[CRITICAL] Future Lighting Technology crashes Roblox Player and Studio

On any place in Roblox Studio, if the Lighting’s Technology property is set to Future, the place will freeze and Roblox Studio will crash without warning. In addition, if a place that already has Future lighting enabled is opened, Roblox Studio will freeze and crash without warning.

Attached below is a video of me reproducing the bug on a blank Baseplate template with no alterations:

I have also attempted to join certain games on the Roblox player, which results in Roblox immediately crashing. I believe that this only occurs to games which have future lighting enabled, which may be related to this bug.

Here is a replication of this bug when I attempt to join a game with Future lighting enabled.

Here is a list of the things I have attempted to try and fix the bug. All of these were unsuccessful, and resulted in no change to the bug:

  • Reinstalling Roblox and Roblox Studio multiple times
  • Restarting my computer multiple times
  • (Under the Rendering tab in Settings) Changing Roblox Studio’s Editor Quality Level to Level 01.
  • (Under the Rendering tab in Settings) Changing Roblox Studio’s Graphics Mode (Direct3D11, OpenGL, Vulkan, Automatic)
  • Disabling all Plugins installed
  • Enabling the Unified Lighting beta feature (When enabled, no places are able to be opened or created, and Studio crashes immediately)
  • Doing a clean boot

System Information:

  • Computer: ASUS Zenbook S14 UX5406SA
  • Operating System: Windows 11
  • CPU: Intel(R) Core™ Ultra 7 258V
  • Memory: 32.0GB
  • GPU: Intel(R) Arc™ 140V GPU (16GB)

Expected behavior

If everything was working correctly, I should be able to open any place with Future lighting enabled, as well as set a place’s Lighting Technology to Future without Studio crashing.
I should also be able to join any published game which uses Future lighting without immediately crashing.

[UPDATE] Added link to log file PM: https://devforum.roblox.com/t/log-files-for-critical-future-lighting-technology-bug/3551403?u=mad_scientist99
PM contains log files for the following:

  • Setting a place’s lighting technology to Future
  • Opening an existing place using Future lighting
  • Opening any existing place using Unified lighting beta (attempted solution mentioned above)
  • Joining a Roblox game using Future lighting

[UPDATE 2] I have found a temporary workaround to part of this issue by using Vulkan rendering and Unified Lighting (realistic). This prevents Studio from crashing.

You need to attach your log files in a private message. If you have already, you should include a link to the DM in this post to make it easier for staff to find (the DM itself is private).

Thank you for reminding me. I have sent a message to bug-files and attached a link for staff’s reference now.

Added a workaround to the bug report that addresses Studio crashing (Vulkan + Unified Lighting), thanks to @PlushSkin for sharing this method. It appears that I am not the only person encountering this issue.

This is also affecting my son’s laptop that is also using 258V processor (Lunar Lake).
Yoga Slim 7 15ILL9. Attempting to launch a roblox game using future lighting instantly closes the application, tried numerous workarounds w/o success + clean driver install, latest GPU driver etc.

Looks like another bug report here has same case: Roblox Instant Crashes on Intel Arc Graphics

Also found this earlier report on Intel forum with interesting information: Roblox Specific Games Give GPU Related Crash - Intel Community

Here they mentioned

  • The logs indicate that the Dedicated Video Memory (DedicatedVidMem) is reported as 134217728 bytes (128 MB), whereas my GPU has 8 GB of VRAM.

Perhaps roblox may be misdetecting some property of the GPU that could be contributing?

I updated the driver a few days ago. Seems like that fixed the issue for me

Hey, it looks like your son and I are facing the same issue here with the same exact laptop model. I have already made a bug report as well and is currently communicating with them via the Roblox support through their email. Currently, they have only told me to try the common ways to help fix the issue but have tried all without success.

What is your cpu/gpu for your system?

Intel Core Ultra 7 258V w the integrated graphics Arc 140V

Hey! I found a workaround through the intel community post that you have posted. I tried the steps and it works for me!

This works on my laptop! Thank you for sharing this workaround.

For anyone else experiencing this issue and reading this, I added all Roblox executables to the list: RobloxPlayerBeta, RobloxPlayerLauncher, RobloxPlayerInstaller, and RobloxStudioBeta.

Am currently looking into this issue so ya’ll won’t have to be doing this for long hopefully. This issue seems specific to Arc GPUs and from what I can tell there’s a strong correlation to Ultra Intel CPUs specifically. I’m trying to get my hands on one of these machines internally.

While I’m trying to get my hands on this hardware, would you be willing to help with a repro by any chance? I need an account to temporarily bind to a testing channel to tell if this is a new configuration issue or if its like inherent to the hardware and a fix needs to be shipped.

Did this work before on this device also?

I’m willing to help with a repro, however I will be quite busy for the next few days so I can’t guarantee I will be readily available.

I can’t remember for sure if it worked before on this device, it’s been about a month since I purchased it.

Oh yah for sure no prob, I would probably have a device before then, so no worries.

This is amazing that a Roblox staff have replied after I’ve emailed them twice… Hope yall can fix this issue!
