Staff Appointment Notes
Dental Assistant: Cleanings, Check-Ups, Sealants.
Dental Hygienist: Whitenings, Fillings, Bondings.
Dental Technician: Crowns, Retainers, Retainer Check-Up, Dentures, Veneers.
Orthodontist: Braces, Braces Tightening, Braces Check-Up, Braces Removal, Spacers.
Oral Surgeon: Extraction, Dental Implant, Wisdom Tooth Removal, Root Canal.
CLEANING
- Hand scale the client’s teeth.
- Use a machine scaler to scale the client’s teeth.
- Ask them what flavor of toothpaste they’d like, the options are mint, bubblegum or strawberry.
- Gently begin brushing their teeth with the gritty toothpaste.
- Rinse and suction.
- Apply fluoride treatment to the surface of their teeth.
- Inform them not to eat for the next hour to prevent the fluoride from rubbing off.
CHECK-UP
- Ask the client if they have been experiencing any issues with their teeth recently.
- Ask them if they brush at least 2 times a day, if they say no, recommend to them that they do.
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Ask them to open their mouth so you can check their teeth.
- Check their mouth for cavities.
- Check their mouth for plaque and tartar.
- Take an X-ray of their teeth.
SEALANT
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Thoroughly rinse and suction the tooth.
- Apply etching solution to where the sealant will be placed.
- Use an air nozzle to ensure the tooth is dry.
- Prepare and apply the sealant.
- Ensure it’s positioned correctly.
- Cure the sealant with a curing light.
WHITENING
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Place retractors into the client’s mouth.
- Apply protective gel over the client’s gums.
- Apply the whitening gel onto the surfaces of the teeth.
- Activate the gel using an activating light.
- Allow it to sit before rinsing and suctioning.
- Remove the protective gel from the gums.
- Inform your client that their teeth may be sensitive for some time after the treatment, and to not eat anything for the next hour to prevent staining.
FILLING
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Numb the area around where the filling will be taking place.
- Drill the cavity, ensuring that all infected or broken parts of the tooth are removed.
- Suction.
- Ask the client if they would like a gold, ceramic, or silver filling.
- Apply the filling.
- Set it using a setting light.
- Inform your client that their teeth may be sensitive for some time after the filling, and to be careful when disturbing the tooth.
BONDING
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Color-match a composite resin to the color of your client’s teeth.
- Gently abrase the surfaces of the teeth that are being bonded.
- Apply the resin to the surfaces of the teeth that are being bonded.
- Cure the resin using a curing light.
- Polish the surfaces of the teeth until the client is happy with the look.
CROWN
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Numb the gum surrounding the tooth.
- Isolate the tooth.
- Drill the tooth.
- Rinse and suction thoroughly.
- Place the crown onto the tooth.
- Ensure it is secure and set into place correctly.
RETAINERS
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Take impressions of their teeth.
- Apply plaster into the impressions, this will create an accurate replica of their teeth, and wait for it to set.
- Once set, place the plastic over the plaster replica, and wait for the plastic to cool.
- Once cooled, abrase the edges of the retainer to ensure it will fit into the client’s mouth.
- Place it into their mouth ensuring that they can place it in and remove it, and it fits well.
RETAINER CHECK-UP
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Ask them if they have been having any issues with their retainers so far.
- Ask them to place their retainers into their mouth.
- Ensure that they still fit correctly.
- Check that the retainers are not damaged.
- Ask the client to remove their retainers.
- Clean their retainers and hand them back to the client.
DENTURES
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Inspect the client’s mouth.
- Take the client to the x-ray room and take an x-ray of their teeth.
- Take impressions of their teeth.
- Color-match the denture shade to the client’s teeth.
- Secure the dentures in the client’s mouth and ensure they are happy with the look and they are comfortable.
VENEERS
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Color-match the veneers to the color of your client’s teeth.
- Gently abrase the surfaces of the enamel on the teeth that you are putting the veneers on.
- Apply the veneers to the surfaces of the teeth.
- Bond the veneers using a bonding light.
- Polish the surfaces of the teeth until the client is happy with the look.
BRACES
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Take x-rays of their teeth.
- Ask them what color bands they would like: red, orange, yellow, green, navy, teal, magenta, violet, white, black, silver or clear.
- Place retractors in their mouth.
- Rinse and suction their teeth thoroughly.
- Apply etching solution to the surfaces of their teeth.
- Suction the solution off the surfaces of their teeth.
- Apply a small ‘drop’ of glue on the center of each tooth.
- Apply the brackets, and ensure they’re in the correct position.
- Set them into position using a setting light.
- Retrieve the smallest wire, and place it through the back brackets.
- Secure it with the bands they chose.
- Trim the ends of the wire before asking them if there are any sharp bits.
BRACES TIGHTENING
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Ask them if they’ve been having any issues with their braces so far.
- Ask them what color bands they would like: red, orange, yellow, green, navy, teal, magenta, violet, white, black, silver or clear.
- Place retractors in the client’s mouth.
- Remove the old bands from the brackets.
- Remove the wire.
- Get a thicker wire and place it back in the back brackets, and then onto the main ones.
- Secure the brackets with the new bands.
- Trim the ends of the wire before asking them if there are any sharp bits.
BRACES CHECK-UP
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Ask them if they’ve been having any issues with their braces so far.
- Ask them if they have any questions about their braces.
- Ask them to open their mouth and examine their braces.
- Take x-rays of their teeth and compare them to their old ones.
- Estimate when they’ll be able to get their braces off.
BRACES REMOVAL
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Inspect their teeth.
- Loosen and remove the brackets using pliers.
- Remove the glue on each tooth, using a polisher.
- Rinse and suction.
- Take impressions of their teeth.
- Take them to the x-ray room and take x-rays of their teeth.
SPACERS
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Prepare the spacers.
- Place the spacers between the molars.
- Ensure that the spacers are in the correct position.
EXTRACTION
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Rinse and suction.
- Numb the gum around the tooth/teeth that will be extracted.
- Gently poke the gum, asking if they can feel it or not.
- Gently loosen the tooth, before removing it.
- Suction.
- Place a cotton wool roll into the space where the tooth was.
- Notify your client to rinse their mouth after eating, and that it will be sore for a few days whilst it heals.
DENTAL IMPLANT
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Rinse and suction.
- Put them to sleep using general anesthetic.
- Drill a small hole where the implant will be placed.
- Secure the implant.
- Rinse and suction before waking them up.
- Ensure they are happy with the implants.
WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL
- Ask them if they have any questions before you proceed with the appointment.
- Rinse and suction.
- Put them to sleep using general anesthetic.
- Loosen the wisdom teeth, before extracting them.
- Suction.
- Place cotton wool rolls into the spaces where the wisdom teeth were.
- Wake them up, before securing them an ice pack.
ROOT CANAL
- Numb their tooth.
- Isolate the tooth using a dam.
- Begin to drill the tooth.
- Rinse and suction.
- Seal the tooth using a root canal filling.
