I think this is the best course of action. Of course this is ROBLOX we’re talking about, best we’re gonna get is a slight improvement that may or may not make things better, but it’s worth fighting for. Best case scenario, ROBLOX fires whatever idiots wrote this and finds an actually good way to fight IP theft on ROBLOX. If this policy goes through I’ll have to can about half of my plans for the project I’m working on as they kinda rely on being able to do this.
Not to mention games like Starscape that no longer recieve updates but still violate this policy…
Honestly i feel like people are legit over reacting too much, especially people who arent even Roblox Developers in the first place. cough cough RetroStudio in game protest…
I mean yeah… this policy update is not great, but as long as we dont act TOXIC to them, then they would consider NOT doing this policy.
Honestly i especially dislike people who arent even Roblox developers (aka normal players) are joining on this, while not even knowing what it even means and also adding other stuff that isnt even related to this change like bringing back 2d faces and stuff like that. again cough cough RetroStudio in game protest…
Long story short, stop over reacting and stay calm.
You fail to understand that this will affect nearly every game on the platform. Any game that uses any assets available on the catalog is now violating this policy because of how horribly it was written. Nearly every frontpage game would be considered in violation and would be susceptible to a ban.
Addendum: not just assets available on the catalog, but offsale assets too. And if it’s possible for a player to put it on their avatar without purchasing it then it also counts. Yes, this means admin commands and bodyswap potion. The wonderful world of vaguely-worded policy!
I’ve mentioned this in a past post I’ve made but Roblox should, if they really wanted this policy, police people actively profiting off of UGC items they didn’t create - like offering them as microtransactions in their own game.
Say, for example, you made a shooter. You can customize your character ingame with customization “packs” featuring a plethora of hats in the UGC without permission. This is what Roblox should be tackling if they want to give more rights to the UGC creators. Avatar editors/catalog games shouldn’t be affected by this policy if they’re already offering the person to buy the items in an outfit they’ve made.
One of the best pieces of advice I can offer to Roblox is to not alienate the people who use the site to be creative and to offer that creativity to others. The money making games can co-exist with the games that generate little to no profits. My game, for example, has zero gamepasses and zero microtransactions. We allow free use of the Roblox catalog so people can customize their characters and roleplay. I’d be amazed if we were infringing on any UGC creator’s rights as if someone wanted the hat for their normal Robloxian they could just buy it themselves.
Games like Arsenal use assets that are both on-sale and offsale. Because of this policy, they have to either replace them, or put on purchase prompts, which is probably tedious since Arsenal has so many outfits!
Can you imagine Arsenal being put under review because of this? It would be pretty bad for Roblox since it’s one of their top earning games!
Roblox needs to properly address this update. I’m almost sure they did not talk with the community before even pushing foward an update like this and giving us 1 week to comply.
1 week is a short time frame for developers, specially those with huge games, to comply with the new policies. They should reconsider the person which is choosing such small span of time for devs.
Precisely. This policy doesn’t really do anything to address the problem. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if this policy were kept identical, except ONLY applying to UGC items - leaving any and all (offsale included) ROBLOX-made items as fair game - then it wouldn’t be terrible.
Acting like this is exactly what made ROBLOX postpone the rollout and (supposedly) revise it (we all know full well they aren’t going to improve it by much). Being complacent and saying “Oh please ROBLOX don’t do this or we’ll be sad!” isn’t going to help either. This is putting people’s sources of income in jeopardy.
I don’t mean to sound negative or “toxic” or whatever - I want this to come off as respectfully as possible but…
What else do people do?
As long as they’re contributing to the discussion without name-calling or use of harsh language, people are allowed to be frustrated with the platform they spend thousands of hours on building, scriptings, etc. making a tone deaf decision. There is no excuse for some of the ways people acted, but there have been countless moments where Roblox has outright ignored their developers - the people who keep their lights on. For every 2 steps Roblox takes forwards, they promptly take 3 steps back.
It would be a massive hit to Roblox’s catalog of games either way. Shutting down a lot of games would be impactful, and privating a massive amount of games would be equally as damaging.
It’s pretty much a choice of two poisons and one door.
Shut down A LOT of offending games, easily impacting many players and possibly making said players leave Roblox since their player data may end up missing, and if there’s something you should never do, it’s removing a massive quantity of commonly used data, such as games, player data, assets, etc. (Similar consequences took place because the majority of audio got clapped into the void, except people didn’t leave, just that the boombox gamepasses of games were much less desired.)
Developers private their games, which won’t cause any moderation to take place, but it will probably damage concurrent player count. Player data is preserved, but players won’t be able to get in the games for a while, still hurting the catalog of games.
Roblox can either find the perfect middle ground to make this less of a pain for both developers and UGC creators, or they can discard the policy and the platform will resume as it would before the announcement.
There is absolutely no excuse for threatening violence upon ROBLOX employees in any situation. Ever. This behavior goes far beyond your normal toxicity and I agree that the people behaving that way should have absolutely no voice in this conversation.
