I’m reluctant to comment on this feature release, as I am aware this is going to be an unpopular opinion. After seeing @DomDerpRBLX’s image of how the clouds look in-game I can’t help but find it…
Ugly.
The release of this feature was heavily anticipated for quite a while, and I feel that it delivered in an underwhelming way. All the points I could make about cloud shapes needing randomization, the ability to have different types of clouds, adjusting the Y-position of the clouds, adjusting the speed at which clouds move, etc… have all been brought up already. I personally feel like the clouds we got now look like Minecraft-styled clouds. They look like chunks of clouds that were just stuffed with ParticleEmitters.
I think this should be revised, and if this means going back to the drawing board, starting from scratch and having us wait another year, please do it. Because I would prefer a genuinely good, well-rounded, game-changing feature to ship that is finished and ready for the development process, rather than get the half-cooked feature shipping that we are getting right now.
I do appreciate all the work that went into this, and I apologize if I am coming across as harsh. I want the best for this platform, and I think we need to have high standards in order to push it to its limits. So please reconsider this approach.
This will be changed in the future. Take a look at the roadmap on the post:
“Phases 2 and 3 will extend features to allow flying through and above clouds, with further lighting improvements and controls for cloud types and shapes.”
You get my point. Clouds dont feel like Clouds… And its weird how I see a ton of little sticks sticking out of them… And it looks too perfect. Clouds should look very random
Hopefully the intensity options will make them look less artificial. I think they won’t look as bad if they allow us to fill the entire skies with them or let us change their hues, possibly even randomise the height of some of them.
If they don’t then i don’t see anyone using them because currently that’s an absolute eyesore.
This is probably one of the most awaited features for me because the possibilities are endless with dynamic skies! This is probably a little overdue, haha!
I only have a small critique, that when you are walking towards them it looks like they are further away, which throws me of a bit. (Also they look a little like cotton cubes instead of clouds, which is a bit distracting?) But other than that, this is a great feature to be improved and I cannot wait for it to be released fully when it’s ready!
could someone elaborate more on this? it seems like an interesting feature but i’m not too sure that how’d differentiate from how the atmosphere/cloud systems work now. i assume it’d have different properties that allow for dynamic scripting and such (like checking if a player is surrounded by fog from atmosphere that remains in one place/check if it’s raining, if weather is added along with clouds)?
but anyways, really glad to see this long awaited feature finally coming to the engine so we can finally stop making shoddy meshes float through the sky or whatever other way we were making clouds before.
