Create Experiences for People 17 and Older on Roblox

You’re acting like kids don’t play violent games, roblox gore IS NOTHING no adults >25 wants to see fake blood with the material smoothplastic come out of a rectangle, adults wanna see actual skulls or heads coming out off human like bodies.
Roblox is doing this just to harvest IDs but its okay because it doesn’t say it does, this is my first time seeing a “game” company force its user to send an id to play gore games.

Under 17 users cannot play OR create 17+ games.

What a way to shatter every single teenager of my age dreams of becoming an actual game dev.
Unity or Unreal are literally becoming the next big hit game engines, even Apple acknowledged unity yet gives two craps about roblox “engine”

I believe this feature was released prematurely, with too many restrictions right from the start. So far, I haven’t seen many benefits from the 17+ experience, especially since users are not allowed to freely use strong language. I have consistently been moderated for using such language in voice chat servers, even though the context was among my friends. It would have been great if this feature had been introduced with the option for users to express themselves more freely.

It is challenging to envision this update bringing greater potential earnings to your experience, primarily because it initially restricts 62% of Roblox users. Additionally, you must ensure that your game development team consists of individuals who are 17+. Furthermore, in certain regions, the 17+ experiences are not yet available. Honestly, the current update only seems beneficial if you are attempting to create something violent or gory. However, it’s worth noting that there are already games on the platform that incorporate mature themes and blood, accessible to 13+ accounts. Therefore, this update appears unnecessary. I hope you release the upcoming features ASAP.

Although I personally think that gating 17+ experiences behind an ID verification wall is the safest way for Roblox to roll out this feature, I definitely agree that these guidelines will make it extremely difficult for 17+ experiences to receive some if any engagement from the Roblox userbase, rendering the production of such experiences worthless.

I can see why Roblox would require age verification though since Roblox still has a very strong stigma about being a “kids lego game” (which remains mostly true) despite efforts to draw in an older audience. At first glance, I was excited that Roblox finally began to show interest for the 17+ age demographic. However, stringent restrictions, coupled with plaguing experience discovery and moderation issues, could result in this age demographic choosing other platforms over Roblox, as well as 17+ game developers choosing other game development applications over Roblox Studio.

First off, this is a wonderful feature and I hope 17+ assets will be allowed soon as well. Being an older dev Roblox’s current moderation has felt way too strong for those of us who were here back when the moderation was very minimal. Given Roblox’s latest changes to their moderation, I think this is a good step in the right direction for make Roblox a place for EVERYONE. While I understand the importance of protecting the youth online, for those of us who have made a life, so to speak, on Roblox or have it as a part or full time job, its hard for us to fit in.

What I am more curious about however is: Will this apply to only users who are only 17+? Or will it apply to users who are at or above the age of majority for their respective state/country?

Weird, unnecessary, and it requires me to give a third party an image of my driver’s license. I’m not even going to go as far as to call this update bad because I don’t expect anyone here to be ill-informed enough to trust a third-party company with access to information as sensitive and personally identifying as their driver’s license.

Honestly, I wouldn’t even mind it if it weren’t for the requirement of age verification. Other 17+ games prudently omit this requirement, but it seems that Roblox thought they were different. If someone lies about their age they can’t be upset when they see gore/drugs/dating/whatever roblox wants to include under their metaverse umbrella nowadays.

I suppose this was going to happen eventually. But it now seems like roblox is trying to separate their game into two core flavors: an <18 children’s game and an 18+ “adult” online hangout space. First of all, this is completely confusing and further obscures their already widely encompassing brand.

To put it simply:
Parents will hear about/get an idea of inappropriate games and restrict their kids from joining.
Adults/teenagers will view it as nothing but a children’s game and disregard the platform entirely.

The negative reactions so abundant within the pre-existing Roblox community arise out of two primary factors: Roblox’s established reputation as a kid’s game as well as the difficulty in using the >17 features the site now so prominently boasts.

In conclusion, Roblox’s incessant efforts to age up the platform have been met with nothing but backlash from the community. It seems Roblox disregards this backlash in the hopes of acquiring a new userbase… a userbase which, either as a result of these efforts or not, already has a negative opinion of the platform.

I’m not against <17 playing more violent games, it’s just that a platform like Roblox needs more caution after all the accusations and dramas it has gone through. In my opinion, a phone number and more parental controls would be enough, but considering Roblox’s past and its current main audience that is not possible… for now. It would also be good to put into consideration that Roblox is very different from places like Xbox and Steam.

Though I get your point. Roblox is not a babysitter and parents are the ones that have the responsibility of protecting their children from the dangers of the internet.

This update is really good but it is useless at the same time, why adult gamers would give a chance to roblox if they need to pull their id to play games with a more mature content when they can simply download steam and buy any +18 game like gta or doom without the need of verifying their identity.

It is not gonna work, a lot of people is not ID Verified because its literally too much to play a damn game

If I wanted to see violence mixed with a toxic community I would get on Call of Duty. Roblox is just a little late to the market on this one.

Heck, you can probably just look up a picture of a drivers license on google and upload it.

I am HEAVILY against this update

I’m assuming this update is going to also affect existing games so likely, we’re going to be forced to give our IDs to Roblox to play games we had access to. Not to mention, most of the fun games on this platform would fall under the 17+ category.

Not to mention, like what @weakroblox35 said, gatekeeping violent games are not going to protect kids. Violent games are filled with children anyways and age verification isn’t going to change that. This may be good for your PR but this is going to be very damaging anyone actually using this platform.

My solution to your issue is to utilize the parental controls that still exists, keep 17+ experiences default to off. It’s mostly the parent’s job to be aware of the content that their kid is using and the fact that parental controls is being forgotten is pretty bad.

If you want to protect children then actually moderate this site and don’t unban predators like you’ve done in the past but this is assuming this update was for the protection of children.

EDIT : new information has came to me that Tencent owns a good portion of Roblox, I’m not a fan of Tencent and I believe that they collect data so my conspiracy theory is that this isn’t for protecting children but more of trying to obtain more data by restricting access for more IDs. If this information is true and I’m right on what they’re trying to do, Roblox as a platform may come to an end much more sooner than expected. (Could also just be fear-mongering)

Because it would result in bad press towards Roblox if they didn’t have these restrictions in place. There already has been a lot of hit piece articles negative of Roblox relating to inappropriate content and that’s just in relation to material that Roblox doesn’t even allow and actively moderates. Now imagine a similar story but now it’s an experience that is now “allowed” on the platform w/ the new age guideline filters.

It may feel restrictive or guarded, but with how Roblox operates and the wide demographic of people playing Roblox, it’s ultimately needed for both the protection of younger age groups and to prevent PR mayhem.

Because ESRB rating only applies to the platform as a whole. Unless the ESRB changes up how they operate to allow these experiences to gain ESRB ratings, we’ll all have to deal with Roblox’s system of age guidelines.

Well congratulations, you just committed a form of identity fraud! In all seriousness, there’s only so much Roblox can do to ensure that a user isn’t lying about themselves, and government issued ID is practically top of that list. If someone provides Roblox their ID for Age Verification, then I’d say it’s pretty reasonable for a corporation like Roblox to automatically assume the one sending the information is also the one who uses/controls the account. They’re simply working with the knowledge and information they have been provided.

This is what I’ve been talking about. There’s been a lot of news articles and videos about Roblox containing inappropriate content and cases about pedophiles, and predators on the platform.

Now imagine if they release this feature without ID Verification, tons of news companies would put it out as Roblox blatantly allowing mature content such as dating and gore, thus causing more negative reactions towards Roblox and possibly even causing financial harm to the company.

A step in the right direction but does not go far enough to liberalize more mature content in my opinion.

Me too, this update kinda ruins the whole point of my game :frowning:

My game is related to gambling, I made the game based on the premise that it would be allowed as long as it’s not with actual money, man this update suck :frowning:

Roblox would say this experience is 13+ only and any user that joins agrees to see violent content as they put their birth date accordingly.

Well I won’t be participating in this for one reason. ID verification. I do not think Roblox needs to verify that someone is over 17 to play these games. If someone say 13 plays a game that’s rated for 17+, that’s on the parents, not Roblox or the developers. Would have been a good update if not overshadowed by this once again…
