How can I improve this Work in progress low poly boat?

Recently, I have been creating a boat for the first time in blender. I didn’t really enjoy what the boat came out as after building it. I quite wonder if anyone know’s any ways to improve this boat, it would really mean a lot! Unfortunately, I can’t create texture’s and never have before, so any ideas that have to do with texturing the boat I can’t really do yet.

Review Points

  1. I think the mast’s framing is too thin, especially on the bottom. The vertical piece of wood looks way too skinny to be able to support the large horizontal cylinders.
  2. The back area of the boat looks like it’s a specially-shaped Lego piece that has no real purpose. Try looking at reference images of other ships and see how they do it.

Conclusion

If you want, you could create the model in Rōblox Studio and export it as a mesh. That way, you’d be able to add any details you can’t easily reproduce on Rōblox.

As a low poly boat it’s lookin quite nice, Its simplistic and looks like it is low in poly count (as it should be) To maybe improve it, maybe take a look at some boat references and possibly add extra features wherever possible to make it seem extra real

For your first low poly boat, you’ve done quite a good job. While you may not have textured before, your application of the simple colours is great. With that said, I think there’s still some room for improvement. Here are some of my suggestions as to how you could make it even better:

Mast Width

First things first, I agree with @VisualPlugin that the masts are too thin. The masts need to be strong enough to hold up everything that’s attached to them. Naturally this means they’re typically quite large, especially near the bottom. They should at least be larger than the ship’s supporting beams, as seen in the photo below.

Ship’s Hull Shape

In your model, the ship’s hull doesn’t conform to the raised wooden area at the back of the ship, known as the quarter deck. In most ships, the body would follow the curve of the quarter deck rather than circle around it. I’ve included a reference image below to better explain what I mean by this.

As you can see, the hull (and by extension the light-brown edge above it) encapsulates the entire shape of the ship.

Additional Props

I think adding some additional props such as low poly cannons, crates, windows, fences and an anchor would add more life and realism to the model. A wooden steering wheel would also fit in nicely. You can’t steer a ship without a wheel!

Conclusion

As I’ve mentioned before, I think you’ve done quite a good job for your first low poly ship model. I particularly like how you’ve applied the different colours. With a few slight improvements here and there, I think you’d have a ship ready to sail the seven seas.

Best of luck with the rest of the project!
