^ Bump because there’s no way to control shadow behavior at all and more properties that can change lighting heavily for good. Also, i wanted to mention that roblox locks some graphic properties or functions for no reason or limits them very badly, like Color3 and 0-1 range property types (by that, i mean you can increase or decrease its value, which can give unexpected results).
I can’t list locked properties because they’re not needed for me right now, but when it comes in hand, it becomes really frustrating.
bump !!! ROBLOX SHOULD DO THIS
I agree. We should have more control with lighting to be honest. speaking of lights when unified lighting came out I swear roblox said they would make it so Light attenuation would be customisable.
bump
I’ll make sure this thread is seen by Roblox developers.
BUMP!!! ROBLOX SHOULD DO THIS!!! Future Lighting needs to give us more access to lighting related properties.
Bump. Roblox really needs to give developers more control over light attenuation and other Future Lighting properties.
I don’t even use pointlights in my projects, because their attenuation is so gross
Bump.
Interesting thing that happens with SurfaceLights is that when you make a part wider, the attenuation changes.
we don’t need forced auto optimization systems for people who don’t know how to make a game. which by the way are so overboard that the “optimization” isn’t even worth it and just destroys the physics, visuals, etc.. in a desperate attempt to gain, i’m not joking, maybe 2 more FPS. we should have full control over the engine
you neglected to mention that roblox is the only engine that pulls this kind of shit. no disrespect intended, but this is a very bad take and we shouldn’t be patting them on the back for this in any remote capacity. take the render distance issue for example, it is broken by definition. imagine a game making engine where 90% of its players can’t even see the game. that’s pure insanity, and the engineers do nothing about it except make a fast flag for themselves so they can have quality 1 at max render distance, while everyone else can’t without hacks. oh wait, they recently made it so people can’t use that flag. LOL
this “it’s GOOD the engine is completely handicapped in ways that no other game making engine on the planet is because performance bro” mindset has set the engine back decades
we don’t even have control over render distance. our games get dislike bombed because players literally cannot see the game. before you say “uhh that’s because your game lags” no. roblox’s own stats pages shows the average FPS is over 80, my game performs great actually. the problem is the engineers do not make games with the engine they work on, and as a result are out of touch.
making the game invisible for a gain of again, maybe 5 FPS, is completely indefensible. roblox’s lighting engine is so broken, that i haven’t used it in years. it’s artistically useless, it’s broken by definition, and has no render distance. there is a reason you never hear of developers from other engines moving onto roblox. an engine that doesn’t even let you set render distance is simply not a real engine
there is a reason you never hear of developers from other engines moving onto roblox.
This is actually something you hear about quite a bit if you’re tuned into those kinds of things.
Studios like Talewind and The Gang.
Creators like MrChickenRocket (who now works at Roblox) and Bungie co-founder Alexander Seropian.
And then there’s all the anonymous unknowns. I’ve talked to a couple of devs from various well-known triple a studios, who switched to making Roblox games.
bungie co-founder? you mean the company that drove itself into the ground after never making a good game after halo? and this chicken rocket guy’s game is completely dead in the water. these examples you’re listing do you no favors
no one in this thread knows what talewind or the gang is. from looking at their websites, these are the classic faceless roblox companies that specialize making.. not games, but rather products, designed to maximize the satisfaction of the recommendation AI, by making something that siphons as much time and money out of minors as humanly possible. that’s dystopian
here’s something a guy whose worked on multiple official roblox events such as the haunt had to say to me a year ago:
i talked to a dead rails dev who talked to the engineering team behind roblox because optimization and just the lack of ability for developers to be able to adjust this shit is insane. like me personally my vendetta is not being able to set my own fucking cubemaps. night scenes look like shit. the reason they do this is because corporate tells them that they refuse to give the power to those players
You’re just moving the goalposts now mate.
“We never hear about this”
“These examples are bad for these weird arbitrary reasons”
Theres countless more if you go looking for them. Just own that you made a ridiculously invalid statement instead. You can still have the rest of your arguments be valid.
Maybe give better examples because none of these people being successful is hardly an arbitrary reason, unless you’re implying that’s a hard concept for you to understand for some reason.
“weird arbitrary reasons” you mean the people you pointed out having dead games and the corporations being ran by people who use an army of wage slaves who don’t play the games they make, to make dystopian slop with the sole intention of siphoning as much time and money out of kids as humanly possible. i guarantee you, the people who own these companies are not playing the games their employees make, nor are the employees themselves playing them outside of bare minimum play testing, because they just want to get the work over with, and know the game sucks.
because again, they’re not real games, they’re designed to maximize play time and money, that’s it. i’m supposed to be impressed by that or take that as a counter point/example that i’m wrong? that’s supposed to mean something? these companies aren’t making games that will last or are memorable in any capacity and pretending it’s anything more than that is disingenuous
Just own that you made a ridiculously invalid statement instead.
you could just accept that you don’t really know what you’re doing/taking about. we don’t have beef with you, we just want people like you to stop barging into these threads any time someone calls for change, asserting that actually, roblox blowing its own foot off at the expense of everyone using the engine is a good thing. everyone from front page devs, to roblox’s own former employees, have been begging them for nearly a decade to fix just the render distance issue alone which by definition breaks every game on the platform.
