How to Archive Avatar Items

Hi Creators,

We heard your feedback around archiving items and are happy to share a new, easier way to archive your previously-uploaded avatar items.

Starting today, you can directly archive non-limited avatar items and bundles by selecting Archive in Marketplace from the three-dot menu in the Creator Dashboard. This includes:

  • 2D Classic Clothing
  • 3D Layered Clothing
  • 3D Accessories
  • Bundles, such as Bodies and Heads

Limited items cannot be archived at this time.

This will be a permanent archival of your avatar items that cannot be reversed. You will not receive any account moderation consequences as a result of any avatar items being archived on Marketplace through this process.

Please Note: You are still responsible for ensuring your creations do not violate Roblox’s Terms of Service or Community Standards. Content you upload to Roblox should not infringe on the IP rights of others.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you.

FAQs [Updated November 1, 2024]

Does this work for archiving non-avatar Asset IDs?

  • This process is specifically for archiving non-limited avatar items only, including both layered and classic clothing. You can archive assets from the Development Items section of the Creator Dashboard, which removes it from the website and makes it no longer usable or visible in Roblox experiences, including your own. Instructions can be found here.

If I previously emailed a copyright agent, do I need to fill this out again?

  • If your archival request via email has not been processed yet, we recommend that you archive your assets manually using the process outlined above.

Can you archive bundles?

  • Yes this process will also support archiving of avatar item bundles.

Can we archive other asset types such as animations?

  • This process specifically supports archiving non-limited avatar items and does not support archiving animations.

Which avatar items can be archived?

  • Avatar items, including bundles, must have been published at least 180 days prior in order to be archived. Items that were published in the last 180 days cannot be archived using this process.

Will users be refunded for items they purchased that were then archived?

  • No. Users will still have access to items they have previously purchased after those items have been archived.

If items are not removed completely, can archived items still be subject to an IP takedown report?

  • An archived item may still be the subject of an IP takedown report, but your decision to archive the item will be considered when applying any account penalties related to the IP report.

Can you document what it means to archive an item? Will the development assets be deleted? Will someone be able to insert them via Roblox Studio? Will the Web API show the name, description, and uploader of these items?

  • When we archive an avatar item, we are making the following changes:

    • Your item will no longer be discoverable in Marketplace, and additional users will not be able to acquire it.
    • Existing owners of your item will continue owning the item in the inventory and be able to wear it on their avatar.
    • The underlying development assets for the avatar item will continue to exist, and the archived avatar item can still be inserted via Studio if the assetID is known.

This topic was automatically opened after 10 minutes.

This was a long awaited feature for users who have published content they no longer wish to have on the platform. Having to go through support or copyright agents was an awful experience.

I hope that this automatic process will prevent violation/moderation from being applied to an account, considering the previous process apparently did not prevent it.

In the past, I safely removed assets and they ended up turning into TOS violations, which were denied for appeal even though they were already approved for removal (and removed).

It’s great that we’re able to archive items now!

However, for something permanent, the button seems way too accessible. I can already foresee developers accidentally clicking “Archive in Marketplace” and permanently removing the asset.

A good update, instantly after probably the most catastrophic update yet.

Glad to see this change happen.

Why do I not see the option to archive?

EDIT: I have the option now.

Something similar was said with the previous process and it did not prevent actions to be applied to your account. However, I hope that this automatic process removes that issue.

I think you can have your moderation removed by providing a ticket id of the asset?
Either way it’s concerning to hear that…

Do you plan to bring archiving to models? I have a few models I can’t remove from my profile due to the “Add/Remove from Profile” option being removed from models, and archiving is the best I can get to removing them from my profile.

Amazing update but i have a question, can upload fees get refunded if something gets archived if it never has been onsale? This is my maim concern because sometimes UGC items that i upload have bad thumbnails and arent suitable to be put onsale

I agree with this, not to mention some items also have a “[ Content Deleted ]” thumbnail for some weird reason?

That too, like sometimes that can be taken care of by making a ticket but its not optimal waiting days for a thumbnail to get restored; as it’d be better to reupload

Oh I tried, I got denied twice even though they agreed that the list of given ID were safely removed. It is unfortunate and even though they said this:

“No strike or moderation action should be applied to your account as a result of this request. If you receive a strike or moderation action, please reply to this email and we will assist you further.”

They still denied to remove them. I also can no longer appeal them.

For added context, I did not want the assets restored but the Violations removed as I went through the process of removing them safely and they had already been approved + removed prior to the violations being applied.

This isn’t an issue I’ve personally faced, but I’ve seen others bring it up and personally know people who were affected (at this point long ago) getting moderated or even terminated for items on their accounts despite the fact they submitted the items to be archived using the email they were meant to long before the moderation action occurred. These moderation actions were a result of taking action on items that were uploaded before the strike system was released.

While users should have never uploaded assets they didn’t own rights to, it seems very unfair that while users were trying to fix their mistakes, they were kept waiting so long that moderation got to them before the archives ever went through. I really wish Roblox would lift the moderation actions on people who were, in my opinion, unfairly terminated simply because they didn’t have the tools developers will now have to rectify the issue themselves.

I really wish Roblox would give these developers another chance on the platform, regardless of the usual time limit on appeals.

Been waiting years for a feature like this! After being on Roblox for over a decade, there’s at least a few items I’d love to clear away…

This does feel like something which could be abused in the wrong hands. Will refunds be given to people who previously purchased these archived items, and do those refunds come out of the creator’s robux balance?

I had a friend that despite asking to delete some clothing item, he also got his account terminated, and been trying to get it back ever since. Would be nice to see something being done about that.
he also lost everything he had on roblox, including a group of 60k+ members, hopefully they might all receive their accounts back.

his user was @NoahG59

Otherwise, seems like a super cool update–glad that it’s finally here. The old email process was terrible.
