Dynamic Skies Are Getting Cloudy

These look phenomenal! I’m very excited and can’t wait till they’re released, these have so much potential for realistic builds!

This looks great, but I have a question.
Where will the properties be located?

What about realistic cloud shadows? In @DomDerpRBLX’s photo, and the photo at the beginning at the topic, the clouds don’t cast shadows

Since clouds are at a very high altitude, the cloud shadows are very soft/blurry in real life (Shadows in real life blur over distance because of diffusion)

Example of diffusion and cloud shadows:

Soft Cloud Shadow:

Diffusion:

I tried to see if there was a way to get soft shadows in the Roblox engine like in the pictures above, and found that the Voxel lighting system worked nicely with a makeshift cloud I made

As you can see, voxel is a very good lighting system to make realistic cloud shadows, which brings up the problem that most developers prefer to use ShadowMap/Future technology to create games because of the accurate lighting system. I propose that you should “blend” the lighting systems together. I know it’s easier said than done but please consider this.

I feel like part 1c may include clouds casting shadows in the game but unsure. They do say the next part is collecting feedback so likely enough people asking about it could add it.

Remember everyone, this is just phase 1a, the most simple and minimalistic phase of the 3 phases. This is just the earliest beta phase of Dynamic Clouds, most likely to get a feel for it and any bugs and problems before they start with the wind, custom shapes, etc. I can assume it will become a lot more in the coming months. I’m quite excited to see it in action!

I’m definitely going to use this in my games a lot to make them feel more life like, it adds more realism to games which I like!

In my opinion, this looks really good & I can’t wait until this feature is released. :+1:

I think the same if we take into account that it took 4 YEARS to do it taking into account this video published in 2016 it looks better the clouds look very strange dark and without atmosphere that is supposed to be shown in the DRC this year but not I know if these photos taken for the RDC 2020 were roblox they look much better at least add graphic options for the clouds

My question is why they put it in phases, they already had the work done and that was shown by the RDC

Releasing it all at once is risky, as the more you change the more likely something is to break. It’s also worth mentioning that stuff shown at RDC isn’t always a final product, and maybe more unstable behind the scenes than it looks like on the surface. This stuff takes time, and I’m sure they’re working to get it out as soon as it’s ready

Wow. This looks really Nice.

I should hire @ProfessorKJM as my developer for my cafe. These admins know how to script, build and everything. They probably better developers than us.

@ProfessorKJM 100% Hiring you! Your a really good Developer right here.

If you would like to take my offer Message me on the DevForum or Discord. Jimmy Son#4958

Everyone hire this dude. 100% Trained Professional Developer!

LOL

Definitely agree with you there, this feature has so much potential but I do hope it gets to the point where it can look like those clouds we saw years back and can also perform well with a good amount of customization.

This is just phase 1a. Phase 2 or 3 would give what you see at RDC and in the screenshot. They did this probably cause phase 2 and 3 is very unstable and needs more work and probably wanted to get early performance stats. Hell, they couldn’t even release phase 1a when this announcement was made which is just the most barebones and basic of the clouds. No need to worry ill meet up to our expectations when its 100% finished.

Oh it will, don’t forget that this is just phase 1a., basically its the barebones of clouds.

Oh, I’m excited about this. Cant wait!

Looks promising so far although I’d say the clouds look a bit blocky and I wish there could be a way to customize them. Great work though :+1:

I hope since this goes in the workplace, (in the future) it will also be able to go into a part for positioning and resizing clouds or some type of terrain like panel that we can use to paint/draw clouds where we want them if we don’t want to fill up the sky but rather put clouds around mountains or something. Coolness.

Thank you, that seemed to work for me. :+1:
