A while ago, I tried playing Roblox on mobile for a few minutes. Although I am not a mobile player, the most notable of the experience was frame rate lag. (I have an iPhone 7, it doesn’t matter if you call me “poor.”)
Thinking about that, I began to wonder how many people are playing on low-end devices. There was this chart back in RDC 2019, telling us that most people play Roblox with phones. Something is telling me that most people are not privileged enough to have high-end devices. And that other factors of some popular games include the language, the graphics, and the gameplay loop to lure them in.
welp, my most viral game is mostly played by players with low devices due to it being an spanish audience (im guessing most of them are old android devices or old PCs), the game is VERY optimized (only eats 1.5k MB on PC and it has A LOT of stuff, i tested with my iPhone 11 and it eats only 1k MB memory). but yeah average client FPS is like 45 FPS.
So yeah, when you plan on making a game, make sure its optimized for low-end devices as they will be a huge % of your players
At the end of the day, it really depends not on how many low-end device players there are in Roblox, but instead in your game’s audience.
For games like arsenal, bedwars, adopt me, Brookhaven, and other games that have younger audiences tend to have more players with lower-end devices. On the other hand, for especially like roleplay games like ER:LC, a lot of players play on higher-end devices. So really, it just depends on your game’s audience and what type of game you’re making.
I would probably dependent on what type of game you’re making, optimize it a bit, see community feedback, then work towards more optimization if necessary
Adding on to that, it’s always good to optimize your game to potentially attract more people, but at the end of the day, you have to balance optimization, game quality, and your time, and possibly even other investments such as money.
