Oof, something about this smells really bad to me. At least you guys finally made an attempt to recognize developers… I guess? This is certainly underwhelming to say the least in comparison with benefits YouTubers/star code users get, but then again they are free advertising and we’re not. Guess we’ll see how this turns out for those applicable, though I’m sure the pool’s gonna be very small
Why not reward developers who achieve lifetime visits milestones?
It’s easier to calculate and older games aren’t left out the equation.
And isn’t Roblox meant to be powering imagination? Instead this just seems like powering monetization…
Hi,
I wanted to let you know that the other awards are focused on different metrics. This has now been updated in our FAQ to reflect my comment. Stay tuned for the next phases!
Surprised to see so much backlash from this. If this was something you got instead of 140k yeah I’d understand - this is obviously not worth 140k. What is worth 140k is the 140k which you would have been already paid. Honestly I’d be a bit more annoyed if it was something expensive, like imagine they send you a 24 karat gold roblox logo. All the comments here would be about how they would prefer to be paid more instead of receiving this.
As just some minor thing they throw in once you pass a milestone, I like this. Ideally at some point they’d be able to fit in more specialized merch, rather than generic Roblox, but overall it’s a nice gesture.
I admit it would be nice to see some smaller tiers - doesn’t need to be anything crazy, maybe another design notebook, or just a certificate/card. I’m not sure how much distribution costs but if I can receive a mailbox worth of spam every 3-4 days I doubt a small card would be impossible.
If I had to guess though, they’re trying out the system on a lesser-amount of developers in case things go wrong, and then scaling out from there. In which case hopefully the next tiers are more accessible.
Looking forward to seeing how this evolves over time!
Hey, a few of us still have some questions over when they email the users who meet the requirements? In the FAQ it doesn’t really state when the emails actually roll out (unsure if its today or another time). Thanks!
(my assumption is that they were already sent out)
This is very poggers thank you roblox
Backlash might not be warranted, but I think it’s an appropriate response to ask why they’re doing it, though. Why at that DevEx bracket?
Normally swag bags and goodies are sent as an incentive, keep going, stay on our platform.
It’s fair to say any developer earning well over six figures a year is not going to need much incentive to stay on the platform.
Let’s say, hypothetically, the swag bag cost them… a very generous $100 to produce and mail out. Would it not be more beneficial to send it to new up and coming developers?
Maybe at $10,000? $15k? Perhaps even your first $1000, 500k visits, etc.
“Congratulations on making your first steps!”
Roblox can quite easily eat the cost of shipping these out at a much lower bracket, and thus encourage the less experienced developers to stay with the platform.
The fact that it’s just some minor thing is exactly why a lot of people are questioning such a large milestone to obtain it- making it feel like a useless reward to make those who are already part of the top 0.01% feel even more exclusive.
So while I am equally excited, and looking forward to where this program might go, I’m skeptical of the message this first wave is sending.
Your reasoning is backwards.
You work for the incentive that you will receive DevEx and the swag bag, not receive DevEx and the bag before you’ve worked. The bag shouldn’t motivate you to continue once you’ve reached that level of income; it’s there to entice new developers.
This swag bag is not an incentive, lol. It’s a reward that, when received, can motivate you or encourage you for hitting a milestone. A cheap backpack with socks is not going to be the motivation to keep developing on the platform.
I share your sentiment, but I do not agree. What other things can be considered as meritable values to reward someone with? Youtube doesn’t really hand out play-buttons to people who contributed to the community.
Youtube also doesn’t require you to have made $140,000 USD to get a play button, either. You don’t have to be making money on Youtube to receive acknowledgement and such.
It requires you to earn quite the amount of subscribers… Trust me, you make well over 140k USD with the right following provided you monetise your channel well enough. Maybe rethink what you said.
I made my own studio hat and jacket and I like it a lot, this milestone is pretty hefty for a few branded items I can get myself. I wish studio branded items were sold as casually as the regular Roblox hat merch because anyone can be a developer! It takes time dedication, skill, community involvement, and years of developing to get to a high milestone of achievement for the platform though of course… In which awarding trophies or perks for developers who reach those milestones would be a pretty cool honor. I hope Roblox comes out with studio logo merch at some point.
I never said you couldn’t have made $140k. I just said that it doesn’t require you to make $140k. You can have a popular youtube channel without receiving any money and still get Creator Awards. WIth this system Roblox has introduced, you are required to monetise and have a massive audience to even hope to attain this.
And a word of advice, don’t act so cocky with the “maybe rethink what you said” line. This is a community to foster collaboration and such. I was giving my opinion, and you gave your opinion; there is no need to act cocky about it.
The “bad thing” is that it requires developers to monetise if they want anything. Youtube, as you used as your example, does not require monetisation in order to receive physical items for your accomplishments.
Just accept it as a gift to congratulate you. It never stated anything about encouraging anyone to stay at the platform.
Literally the first sentence of the post.
I’m mixed about this. One one hand, it’s nice that Roblox is actually starting to acknowledge and reward developer achievements. On the other hand, I do agree that it’s a bit underwhelming, especially when you consider the worth of the amount of Robux that you have to get in the first place. To their credit, income is a much more reliable metric than something like likes or place visits, but maybe adjust the amount required for tier 1 to be a bit more obtainable.
I’d also like to know if the rewards are sent to all identified developers of a game since group made games are becoming the norm. It’d be weird if only the main dev gets the swag.
Having money denote a milestone indirectly promotes get rich quick schemes, such as shooting out copies and low effort simulators. While I thought the problem was starting to go away, this new reward system is making me think otherwise.
Plus, the proportion of 140k USD to the actual cost if the reward so large that this emphasizes the total opposite issue of Roblox not paying their developers enough.
And, developers have always been treated as a cohort under Star Creators who not only get the fame and glory, but also a generous share of $$$, which is not distributed adequately to developers.
IDK, Roblox’s repose to our grievances are always unexpected and half-satisfactory. Please work on large problems like this better rather than faster.
I really don’t have a good feeling about this recent friction between the corporate and developer levels…
Right, I forgot that I also had issue with this encouraging low effort money farm games.
I agree on some points but the one I do not agree with is that you think there’s an issue with your point “indirectly promoting low effort simulators”. Think of one free market that doesn’t do this. Any media and platform will use algorithms that promps the user to consume content that the algorithm knows other users liked. The platform nor the reward is inherently “evil”, it is rather your perceiption of it which kind of sounds like jealousy to me.
