How to make obby genre interesting to play?

Hi guys, i tried to approach this genre with realistic design and storyline but people seems dont like it too much. I dont want to put colorful brick with 1 gigantic model opening their mouth at the background and called it done because there are thousand games like that. I want to create something different but i dont know what or how.

Another question is what game genre easy to create other than obby? I can design pretty well and little bit of scripting knowledge. Sorry if my english bad.

I think the most import aspect of a game is that it has to be unique because im pretty sure people dont want to play unoriginal games

That is my current dilemma right now because i dont even know what is unique anymore

Try and just come up with what you think other people hasn’t done before, mesmerise other people

I think you need to make good thumbnail, so people will be interested; try to make ads; make name with words which people often using in search bar and they will find your game.

I recommend ramping up the obby difficulty as the players progress and start off quite simple as if it’s really difficult at first, the players will likely lose motivation to continue further on.

Isn’t that just a difficulty chart obby? I don’t know if that was some kind of sarcasm…

I don’t think obbies are a great place to expand into right now. It’s too late.

A lot of different obbies have been made, and the reason there are a lot of popular ones is because of how easy and simple they are (not to the developer, but to the player). People enjoy the little trickle of serotonin that occurs when they complete an Obby level, even if it’s extremely easy. They don’t as much care about the plot line, the details, the intricacy… many players just enjoy how easy but “fulfilling” obbies are. In fact, they don’t feel like waiting for a plot line between levels. It feels annoying and like a waste of time to them. They’d rather just have a simple Obby.

And then there are the other type of people that enjoy more complex games with a theme, story, and detail… But they likely don’t want to go with a themed Obby. Why? Because they enjoy bigger challenges, and they demand a detailed storyline. Obbies just don’t have the gameplay potential to carry EXTREMELY detailed stories.

So, you are left with a very small portion of players who would actually enjoy these themed obbies. But keep in mind, it’s a very small demographic. Why? Because the whole attraction of obbies are to feel fulfilled, and people don’t want to have to wait for a story to do this. It bores them.

Now, when it comes to other genres, a generally easy genre is a story game. If you enjoy details and can design, they are easy to make and you can do them quite well… A lot of them have some of that Obby design you are looking for, without attempting to drag it out for a while.

Honestly, If you want to make that specific genre interesting and unique to play I would improve upon the idea and concept of the game if you want to make something fun that you enjoy creating and more it’s quite important to bring something fresh and new to the table. Then expand on the concept and what mechanics and ways to make it different from existing known obby that are out there.

Brainstorm ideas on the overall concepts of the game you want create and something that interest you. It’ll possibly take time to come up with different ideas to make a game unique, have a notebook write ideas down and try implementing different mechanics inside your game.

Pull off fun mechanic and overall ideas figure out what makes your game unique. I’ll consider viewing other obby and try finding and writing down ‘ideas’, and see what you can do to make yours stand out from others.

ramping up means getting harder as you progress

Yes, that’s the whole point of a difficulty chart obby

Level design, that’s it honestly. But not talking about the aesthetic side of level design. Jumping to platforms and climbing stairs aren’t very interesting and gets dull real quick. Except if you are playing on mobile then it’s a challenge. Have alternate movement like dashing, sliding, wall runs, etc. Platformers strives on having multiple alternate movement modes.

Try playing Mirror’s Edge, mainly an obstacle course game. I feel that it’s best if you play it yourself for inspiration.

This answer only focuses mechanically, there are other parts you could make interesting, game mechanics aren’t the only crutch or tool you have.

What about a story game where you fight the enemy’s by doing obbys? It is completely possible to make a game unique and fun.

Any genre can be revived and made better or unique.

Just because it’s an obby game doesn’t mean it has to be like every other obby game.
