How to fix Weird Skinned Mesh Deformations

Hey Devs! In this Small Tutorial, I’m going to show you how to fix the mesh deform when using Armatures

Ever had this issue? And you exported your mesh with an armature but it’s moving weird
In case the gifs don’t load in on the post

What you have to do is called WEIGHT PAINTING

What is weight painting you ask?

Well weight painting is what the bones affect on the Mesh
As seen above in the 2 Gifs that show the issue you currently having

How do you enable weight painting?

Incase it doesnt load in here is the Link

You select the Armature first and then select the mesh while having the Armature Selected
Then you go to where it says Object Editing and Select Weight Painting

If the Dropdown doesn’t show the Weight Painting Option you maybe have selected it the wrong way

Incase you don’t understand watch the gif

As you can see in the gif your Mesh now turned dark blue and with other colors.

So what do the colors mean?
What colors are there and what do they do?

Dark Blue means The bone doesn’t affect that area of the Mesh at all
Cyan means it affects the mesh by a little bit
Green means it affects the mesh more
Yellow affects it more
Orange affects it strongly
Red is what is affected fully

Note: For those who are color blind I’m very sorry I sadly cannot explain how it would look for you guys

So how do you weight paint?

There are 2 options

The first option is you draw on the Mesh with the weight paint tool

The Second is a bit slower but more effective you use the Vertex Group tool to Weight Paint or rather Assign / Remove the weight you don’t need

but before we do that we should prepare everything before we start

Preparing for Weight paint

If you wanna paint on the Mesh I advise you

Do this first
Find the Fall off for the Brush and select the Blocky Arch. This will make the brush paint on the whole red circle you hover over with. It is not really needed to do this but it makes Weight Painting easier

The second thing you need to know is that you can see the weight paint options
Like the Weight Slider and Size Slider for the Brush to save you the time you can right-click to get the option quickly at your cursor

In case the Gif doesn’t load here are the Links

To select the other bones you need to hold ctrl and then click the bone you want

For those who want to use the Vertex Group option

You need to click the Cube Icon with the smaller Cube in the Icon

The downside of Vertex Group is that you have to select each Vertex aka the small Cubes on the Mesh for the bone you want to affect the area. But It’s mostly helpful to clear the Weight of the bones faster. But to select a new bone you have to disable the Vertex Mode view every time for a different bone.

The Gif only shows how to remove the weight but you can select multiple Vertexes with Ctrl or Shift. I sadly don’t remember which one it was again but it was one of them.

But you can assign the weight with the Selected Vertex

A Small note:
If you still have some areas that are affected by the wrong bone just Rotate the bone with R or Move the bone with G
Once you found the Bone that still affects the wrong area just set your Brush Weight to 0 and draw on that place or use the Vertex

To reset the rotation or location. Press Alt + R to reset the Rotation and Alt + G to reset the Location

To Exit Weight Paint Mode just click the Weight Paint Mode where it normally says Object Mode and switch into Object Mode

This is the whole Tutorial on how to fix the weird Mesh Issue I hope this helps

For the ones that have issue Exporting animations for the Mesh

If you don’t know how to export it right or have issues with how to do so
Select the Mesh and Armature of the Object you animated

To Export the Animation

Then do the following steps in the Image

The Export way can also be done for the Armature and Mesh.

Export it as fbx as well
Disable Bake Animation
Disable Add Leaf Bones
Have Armature and Mesh Selected
Have Selected Objects only Selected in the Export menu

To import the Mesh into Roblox Import it with the Avatar Importer. I don’t know the name fully of the Plugin that Roblox comes already installed in

To Import the Animation open Roblox´s Animator Plugin
Select Import as and then Select Fbx Animation
Select your Exported Fbx Animation and select it
If the mesh moves weird you maybe haven’t disabled what has been shown in the steps in the export.
If it still moves weird scale down the mesh and armature in Blender and reimport the Skinned Mesh once again

I Hope this Helps
