and layered clothing, developing detailed realistic characters on Roblox has become easier than ever.

However currently Roblox has no built in Cloth Simulation physics. Many other game engines including Unreal Engine 5 have a built in Cloth Simulation which can be used to realistically move clothings such as skirts and hair which also collide with the characters body.

This feature is already seen in Roblox by a developer made open sourced module called SmartBones therefore Roblox should implement this as an official part of studio to go with the “realistic” look the new characters, facial animation and layered clothes is giving.

Given that, as you said, we can already make clothes simulations with skinned meshes + SmartBone 2, what functional difference would be made by baking it into the engine?

By providing built-in implementation, developers don’t have to look for the right implementation, write extra code, and potentially worry about performance implications. It’s definitely not a necessary feature, but nice to have considering that Roblox encourages to take advantage of their physics engine (e.g., constraint based car > raycast based car).
