Create Experiences for People 17 and Older on Roblox

Agreed. It’s easier for me to access actual inappropriate stuff on the internet than play 17+ games on roblox. I feel like age ratings should be a suggestion for parents to see, and can deal with that how they want to. There should always be a stable relationship between the parent and child before unmonitored internet access is given. However… we come back to Roblox’s corporate ideology, and they cannot risk any legal trouble whatsoever when it comes to this kind of thing, so it has to be hard for kids and actual adults alike to play the games they want.

I’m confused, I live in a country next to Saudi Arabia, so does that mean I can play the game?

Are you even surprised at this point? A day passing without dying in this country is a miracle.

With the recent changes made to Guts & Blackpowder, I’m hoping there will be more for developers as time passes. Maybe allowing for a low violence mode if a player is not verified to be 17+.
I’m also hoping that the current 17+ policy will be less strict over time.
I don’t believe Roblox’s official rating dictates what content is allowed on everything. There’s been a blog post from the ESRB which I highly recommend reading.
Things might be the way they are because of laws in select countries. So, if more content would be allowed for 17+ or even 13+ experiences, it runs the risk of being inaccessible beyond South Korea, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

EDIT: Adding a bit of a TL;DR here. I’m just hoping Roblox gives more information on their long-term plan and incremental approach to this.

Having features teased early would be great for developers, as it gives them time to think of ways to use them.

If you’re not in the specific countries, then I think you can still play 17+ games with ID-verification.

Today we renamed the following descriptor options for Experience Guidelines:

  • For the intensity of Violence, we renamed the Intense option to Strong.

    • Note that this option is only available to you if you are a verified 17+ user who is eligible for 17+ creations.
  • For the frequency of Violence, we renamed the Frequent option to Repeated and the Infrequent option to Occasional respectively.

There is no action required from you at this time. Please note that this is only a wording change and does not change the definition or moderation of the Violence descriptor.

We encourage you to learn more about our Community Standards and 17+ Policy to make sure the Guidelines for your experiences are up to date and accurate.

Thank you.

Personally, I don’t see much appeal to this. I was hoping to see a reduced chat filter for roblox and seeing this got my hopes up, but the chat filter is still the same. I don’t see why they couldn’t change it for 17+ users or even 17+ experiences. Other than that, stuff like gore and alcohol might make 17+ users feel more welcomed to roblox, but I think the chat filter is a big thing that makes 17+ users not really want to play if they can’t even say simple stuff like numbers.

Nope, it’s prohibited by the Community Standards: “Except where prohibited by local law or regulation, we allow unplayable gambling content (e.g., showing a casino or non-playable characters playing cards) as well as games of luck and chance that are not casino or gambling based. However, experiences that include simulated gambling, including playing with virtual chips, simulated betting, or exchanging real money, Robux, or in-experience items of value are not allowed.”

Although not explicitly mentioned, I believe blackjack would fall under games of chance or luck. Additionally, the wording of “not casino or gambling based” rules out stuff such as Texas Hold 'Em or similar. Carnival games such as Plinko are in a gray area here however, but I wouldn’t try it.

Probably yes. Depictions of alcohol are allowed in 17+ experiences, and the above quote from the Community Standards only appears to target virtual chips, Robux, or something of the like. However, like anything on Roblox, you can be moderated for it.

Uh…depends on how you go about it. There is an alcohol-less version of beer pong where you just don’t fill the cups. Although the name “beer pong” would still go under 17+ experience guidelines if the text on the Experience Questionnaire is to be believed, so if you’re gonna put it in, just include the alcohol bit.

Adding onto this: Beer pong isn’t gambling, there is some skill involved in it. It’s not a game of luck or chance. Although it can become “gambling” if someone bets limited items on it, but that’s the fault of the players, not of the developer (so you should be fine, I think.)

this goes a bit beyond just 17+, but could there ever be plans to integrate a way to dynamically introduce age-restricted content into a game (in a similar fashion to PolicyService)? i could imagine a good few applications of such a system to allow certain age-specific mechanics without forcefully jacking up an entire game’s rating and losing out on potential engagement (a shooter game where people are depicted bleeding if the user is 13+, soft drinks that can be shown as hard and act as such if the user is 17+. etc)

17+ experiences are now available to eligible users on all platforms including iOS. Those who are 17 and older and completed Age Verification are able to enjoy these experiences.

At this moment, 17+ experiences remain unavailable in Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.

Thank you.

So I wasn’t going crazy about me being able to use my phone for 17+ games!

I appreciate you guys getting it unlocked for iOS!

Thanks for the availability update. I personally don’t use iOS devices but I still consider this an absolute win.

On a related note, I do have a question. With Spatial Voice now also being available to those who have verified their phone number, are there plans for Roblox to add a function to Player objects to return true or false if the player has completed age verification?

You can check is someone is ID/phone verified with player:IsVerified()

I am specifically talking about ID-verification. Phone verification does not permit access to 17+ experiences at this time.

I hope it stays this way.

We’d like to remind everyone that simulated gambling is disallowed on our platform. Learn more about this update and ensure that your experiences comply with our Community Standards.

The new simulated gambling ban rule is just completely absurd. If you can’t obtain the currency used to gamble in casinos with robux or real money, what is the big deal? Yet another idiotic update from Roblox. Great job. And the fact they say loot boxes are still allowed. FYI, that is GAMBLING TOO. I’ve put so much progress into one of my games for it to all be blown away.

We need this ASAP.

If Roblox is trying to head towards a more diverse player base in terms of age which was evident by the several things announced at RDC and the whole 17+ experiences thing in the first place, then we need these abilities so we can create effective 17+ experiences. There are only limited successful / popular 17+ experiences at the moment, we don’t have enough tools at our disposal to make these possible yet; we can’t create 17+ thumbnails, icons, or create assets that could be viewed by people <17. This should be a priority if Roblox want & expect us to create 17+ experiences to diversify the player base.

p.s Just got banned for creating a thumbnail on my 17+ experience featuring two characters holding hands. Nothing else ‘romantic’ was in the thumbnail. Wasn’t aware that this wasn’t allowed [yet].

You can now add Strong Language to 17+ experiences. Learn more here.

I’ve waited so long for this! Yes, some words are still censored, so as not to offend anyone personally(of the players probably). Best update ever.

Apologies in advance for the bump.

I really want to create a game that would likely fall under the rules of ESRB’s T rating. With current restrictions, it would not be allowed, even under the 17+ guidelines. Even if it were, I wouldn’t work on it on Roblox.

The only thing that really separates 17+ from 13+ is the allowance of alcohol and strong language. I haven’t seen a game related to romantic themes yet, and I doubt I will(might be best this way). Games that include violent content tend to be 13+ even if they are what I would call realistic.

I also don’t see why alcohol is accepted while tobacco is not allowed. Both are used in social situations and both are commonly attributed to substance abuse. Alcohol isn’t any better than tobacco. BUT HEY, DRINKING IS COOL!

I feel as if Roblox followed a more standardized rating system similar to the ESRB or PEGI, then people would feel more motivated to make games that are for older audiences, as these guidelines do not seem worthy of being classified as ‘17+’.

Again, I just don’t think this rating system is very appealing to developers, and they won’t be ‘aging’ up their games for a bunch of silly restrictions for something supposedly for people aged over 17.
