Maybe in 2020! I sure hope so.
Custom fonts?
I have been thinking about some ways games might be able to create a better user interface, after some thought on the topic I would like to ask some of the developers on Roblox how they feel about this and how it could help them in the work/profession they do. Personally, I think this would help many UI designers, because a lot of them use different fonts which helps the UI look better in other programs, but Roblox is limited to certain fonts.
How could this help Roblox for the future?
- Personally I believe this could help Roblox in many ways such as making more user interfaces feel more legit or even fit more in with the game theme.
Issues
Some issues that have been presented to me are the copyright issues. This could lead to legal battles, but if Roblox had moderators review the fonts, would that help in any way? Personally I feel like Roblox has or is working on a way to solve such issues, many issues could also play into affect with the testing Roblox has done on a possible “video system”
How do you feel about this?
Tell me about the ups and downs on the Topic, I would really like to hear what you think about the idea of players being able to add custom fonts into games they create.
It’s been half a decade since this very basic feature was requested and we still only have 13 fonts to choose from, wyd roblox???
They recently had a font survey here in case you missed it: https://devforum.roblox.com/t/more-fonts-fill-out-the-font-survey/683411
Looks like that’s coming soon™. No truly custom font feature though.
UPDT: New feature ROBLOX added, fonts are now available in the ROBLOX creator marketplace though not uploadable yet.
Well, thats one step in the right direction.
The next step is how the hell do you moderate fonts?
Why would you need to moderate fonts?
People could change up the sprite-sheet to display different letters in the wrong place, so they could bypass the filter by making normal words bad ones, but not as displayed in the filter.
(reply to @052008cooljp)
I imagine copyright would be the single most problematic issue. In terms of filter bypassing, although it’s already possible for developers to bypass Roblox’s filter, I don’t think making it easier will help this feature’s case. This isn’t to say that I don’t support custom fonts, though.
please please please. The fonts Roblox provides (even the new ones) are TERRRIBLE. Most of the new fonts look the exact same. If we could upload our own fonts it would be a LIFESAVER! Imagine all the new possibilities with text.
Maybe because fonts are an image, and images on roblox are moderated.
For clarification, what I meant was how would we moderate them for copyright. (as fonts can be copyrighted)
I absolutely agree. They’re good alright, but they’re literally the same thing with just some minor differences that you can’t tell unless you’re TRYING to spot the differences
I guess this is kind of a thing now; there’s a font marketplace now, isn’t there?
I’d love to see this feature. My games require Tahoma, Helvetica/Helvetica Neue, Convection UI and some other fonts to be accurate to the original media.
While I could use a community made module or use a similar font, this approach is not reliable or accurate to what I want.
The ability to upload .ttf (TrueType) or .otf (OpenType) fonts would be an awesome feature, and would save me a lot of time on finding replacement fonts or using a community model.
However, there may be issues with copyright. I think it would be best for creators being unable to make their fonts available on the Font Marketplace unless they’re ID verified, or through HUMAN REVIEW to ensure that the fonts are not copyrighted or contain inappropriate material.
If the font is detected to be copyrighted, then the font would be made not be able to be made available on the Font Marketplace, or the font would be deleted unless the user has proof of owning a license for the font, which can be sent via upload.
ain’t no way you just said that bro.
there’s a lot of instances where a custom font is needed, maybe for an advertisement in game, a restaurant logo, etc.
This would come in handy to a lot of people, I wanted to make a handwritten-style writing for a GUI I needed, and we know that the writing of normal people isn’t like this, and all letters are different, so if I was able to upload a custom font and make each letter have more than one image would be great!
Would also be great for writing things in an alien language
Bump…
It’s frustrating when every font available doesn’t fit your game; with no option to upload your own.
I’m pretty sure Fonts are Enums currently, maybe the ability to replace existing fonts would be the path Roblox might take to NOT break existing code. One huge problem would be people not realising that most fonts are not actually royalty free and you do need proper licensing.
I do want this feature in my game so that I can make it more original.
Now they’re FontFaces, and can be loaded from the cloud so there’s no technical issues.
That could be solved using an accountability system similar to the new Audio system, where you have to vouch you have rights to your assets that you’re using.
